The first time I went, I was instantly taken aback by the atmosphere. Dark, dank, smelly. Like wet dogs. Near the counter, you might smell wet dogs with coffee and muffins. They were nice as I ordered, but when I sat at the counter facing Pratt Park, I turned and saw that a man with a white power cross and swastikas on his jean jacket was sitting at their middle table, in plain view, chatting and chillin' with his friend. As a Black person in the CD, it was a jarring but apt metaphor: the literal and figurative provision of safe spaces for the worst of whiteness by corporate entities, while Black displacement and discomfort barely register. Meh, dramatic. But I never forgot how comfortable he was in Seattle's historically-Black Central District, knowing no one (least of all my breath-addicted Black ass) would confront him. Still, I went again, (vegans, they sell Mighty O donuts, yo), and discovered the overwhelming dog smell mixed with their oppressive heat wasn't just a bad day, it's... them.
It's highly rated because it's a place where people who smell like the dogs they tongue kiss while smugly replacing Black people with Black Lives Matter signs can congregate comfortably, with almost no Black people in sight. They provide that, and my neighbors love them for it. Personally, I have never hated 4 walls more. I live a block away, so if you're there, and a Black woman passes by with a snarl and middle finger, tis I. It isn't personal. Just as your comfort with accepting the unearned fruits of white supremacy isn't personally about me. The middle finger and denying you my smile is the literal least I can do, yo....
Read moreBroadcast was the coffee shop that finally ended my month-and-a-half-long coffee quest in Seattle. Yeah, I know, it may sound absurd that it took me so long to find my way to a caffeine haven in this bustling city. But hey, I’m not your typical coffee enthusiast. So, when I stepped foot into Broadcast, it was a moment of triumph mixed with anticipation. And boy, did it live up to the wait!
As the clock struck 9 in the morning, I found myself greeted by a serene atmosphere. Soft indie melodies played in the background, creating a gentle backdrop to this coffee oasis. Surprisingly, the place wasn’t bustling with crowds, giving me the luxury of enjoying some peace and quiet. With a iced chai latte in one hand and a slice of their delightful lemon lavender cake in the other, I relished the affordable treats. While both items hit the mark, the tantalizing array of other options made me eager to return and explore further.
But what truly sets Broadcast apart, and is deserving of my sincere five-star rating, is the remarkable staff. Warm, friendly, and highly adaptable, they embody the essence of exceptional service. As a blind individual, I encountered a minor hurdle with their Wi-Fi system, which had an unorthodox setup. Despite the network being open, an access code in print was required. Thankfully, one of the baristas named Luna came to my rescue, helping me navigate the situation with grace. Thanks to their assistance, I was able to connect and make the most of a beautiful day.
Here’s to an overall good experience that guarantees my return to this...
Read moreHas cold brew coffee. However, services are mostly friendly and nice for regulars who come there often. I was in town visiting friends who are living around the area. I stopped by to get a cold brew coffee on 7/24/18 around 6:38 a.m. or so . As I was paying for my roasted Turkey sandwich, a bagel and coffee, I forgot to mention no ice for my cold brew when I ordered, when I saw the lady pouring coffee in the cup, I was the only customer there in line and no one was waiting in line behind me, I immediately said: " I'm sorry. I forgot to say no ice please."
Good grief. She turned around, stared piercing right into my eyes, froze with a pitcher in one hand and a half cup filled with cold brew coffee in the other hand, her face and jaws clinched, turned kinda mildly red orange, swiftly and angrily turned around headed into the back and pour out the coffee, turned back pour in cold brew coffee without ice, put it on the counter. I said: Thank you. She turned and walked away to the right, and did not say a word or even a smile.
WOW. This is July 2018. If Seattle is in a winter cold month, July 2018 heat waves would be happening with this kind of service. I'd would endure suffering caffeine withdraw symptoms than to get a cup of coffee from this place.
It happened on 7/24/18. I edited to have the correct date after looking at my email receipt. Adding that the total of my...
