I visited the establishment with a colleague from work on a Wednesday around noon. There was no crowd and the restaurant was very clean and welcoming albeit generic in decor.
We were greeted instantly by the pleasant young woman at the register taking orders. The menu was directly overhead and difficult to see clearly without stepping back. We ordered our meals and were given a number for our order and a cup for our drinks. What was immediately off putting was upon payment I was prompted to add a tip. I have no problem tipping for services provided by a server but all that was done so far was our order taken. We had to seat ourselves, procure our our own drink, silverware, napkins, etc.. I tipped 20% regardless giving the benefit of the doubt thinking there may be something I am yet to see in the way of traditional service.
After a few minutes our food was brought to the table. So far so good: quick turn around time from order to table. The portion was tiny. I had the Buffalo shrimp basket with fries. The shrimp was well cooked and tasty, the fries crisp and seasoned well. The quality of the food was about the same as you would get at any other local seafood place. Sadly the value is what was severely lacking as a "basket" of 8 medium shrimp, 3 "OG Hushpuppies (which we small, bland, tasteless fried doughballs) and the equivalent of a McDonalds small portion of fries amounted to $20. That amount of money would purchase almost 3 times the food at at least 2 other local places with equal or better quality. What i did find odd was 3 seperate people came to our table at different times in the 20 or so minutes we were there to ask how we liked the food. Not the service I was looking for the pre-paid 20% tip.
As good as the seafood was I'll be skipping Hushpuppies in the future as the value is...
Read moreI couldn't wait to try out Hushpuppies and the restaurant did NOT disappoint. The only thing that I found odd, though, is that they serve alcohol but don't offer table service.
The fried oysters were melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and we also enjoyed both the hushpuppies and croquettes. I ordered the shrimp and grits samples as my entree, and thought both versions were good. The hot honey is spicy, which should go without saying, but isn't always the case. I enjoyed the heat and thought it was really good. The other dish had blue cheese and wasn't as creamy as I like for shrimp and grits- but still good!
We were a party of five and all ordered different menu items. No one walked away hungry or unsatisfied. Our only complaint was that we had to order alcoholic drinks at the counter every time. Not a major issue, but having to stop eating dinner to go buy another glass of wine was not enjoyable... especially since it's suggested to tip every time I order. We got there earlier than friends, so ordered drinks and an appetizer, which included one glass of wine and a fountain soda (tip 1). Friends arrived, so we ordered at the counter again for dinner (tip 2). I finished my wine and hubby wanted to order a beer this time so back to counter for drinks (tip 3).
Again, not a deal breaker by any means since the food was great and the staff were all very friendly. The caliber of food and alcohol on the menu just made me think table service would be a good fit for this restaurant. Dinner for two that night consisted of wine (2),one beer, one fountain drink, an appetizer and two entrees ... grand total (with tips and tax) was close to $80.
Will definitely...
Read moreMe and my S/O visitied huspuppies on 3/29 when they first opened. We've been wanting to try out this seafood restaurant in hopes that we might find a new local seafood joint other than loco fish camp.
The reason I gave this 3 stars is because it was not bad in twrms of service and atmosphere. The customer service was impeccable and owner was always around tending to customers.
My only issue is. It seemed as though it was more like an upscale captain D's than a homey seafood resturant. We paid 93.00 in total
First of all, our portions were VERY small compared to loco fish camp. I ordered the Granny Shark and S/0 ordered the Daddy shark platter. I only got one piece of mahi, 4 medium shrimp and four large scallops, only two hushpuppies and and what looked like a dip cup of coleslaw for 35.00. Now I've been to plenty other seafood restaurants before and when you order a platter you GET A PLATTER not a miniscule entree.
My S/0 got the Daddy shark which was two piece of fish, couple pieces of hushpuppies, shrimp, and fried oysters. Comparably small to mine.
I got the loaded seafood fries as an appetizer and I'm glad I did because I would've left this place hungry. They should offer better portion sizes for how much we are paying. We wanted to try this and got an experience we won't forget, we will be staying at out loco fish camp for the time being and enjoy our...
