I had high expectations for this place due to word of mouth from friends and coworkers. Unfortunately, it did not live up to its praise.
I had ordered the Tokyo curry and the calamari. The flavour of the curry was decent, but it did lack some depth to the curry. Most of the flavour felt surface level, very similar to certain curry blocks you can get at the market. The beef did not feel like the main character, rather it was very much in the background. It was there, but moreso in spirit. Overall, I would say the curry was a solid 3.5/5.
Now the calamari was, for lack of a better word, disappointing. The only thing it had going for it was the crunch. Hurry Curry certainly nailed that aspect. Would give it 5/5 for crunchiness alone. However, the taste was 1/5. Did they not season the batter? Was it purely just some egg wash and panko? I could find more flavour in a La Croix than in the calamari. I suspect that's why the dipping sauces are so flavourful. It's to mask the fact that the calamari has no flavour of its own. And the texture of the calamari itself was closer to rubber, feeling as if it was overcooked. What was more shocking was that one of the pieces contained a thin plastic string. I guess it might have fallen into the batter somehow, but that speaks on the cleanliness and attentiveness of the place. This calamari can only get a 1/5 for me.
Would I eat here again? Well, if I was craving just curry, probably. But I find that I would have to be somewhat desperate as the flavour isn't anything to write home about.
Overall, I would not recommend this place. Maybe the other offerings would have more merit. But the fact that it's curry felt lackluster was enough for me to not...
Read moreTried this place for a dinner date with my partner on a Friday evening. Was surprisingly empty, with only two other patrons in the restaurant when we arrived around 5:30p. Seating was generous and there was simple but nice Japanese style decor. What struck me right away was how the layout of the seating was modeled as more of a "sitdown" restaurant, but the ordering was very fast-food-y. We got menus from the front counter and they told us to look at what we want and to come back and order at the counter. Nothing to complain about, definitely interesting.
The food came out in about 5-8 mins, which is very fast considering the amount of food we ordered. About $60 dollars worth of food: Tonkotsu Curry with pork cutlet, Japanese style curry with karaage chicken, Croquette, cheesy curry fries, and mango pudding. Not a bad price. The food was solid, nothing "out of this world" though. The meat was a little unseasoned, but the consistency of the breading was great. The curry was also good and had a nice creamy texture and savory taste. The appetizers were good as well. The only negative thing would be that they brought ALL of our food out at once. I was hoping to receive appetizers first, then the entree. Just a small thing though.
The service was excellent, workers are nice, amicable, and helpful.
I think Hurry Curry is an EXCELLENT lunch place if you want a quick indulgence of Japanese style curry. I do think though that it has an identity conflict of having a "sitdown" style vibe in the main seating area, but an otherwise fastfood style of ordering and service. Drinks, napkins, cutlery were all self-serve. For a dinner with Japanese curry though, I would recommend Kobuta and Ookami...
Read moreI got the Chicken Katsu from this place, which seemed to be their most popular item This came with breaded slices of chicken breast, served over a bed of rice. Since I got takeout, it came with a side of curry, along with a side salad
The chicken was decent. It had a good color to its breading, and was a little bit crunchy at parts, but I thought the breading came off a little too easily The actual meat itself was on the drier side, but not objectionably so. It was fine enough to consume without being too put off by What actually did impress me was the amount of chicken provided - there was a lot
I did like the curry sauce - while not spicy, it had a ton of spices to it, and was quite flavorful. It had a nutty taste and aroma that was pretty solid The rice was on the drier side though, I thought it could've been cooked with more water. I also realized it would've been a better experience if I'd removed the chicken, poured the sauce over the rice, mixed everything together, and put the chicken back on and eaten it that way - because pouring the sauce over the chicken meant a lot of the rice at the bottom was just plain
Like I mentioned, the portion size here was actually very good - there was a lot of rice, chicken, and curry. It's relatively expensive for a lunch - about $19, so I'm not sure if its fully worth it, but the size helps make up for that a bit
Overall, it's a decent enough chicken katsu. the curry especially is good, but the meat could've been...
