I read the reviews and laughed. I am a repeat customer, I am African American, I know the food and preparation of what Whites refer to as soul food. And that is alright. It is the best food in of any kind in Seattle. And yes, you have to wait a very long time. Why, because in the culture of African Americans, patience is a virtue and at the end you are rewarded Thus Simply Soul. Take a book, go before you are so hungry you can eat a bear. As to portions and price rent in Seattle is about the highest in the country cost of chicken wings quadrupled in three years cost of all food is up as is gas at $5. Across the country. Most who can still afford to eat out or order in make the kind of money that can afford a $20 meal that will send you to heaven.I know good cooking and Seattle is pretty much lacking in taste buds, most restaurant food is very bad. I always have to take a diuretic after earring at a restaurant. Not so Simply Soul because they know salt is not a seasoning Black folk and salt do not go well together and this is food is what Black folk cook when you come over on a Sunday. ,Her chicken is fried perfectly, not like the fried chicken others stolen recipes. Black eye peas, perfect, collards, yes, candied yams you can still taste the yams beyond the perfect sweetness and Mac and cheese- !!!!!!!! So begin two hours ahead, call in your order. Go sit and play on your phone and wait. This is what you will know as adventure, I have done it many times. Black folk do not take there out of town guest from back east and south to any restaurant that claims soul food except to Simply Soul, my Memphis guest gave it a thumbs up and I am taking my St. Louis 220 lb guy there next week. With small servings this is going to cost to buy double order, but worth it. Unlike some reviewers, I am used to Seattle prices. the plane fare here doubled also. Also having lived here when a house cost $90,000 I am rolling in assets the house is now worth $900,000. So top all of the goodness off with one of the baked goods. So wonderful; Simply Soul. I do not know the name of the owner, keep forgetting so this review is not...
Read moreSimply Soulful felt like getting a hug from Harlem! Upon entering the establishment, I could smell the food right away! Simply Soulful’s full menu is available all day. You have to order at the front before sitting down which was kind of annoying especially when there are other people waiting too. Merchant charge when paying with card! To avoid this, bring cash!
I ordered the “simply breakfast” which is priced at $15. This included eggs in your style of choice, protein of your choice, side of your choice & a biscuit! I got scrambled eggs, chicken sausage & homefries. The eggs had no flavor at all, I had to add salt & pepper. The sausage was delicious & full of flavor however I wish it was cooked/ grilled longer to give it a nice crispy crust. The homefries were good.
Next meal was the catfish & wings combo for $21. This meal came with 2 sides of your choice & cornbread! The sides I got was collard greens & mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was delicious but kind of dry. The collard greens were bitter and needed some seasoning. The waiter/ host said it was cooked with turkey and I didn’t get any of that flavor at all. THE CHICKEN & CATFISH WAS THE STAR OF THE SHOW! A 10/10! THIS RESTAURANT COULD SELL THOSE 2 THINGS ALONE & I’D WAIT IN LINE FOR HOURS JUST TO BUY THEM! BOTH WERE FULL OF FLAVOR! PERFECTLY SEASONED! FRIED TO PERFECTION! JUICY & CRISPY! I’M NOT SURE WHAT THE HECK THEY PUT IN THEM BUT I KNOW FOR SURE, I WILL BE BACK!
The Chicken was soo good, we purchased an order to go!
Not pictured Sweet Tea & Lemonade! Soo refreshing and yummy! It was perfect for pairing with the soul food!
Waiter/Host was very nice, however, he never followed up to see if I needed anything while dining in. I found myself getting up constantly to speak with him. He did however accommodate me very well at each...
Read moreI tell you what, the restaurant lives up to it's name. The space is quaint, (simple), the food is soulful. A taste of the South, in the Northwest. I called to place an order and the young woman that answered the phone was very curt/short borderline rude. I almost chose NOT to pick up the order. When we arrived at the restaurant, there was a young woman outside speaking into her phone loudly. She was complaining that someone (I gather the woman inside that was preparing Mac and Cheese) was correcting her, and I understand why. Her customer service skills were non existent. I digress. I'm glad I continued and picked up the order. There was another young woman inside that rung us up, very good customer service. We ordered the oxtails with rice and a cornbread muffin, we chose the collard greens (tender and seasoned just right) as the side. Sunday dinner is not complete, at least to me, without mac and cheese and black eyed peas (delicious and cooked to perfection). I haven't had greens, oxtails, cornbread, black eyed peas and macaroni and cheese that well done in a while. It made me miss my grandmother and mother. I have perfected their recipes (I cook well), there are just times when I prefer to sample others recipes. I've been to a few other places that claim to do oxtails and greens well, they just didn't quite make the grade...for me. Simply Soulful, in my book, is the top for my favorite, comfort food, rainy Sunday meal. We will definitely return, possibly we will dine in. I hope the young lady will have a better attitude next time, she is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. Imma eat,...
