Celiacs and sensitives beware
My most recent visit to Cho was extremely disappointing. When I got my food, I noticed that the amount of fish in my maki compared to rice, had gone down severely since the last time that I had eaten there, there is almost no salmon at all, the roll was mostly rice. I also noticed that my gluten-free soy sauce was brought to me and a low sodium container marked GF when in prior visits , it had been brought to me in a separate cup.
I was unable to finish my food as I got very full very fast, and I assumed it was because of the unusual amount of rice in the rolls. By the time I got home, I was very tired, and my mouth had several sores. I realized that I had been exposed to Gluten.
I spent the next two days with a migraine and extreme brain fog sleeping most of the time. When I finally had the energy to call the restaurant and let them know that I believe that their “Gluten-free” soy sauce Was cross contaminated I was met with extreme aggression. The person on the phone just kept telling me over and over again that I needed to go to the hospital. I needed to go to a doctor. If I didn’t come to them with a doctors note they couldn’t do anything for me, No one has ever gotten sick from there before they have never had an issue with allergies and if I wanted to claim one I needed to come and show them paperwork from a medical professional as that is their policy. I explained to them that I wasn’t seeking any type of compensation. I just wanted to make sure that nobody else got sick.
This has been something that I thought in the past they cared about as I never got sick at this restaurant before and I wanted to let them know so nobody else got sick. I wanted to give them the opportunity to wash out the containers and, make sure that regular soy sauce did not end up in these containers that are obviously refilled and reused. The person on the phone did not seem to want to hear that at all, they just kept repeating that no one had ever gotten sick and it’s their policy that if you do get sick, you need to provide a doctors note. I did find it very interesting that they have such a strict policy, considering “no one has ever gotten sick”.
After seven minutes of getting nowhere with the person who answered the phone I gave them my phone number and asked them to have a manager call me when there was actually a manager on duty.
A manager did call me back promptly, and he actually apologized for the fact that I was unwell and asked me if I was feeling better, which I’m not, it will take me two weeks to get better from this exposure.
He did confirm that they do refill bottles at the end of the night, and there could have been a cross contamination and say they would look into it. He also confirmed that it is the owners policy that they don’t do anything for anyone who experiences any type of reaction unless they come with a doctors note or a hospital note.
He also asked me about everything everything that was ordered at my table Which I thought might’ve been to look up my ticket, but it was actually to make sure that I knew how to order for my sensitives and remind me not to eat the ramen as it uses wheat noodles.
Up until now I have been happy to visit this restaurant regularly but I will no longer Be patronizing this establishment as I can no longer believe that my health and well-being is a...
Read moreI had a hankering for some noodles and didn't want to go home and break out a brick of packaged ramen, so I thought I'd give this place a try. The space is small, with seating for about 40 people. Nevertheless, it is inviting in a sort of dark grey, with apropos Asian decor sort of way.
But enough about that. When I walked in, I was greeted in a very friendly manner and was asked if I was here to dine-in or take-out. I chose to dine in, and was guided to a booth near the window. After a few minutes, my server arrived with a glass I water and presented the menu. I went straight for the ramen section. I wanted spicy, 'cause that's how I roll, and quickly picked out the Spicy Minced Pork Ramen, which was also featured in the lunch specials, so that saved me a couple of bucks, which I quickly used adding some gyoza to my order.
My gyoza was delivered in about five minutes, with the ramen coming soon after. The gyoza was fried, a little oily, but not heavily so, and was fresh and crispy, with a perfect sauce for dipping. The ramen was very good, with the bone broth being the star of the show, which I could taste through the heat of the spice. The noodles were uniform, so they were probably packaged, but of good quality, substantial and firm. This combined with the egg, the Minced Pork, and the other accoutrements made for a fine ramen experience, which I will certainly go for again, but I will ask for extra spice next time.
The staff is very friendly, and I noted a gentleman, who might have been the manager or the owner speaking with a table of customers in a warm and outgoing manner.
If you want a good lunch, and something different from the usual fare, do yourself a favor and grab a bowl of ramen at...
Read moreTonkotsu ramen the main goal i have for the day when I know I'm comming to cho sushi. The night before I go I dream of it. The food is amazing. The tonkotsu ramen is simply one of my favorite things in illinois. Rich and flavorful leaving a hint of collagen on the lips after each bite it has the perfect blend of spices and complimentary ingredients such as seasons roasted pork belly various fungi pickled bamboo etc the pork melts in your mouth and you get a large portion of meat with your soup.If you would like it spicy they will bring you a bowl of chilli oil to add as you please. The noodles are perfectly cooked slightly bouncy and soak up the broth well. The have very good gyoza aswell. A fried dumpling filled with pork or chicken with a medley of vegetables mixed in. It comes with a dipping sauce and is a great appetizer i can recommend. My fiancee has tried all the teas and as a result i have tried a sip of each. They are very refreshing to me and each is made with fresh ingredient. I am not a huge sushi fan and as such am quite picky about the sushi I do eat but there are several rolls I truly enjoy there that compliment the ramen . The spider roll (which is not spider) is a crab roll that is delicious decadent and portioned well. The unagi roll is my favorite which I order every time I go there is BBQ eel that has a mellow and familiar flavor balanced for american palates. The staff are wonderful, kind people who make great food. They remember your orders and preferred seating and you quickly feel like a regular conversing freindily with the waitresses. Highly recommend...
