Coche Valley is a cute cafe on Capital Hill, cozy vibes near a bunch of great restaurants and open decently late so you can go before/after your restaurant reservations. There is a super big table on one side of the cafe which I assume is reserved for group events, but also there isn't any barrier between it and the other tables so I can see it getting loud if you are unlucky and come on a day when one of those things are going on.
We got the rainbow shaved ice which seemed like the 'signature' of the cafe. It's different from bingsu and the cafe has a bingsu category in its own. I think you get quite a bit of shaved ice and the different colors are actually all different (artificial) flavors, like red is strawberry, yellow is banana etc., which was a pleasant surprise. It also comes with condensed milk which was genius, it really smooths out the texture and makes it creamy. I don't think it was amazing to the point I would crave it all the time, but it fits the cute vibe and I do appreciate those small details on it as mentioned.
Also got the strawberry crepe and strawberry drinks which also weren't mindblowingly amazing, but also nothing was particularly bad about them. So if you are in the area and you are in the mood for a cute cafe I'd definitely check...
Read moreI will be back. Probably multiple times. With multiple friends. We made a plan to come here after one of us had tried the strawberry cloud soufflé. He used the term Hoover to explain how quickly he had inhaled his pancakes. Less than three minutes he said. Having been here now, I completely believe it.
My decision was to order both the eggs Benedict with bacon soufflé pancakes and the strawberry cloud pancakes. I honestly thought I was gonna be able to save part of that and take it home to Family. I was mistaken. It was amazing how late and delicious the pancakes were and the poached egg and sauce together with the crispy bacon was a combination of fluffy, comforting, savory, crispy, salty... my tab was about $40 for the two. Then I had an iced Matcha. Six dollars. Ivy made an amazing Matcha for me. It was beautiful and delicious.
One recommendation: Bring a friend so that you'll have someone to look at when your eyes open wide and you smile and you make all kinds of happy sounds. And don't be afraid to declare how delicious things are out loud. Everyone in the restaurant does it. It's Capitol Hill St. parking so make sure you plan for a little bit of driving around. It's about $4.50 in the meter an hour since the rates...
Read moreCoche Valley is a cute new addition to the area. It has some growing pains that are typical of a new business, which is understandable. I'm also not a fan of the card-only model and auto tipping suggestions, but the owner is incredibly kind and friendly, which balanced that out.
The food is mostly comprised of simple ingredients, but they're effective and well presented. I got the banana nutella shibuya toast, a cocoa latte, and the red bean oreo crepe. The latte was a bit disappointing - no actual coffee in it! - but the toast was excellent and the crepe was light and pleasingly mild. Looking forward to trying the bing su in a future visit.
Overall, a good dessert place that will probably only get...
