I've been here well over a hundred times (I'd guess no fewer than 300 times), and I still love this place.
PRICES:
The prices are always good. The more expensive items, at six or seven dollars, are too much money for me to be spending at a 24-hour place, but you can get the best bean and cheese burrito for $3.01, or taquitos for a hair over three dollars. Generally, the prices (for portion size) are better than Taco Star or Taco Express.
FOOD QUALITY/QUANTITY:
The food here is just what I hope for when I stop into a Mexican 24-hour joint. It's often greasy, probably cooked in lard. Serving sizes are always good. The taquitos are bigger than at any rival locations. The sauces are my favorite of the Mexican fast food restaurants'. The beans, carne and condiments are great here. Also good quality Horchata, Tamarindo and Jamaica (at least good mixes) The chicken is often from bad cuts sadly. I'm not too fond of the shrimp either.
LOCATION/SERVICES:
The building is easily accessible from either direction of traffic on Austin Bluffs. It's close enough to the high school (Doherty) to allow walking for lunch (and because of this, I suggest avoiding weekday lunches here; it's crowded). The building is dirty. The tables are messed up mostly; I think they are leftover from an ex- Del Taco on Powers, but I'm not certain. The bathrooms are nasty, and sometimes groups of people spend a long time in them. If it weren't for the decent neighborhoods nearby, it would feel a hair sketchy, which I like.
CUSTOMER BASE:
-Weekday lunches are packed full of high school kids. -Late weekend nights (after 2:00 am) are full of drunk people, but you still get your food fast. -Otherwise, the customers are pretty easy to get along with.
STAFF:
This is pretty mixed. Sometimes the service is horrible (the worker wouldn't give me hotsauce because he mistakenly thought he had done so already), and sometimes the service is great (Two late night workers, a short man and a young woman named Ariana, always give me excellent service. Sometimes Ariana remembers quirks I have, like less ice, extra hot sauce, etc. without being reminded). Generally, if you go in drunk, expect to feel less welcome than if you go in sober, and the same with your manners. Spanish is appreciated, but all the workers speak at least...
Read moreMy husband went to this restaurant to fetch me some Carne Asada fries and came home with absolute chaos. He WANTED SIX ROLLED TACOS, and they told him he couldn't add a certain amount to my combo, so he asked what he could get that he'd end up with six rolled tacos. Not only did he come home with only THREE rolled tacos he had a whole meal he didn't ask for. The order taker didn't repeat the order back to him, so he trusted (since I send him here, OFTEN, for the fries) that they understood him. He comes home, my Carne asada fries had no pico de Gallo on them as requested, there is a lot of grizzle, and I can hardly eat it. Plus, the "California burrito" was the ONLY item that wasn't a total disaster, and we have some sort of mess going on in a clam shell. (Attached pic). Now, normally I'd call the store, talk to someone, and make it right. The guy who answered the phone decided to ARGUE with me instead of offering to fix it. That's why the ONE star. While the food is tasty, the pricing is getting our of hand, especially when ingredients are missing that were paid for. It would've only cost them WHAT WE PAID FOR, to make it right. Pico and 3 rolled tacos... This guy doesn't care to fix anything, so until the crew gives a darn about getting orders correct, we won't be back. Off to eat my fries meat, cheese, and sour cream now. Do better, guys. I sent him there a LOT, so finding another Mexican restaurant is on...
Read moreI want to give this place a 3.5 stars but the quantity won me over. I haven't ever heard of this place except driving by this one store so I don't know if there are others or not. I believe they cater more to drive up customers as parking in miserable and they always seem to have cars in line which is why I decided to try it out, a place with a constant flow of customers is usually a good sign. We went in and there is a huge board on their wall with pictures of all of the food items which is good but it is also deceiving as the portions were bigger than those in the pictures. Their sauces are plentiful but very liquidy so when you put it on your burrito or taco it runs down your hands and wrists to your elbow and you are looking for something to clean up with and the napkins are lacking we needed a beach towel or something (yes I am exaggerating a bit). The food wasn't what I expected but it wasn't horrible either. I guess I am used to beef and bean burritos which is what I was crashing but this was much more like a fajita with peppers onions cut up steak etc. As I said more than expected. I am just not a huge fan of that kind of burritos (I never order fajitas). I do recommend this place just don't expect Taco Bell or Taco John's. They have much...
