I want to preface this by saying that I am a pretty patient person and give people the benefit of the doubt 99.9% of the time. It takes a lot for me to speak up in bad service situations, and having worked in restaurant service myself, I pretty much never say anything about anything at restaurants. It's all very forgivable first world problems to me -- especially after what restaurants have been through with covid. That being said:
We arrived at Su Casa and placed our name on the waitlist and preceded to wait 50 minutes for a table. I had my mom who is currently recovering from recent knee replacement and my two young children with me. When it came time for us to be seated, we went to the hostess stand as quickly as possible (we were waiting about 30 feet away and got there in literally 10 seconds), by the time we arrived, the hostess had already given our table to another party. We don't know what happened, but short of warping to the hostess stand, there was nothing we could do to approach any faster. When we found out our table had been given away, and the hostess not offering any type of reasonable solution, we asked to speak to the manager. After calmly explaining that the hostess did not wait for our party who had a member in it with a clear disability -- she had a cane -- and two smaller kids, this guy couldn't have cared less and couldn't have been more rude. When I brought up the fact that my mother had an issue with walking due to recent surgery and that it seemed to me they don't treat customers with disabilities properly, he didn't deny it, but simply doubled down and essentially said, "right, that's just the way we do things here. We call your name and if you're not here (WE WERE THERE AND HAD NEVER LEFT!) we go to the next person. Are you eating here or not?" When i said, "uh, well, not anymore," he yelled, "GOOD!" And walked away from me. He didn't offer to make it right or seat us next or anything. It was such a simple issue to solve, and he had every chance to make it right, but chose to literally walk away from a customer who was voicing a legitimate concern. I felt like I was in a parallel universe. Even the customers at the bar were a little bit horrified at his reaction.
ANYWAY, if you've gotten this far (first of all - thanks!), I urge you to not patronize this business any longer. We've had some less than stellar experiences before, but this sealed the deal. I could even forgive the "reusing chips" incident of several years ago and trust the situation had been remedied, but this was basically unconscionable. I don't often (read: never) seek to "cancel" anyone's business, but businesses that treat people with disabilities as second class citizens? Hard pass. We have choices where we spend our vacation money, and this is not where I will be spending mine. I'm never going back under any circumstances and will be letting my many friends and family members who frequent Su Casa know about the sub-human treatment we...
Read moreLet me set the scene: I was vacationing in South Haven with a small group of friends. We were looking for a traditional Mexican restaurant to dine at for lunch, and we found Su Casa. We thought "Oh, they have some good reviews! Let's check it out." We enter the restaurant, which was clean, welcoming, and vibrant. We were greeted upon arrival by the bartender. Our server came, introduced himself, and quickly took our drinks orders. Once he came back, we had decided on the House made Chips and Salsa to start us off. This is where our experience began to decline. The chips were overcooked, and under salted. The salsa options were served in small sauce cups and not your typical wide-rimmed salsa bowl. Mind you, it cost $7 for runny salsa, bland pico, and a few slices of pickled carrots. We thought to put this unappetizing appetizer behind us and order entrees. I cannot give you the exact dishes everyone in my group ordered, but none of us were pleased with our meals. The meats were dry and bland, the rice was undercooked, and the tortillas were stiff and flaky. To say I was disappointed in this experience would be an understatement. While I can appreciate a great staff with a fun atmosphere, I would not be able to recommend the food at this establishment which is a shame because I feel it held so...
Read moreI'll start off by saying whoever the manager/owner on duty was very pleasant. I can't say the same about the hostess who seemed just generally irritable from the moment we walked up. The server was nice, generally very quick, checked on us regularly, but very difficult to communicate with. The food was just... okay. My wife and I eat at a lot of authentic Mexican and tex-mex restaurants all over so we come with high expectations. The pico and salsa tasted really great! Definitely a highlight. Perhaps the only one for us. The chips were fresh (I've seen some reviews about recycled chips but it seems maybe we got lucky? I would be mortified to eat something unsanitary and recycled like that.) The quesadillas were nothing like I've ever had and not necessarily in a good way. The cheese and steak inside were good but the tortillas they used seemed like corn street taco tortillas that were stale. They were also very small for the price of the plate. The rice was great. Beans were a nice consistency but not as flavorful as expected. I can't comment on drinks since we didn't order any other than the fact that what I spotted coming out of the bar looked great. Maybe I just don't get the style or I picked the wrong things off of the menu but overall this is a hard pass on...
