Unfortunately last nights dinner at Fig was nothing like it has been over the years - they changed the Mediterranean menu which was outstanding to one that is comprised of items made from locally sourced foods. The result is a new menu that is incongruous, lacking in substance and quality and uneven at best. The food was all coated in oil and salt, which unfortunately you cannot use to hide a lack of flavor. I had convinced my friends to go there bc of the menu and was sorely disappointed. They said we should have gone to Hillstone across the street when we were leaving. ā¹ļø
We had the: Fig wine (good) the bread balloon (average, tasted like naan for $12) that came out coated in oil the sashimi which was decent but for $20 should be more than three bites the stone fruit salad, which lacked the previous menuās big luscious chunks of fruit, feta cheese and mint but instead had paltry amounts of goat cheese and little dressing. Tasted like peaches on dry lettuce sprinkled with goat cheese. the kids pasta which they had to make a tomato sauce for and tasted like tomato paste two vegetables which you think would be healthy but came DRENCHED in oil and to make matters worse on a bed of some type of heavy cream sauce which had no flavor but just turned something nutritious into something unhealthy the halibut which is poached and comes out seeping whitish fluid and looking gross, plus was the smallest serving of fish possible, which for $50 we sent back.
Why did they change the menu?! They said they were trying to move in a Michelin direction but they went into a California Pizza Kitchen direction. It was so gross. Pls pls pls bring back the original menu. We had a terrible meal.
I donāt know if there are chefs fighting for superiority in the kitchen but the menu choices were limited, lacking in harmony and so expensive! Halibut for $46 should have more than a 4 oz portion. There should be some type of free bread offered to nibble on when you have your wine. Salads should be substantial, incorporate herbs into light dressings and able to stand on their own. The kids menu should have more than grilled cheese, mac and cheese and typical kids junk. There should be a margarita cheese pizza on it if so, if not there should be on on the adult menu in addition to the mushroom pizza.
Fish options should add a salmon and at that price point be share-able. Every pasta dish should not have meat or shellfish, which some people are allergic to.
If you are going to locally source things, tell us on the menu where the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis place is beautiful, the staff were so courteous and friendly. The service was excellent. We chose to be seated outside. It was a gorgeous California afternoon. The atmosphere is that of a chill California beach hang out with a little bit of luxury on the side. The wait staff was frinedly and attentive, when seated they ask if you want flat or sparkling water. We started with a cappuccino and an iced vanilla latte. They offer your choice of dairy, including non-dairy options. The coffee was excellent! The flavor was bold and rich but not burnt or overpowering. The menu is a little exotic but still has some familiar dishes. The spirits list is also a bit exotic. Though we did not have any alcohol, it was a good size list to choose from. It was difficult to choose what to eat. It all sounded wonderful, and you want to try everything. We chose the Crab Cake Benedict and the Chilaquiles Verde. The wait for the food was not long at all. The food looked fancy and picture worthy. The flavor of the food is delicious and a little bit different from what you expect. The crab cakes were a little soft, but the crab was fresh with a hint of lemon, which made them so good. The eggs Benedict was perfectly cooked, and the holindase was thick and flavorful. The chilaqules had an amazing Verde salsa on them. We have had this dish many times before in other places and have not tasted a salsa like this before. It was thick and felt homemade. The eggs on the bottom were cooked perfectly. The portions are generous, and we had leftovers, which the wait staff took for us and packed it to go. The straws and the to go box were both eco-friendly. The prices are reasonable for what you get. This place is a fun California beach hang out in a luxurious California beach side hotel. We were here for a convention and will choose this location again so we can come back to eat and hang out. This place...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOne of my favorite happy hour spots in LA. They give 50% off their whole menu 5-6pm (though still about $50/pp+) and their food/drink selection is pretty good. I will say I think this place used to be a LOT better, but still it's pretty good. I would NOT come here for full-priced meal.
What we got this time: FOOD: sizzling saganaki, beef tartare, mussels in a white sauce, dry aged steak medium rare DRINKS: Miramar, lavender bees knees, Fuego de pina ( pineapple mezcal ), and mole old fashioned (chipotle infused)
Would 100% reorder: beef tartare, mussels, sizzling Saganaki saganaki comes with a good show where they light the cheese on fire in front of you. Our waiter burnt some of the plant above us when lighting ours on fire (good thing it's fake?). Comes with right out the oven pita bread, which went so well with the cheese! we love mussels and we loved the Hollander mussels! We thought it had a Thai twist to it
What we'd avoid: steak frites, anything house-infused (lavender bees knees, mole old fashioned) steak frites: we ordered medium rare and it came out overdone, bordering medium well/well done. Flavor was ok but was too over cooked lavenders bees knees tasted like soap mole old fashioned had an aftertaste with an INSANE jalapeƱo aftertaste, practically unbearable (All the drinks we ordered house infused tasted horrendous, which was a first for us, so think the person in charge of infusing must have not known what they...
