Our recent experience at Barrio in South Haven, Michigan, was deeply disappointing. This Mexican restaurant fell far short of expectations, delivering subpar food and an overall frustrating experience.

The tacos, which Barrio touts as a specialty, were a letdown. Odd menu items like “cola tacos” sounded intriguing but were poorly executed, overwhelmed by excessive salt that made them nearly inedible. The shredded cheese seemed artificial, with a strange texture that suggested low-quality ingredients. The salsa was thick and glue-like, while the cheese dip had an unnatural, silicone-like consistency. Every dish felt like it was made with cheap, mass-produced ingredients, lacking the freshness and authenticity one expects from Mexican cuisine.

The restaurant’s location has a history of failed businesses, and Barrio seems to continue this trend. The menu lacked creativity, with flavors that felt uninspired. Compared to Taco Bell, which at least offers consistency and affordability, Barrio’s food was overpriced and underwhelming. For a party of four, our bill came to $90, a steep price for such a lackluster meal. Other Mexican restaurants in South Haven offer far better quality and authenticity for a similar or lower cost.

In short, Barrio was a major disappointment. The food was terrible, the prices were unjustifiable, and the overall experience was forgettable. I strongly recommend skipping Barrio and opting for other local Mexican restaurants or even a quick trip to a fast-food chain.

Very clean venue with nice option for outdoor dining. However, as the summer traffic increases, I can’t imagine how this restaurant will be able to adequately service its guests. Our group of eight arrived early in the evening (5:45) and our dining experience still took over 2 hours. Our server was very pleasant but was too busy to refill waters and to nudge the bar. Forty-five minutes after placing our drink order, my drink (a simple plain frozen margarita) was nowhere in sight although my companions had finished half of their cocktails. We were told that the bar was “backed up.” At that point, I canceled the order. As a former server, I definitely would have offered to comp a drink. When the food finally arrived (the kitchen was also “backed up”), a couple orders were wrong, including mine. No sauce on either taco and my steak taco had lettuce (yuck) on it rather than cilantro. I did not send the food back because I did not want to delay our meal any longer. After making a request, our server did bring sauces on the side. The food was tasty although the nominal upcharge for only three pieces of shrimp on one taco seems a bit much. Perhaps sticking to the restaurant’s standard entree suggestions and not “build-your-own” is...

First time here the food has great flavor! Chips and salsa is the best I’ve had in a long time! The ordering process was a process to say the least. You have to write your own order on a paper menu. Your food comes out the portions are a little undersized unless it’s white rice you get plenty of that. When your food comes out it’s either on a paper plate or in a basket which is okay however they give you a spork. My husband order the potatoes (like American patatoes and never received a “spork”. I asked for one through the server/bartender he was too busy and never brought it then approached the manager and asked for one. Another 7 mins goes by still no spork! He ate them with his finger. They had the bartender the only person serving their entire bar rail and dining room. He never had time for his tables. I will be back to have chips and salsa and a beer or margarita but the cost of the food did not match what we got, would have been better just to add real dishes or not make us do everything ourselves to...
