My name is Moses I made a reservation for my wife and I with the manager whose name is Nanette I did share how important this date was she seemed to be polite but a little confused over the phone Nevertheless we went Friday which would be yesterday the 30th We showed up 15 minutes before our reservation was at 7:00 to watch the entertainment which would have started at 7:30 our server was Travis I I requested he recommended an appetizer I asked I was looking for something that was big portion He recommended the octopus I accepted his recommendation he said it was enough for two people I will be posting a picture of one arm of the octopus maybe 5 in Long it look like a smashed weiner He served us water gave us bread and then we were on his pay no mind list for about 20 minutes tell a young man by the name of Kenny walk by and offer us more water Kenny was extremely extremely courteous with us the other servers ignored this when we try to get their attention On the other hand Kenny continue to offer water at least Finally we had an opportunity to order two paellas one valenciana I believe it was and the other one wala Diablo When it arrived at the table I asked the guy who brought it which one is this he looks right through me and said it's what you ordered and place the plate on the RUDLY table At this point I had had enough rudeness the guy that was going to do the entertainment came up to my wife and I and forced himself to speak Spanish to us without any need because we both are both perfectly bilingual as a matter of fact I am trilingual I speak French English and Spanish So I walked up to the bar once again Kenny was very polite and apologetic because he noticed and I was very frustrated I asked to speak to the manager and then it came and I proceeded to explain what was going on And I told her that at that point my wife and I will not happy how we were being treated and the only thing She responded AGRESSIVLYstating so you are REFUSING TO PAY!!! And then without carrying that people were listening she said I could call the cops on you guys So that is how the manager Addressed our issue it was the poorest experience at any restaurant I have ever had I am 56 years old and I have been going to restaurants probably since I was 13 The place is beautiful but the service and the treatment was horrible and extremely offensive So I will make it a point to let everyone know how we were treated at tapas Pappas fritas The sad part is that my wife has been waiting to go there for years And I truly think what saddens me the most is that Nanette could have cared about our experience We did not even taste the food IT TRULY WAS A SAD EXPERIENCE!! almost feel like that instead of having us there as guests it felt like the employees felt we should have been working in the kitchen and did not have the right to be here as a customer That is the feeling I got since we showed up And I have never experienced this before.. I cannot get over how belittled and Embarrassed we felt being told by Nanette that she could call the police on us for refusing to pay when that was not the case And their where other customers looking at us and listening Nanette is so unprofessional I am sorry I even have to share this horrible...
Read moreVisited Tapas Papa Fritas again last night. We picked a bad night. Art Show on the Waterfront created chaos. We arrived in the area 15 minutes before our 7pm reservation. All roads to the area were backed up with cars and had to park 5 blocks away. We were 20 minutes late but seated on the patio as we requested. The staff were attentive but overwhelmed with the mass of people. Our table was near the entrance so we saw dozens of patrons turned away because the restaurant was too busy. Seated immediately, we waited 10 minutes before we were acknowledged. When we finally saw a waiter, he rushed through the litany of the tasting menu. Last time we had that special. Priced well, there was too much food and we were too full to properly enjoy the Valencia Paella entre. Since rice isn’t my wife’s favourite, we decided to just have tapas, which is her idea of a great meal. We had researched the menu and gave our waiter our list. We asked for the dishes to come out gradually but everything came out at once, followed by warm rolls with aioli. The only thing warm was the bread. The aioli was tasty but thin. The Gambas Al AJillo supposedly gulf shrimp in a garlic and wine sauce was four small shrimp in an inch of watery soup. The Costilla de Cerdo supposedly pork ribs with a a spicy resin honey rub was sort of two pork side ribs slow cooked to overdone without much of a taste. The Chuletilla de Cordero for $20 was two overdone half in thick lamb chops. Barely more than a bite each. Tasty though. The Patatas Brava supposedly spicy red potato wedges were half inch cubes of deep fried spuds with a mildly spicy red sauce and a tiny dollop of what I hope was white cheese thrown on top. Some of the potatoes were soggy, some crispy. Ensalada de Tomates was a plate full of sliced tomatoes topped with basil leaves, some chopped feta and a very good sweet balsamic. The best part of the meal. We decided on their special desert that night. Flambéed plantains with vanilla and pistachio ice cream. Coffees came out 10 minutes after we ordered them. We asked twice for the desert which wasn’t forthcoming. They advised us that flambées take some time. When it finally came out the ice cream was half melted. It looked like it had been sitting for a while. The plantains were very cold. We had our first Peche Flambe in Majorca fifty years ago, so the Spaniards know how to make a good desert. I make that and Bananas Foster all the time so I know that timing is critical. These guys were way too busy to create a proper dish. Our mistake. In future I would order the salad and a paella. I would also check for special events and...
Read moreNice atmosphere but disappointing food and service. We celebrated my Cousin's birthday with family and friends at Tapas Papa Frita on Saturday, 10/19/2019. This was our first time at this restaurant. Our first impression was good. The decor was nice and the location was excellent. Initially, our group of eight was told that we would be seated near the door but when I asked to me seated near the window, they happily agreed. This was a much nicer table and the upholstered high back chairs were very nice. The live music flamenco dancing was also a nice surprise. For dinner, we ordered three different types of Paella. One traditional, one with black rice (Arros Negre) and one with pasta (Fideua). The traditional Paella tasted burned and a number of our guests commented on it. We didn't send it back but in retrospect we should have. The Arros Negre was also overcooked (almost mushy rice). The Fideua was okay. Considering this is an upscale Spanish restaurant, Paella should be a signature dish. Disappointing. My kids (ages 9 & 11) had the chicken (Pollo a la alcaparras) and mac & cheese and they said it was good. For dessert, they gave my Cousin a Churro with a sparkler on it and we ordered Flan, creme brulee, and chocolate hazelnut cheesecake. The flan and creme brulee were both nice. The Flan was lighter and not as sweet as most places and this was a nice change. The Cheesecake was very dense and although the chocolate was nice, it drowned out the hazelnut flavour. As for service, we had two people tending our table. Our waiter and someone who only occasionally filled our water glasses. Our waiter (Arturo) completely neglected us. On more than one occasion, we needed to seek him out to ask for things including to get a status on our food and for a dessert menu. The water guy was also not very attentive. Five of the people in our group are fluent in both Spanish and English so language is not an excuse. Considering how much we were spending, I would have thought this would buy us excellent service - it didn't. In total, our bill came to $552.10 plus a 20% "Automatic Gratuity" of an additional $100.20, totaling $652.30. Not a cheap night out. So what are my closing thoughts... I enjoyed having a nice night out with family and friends. I enjoyed the experience of the live flamenco dancing. Would I do it again - Sadly, probably not. There are so many good restaurants in town that I can't see myself spending that much gain, for bad service and overcooked food. Sorry...
