My wife and I met a friend for appetizers desert and drinks last Saturday. We arrived to the upstairs bar at 8:15pm. I order the flourless cheesecake and Arancini Pomodoro which were pretty good. My friend ordered the 1923 drink which was Hendricks, pineapple juice and either sour mix and club soda. He did not like it so he did not finish. My wife got a bottle of Cabernet and our friend had 2 glasses of that. An hour and a half later my wife asked for another bottle of wine and we were met with a rude manager telling her no when we asked why she asked who was driving, my wife said her and pointed to me. I only drank water all night and the server even explained to the manager that I only drank water. We reiterated to her multiple times that we only came for drinks appetizers and dessert and when we continually asked why she was refusing to give us another bottle she kept asking again and again who was driving then said no, then said maybe you can have a glass of wine but not another bottle. 2 people of the 3 of us sharing two bottles of wine over 3-4 hours is not drastic and their was a confirmed designated driver whom only had water. This was our first time here, and we were excited to just have drinks appetizers and dessert and catch up and enjoy the environment. The environment was great. The server was great. However, I’m still appalled and shocked, and even embarrassed at how this woman stood at our table for 15 minutes arguing with us, called herself a manager, and tried to tell us no and then when asked who was driving, and when the server confirmed that I was only drinking water for the few hours that we had been there she still tried to downgrade it from a bottle of wine to a glass of wine then she finally caved in and gave it to us, but it took 20 minutes for the bottle of wine to get to our table and by that time we were the only table in there. I am curious as to why this woman would not give us the service requested. The only thing I can think is it was discrimination because me and my wife are two women and are married, and we were with another gay man… I would love an explanation if somebody would like to reach out to me. I may stop in this week and request to speak to this manager and or the owner because I’m still bothered by this nine days later. I work in the service industry. I am a bartender and a server myself and I was a customer service manager for many years so this should not have happened the way it happened. Where I work this would have never happened...

When I arrived, I ordered an Elijah Craig Manhattan. However, when I received it, the drink tasted way too strong. I usually prefer my Manhattans on the sweeter side, but this one tasted more like an Old Fashioned—definitely not what I wanted. I politely sent it back and asked for a Coke instead.
The server responded with unnecessary attitude, telling me that they don’t accept drinks back. I explained that I didn’t want the drink anymore because the flavor was off—it may have been the bitters, the sweet vermouth, or lack of simple syrup—but either way, it wasn’t enjoyable, and I just wanted something else. She continued to give me attitude, and from that point on, she was rude throughout the entire meal.
This is a nice establishment, and I do enjoy it overall, but it’s not the best in the world. When I’m paying these kinds of prices, I expect excellent service. If I politely say I don’t like a drink and request something else, I expect the server to accommodate me without the attitude.
Honestly, I felt like there might have been some underlying bias involved. I happen to be a person of color, and looking around, I noticed that the area was predominantly white. I hold my servers and bartenders to a high standard, but I’m always respectful and I always tip at least 20%. I also know what I want and communicate that clearly—I’m not rude, just direct. Maybe she wasn’t used to that, or maybe she’s used to dealing with more passive guests. Regardless, her behavior felt dismissive, and I couldn’t help but wonder if my appearance or demeanor played a part in how I was treated.
She did eventually take the drink off the bill, which I appreciated, but the attitude she gave me throughout the meal is what left a bad taste in my mouth—more than the cocktail ever could. I hope management can speak with her, and if I return, I expect to be treated with respect—no lip, just good service.
Again, the food and atmosphere were wonderful. But the server’s attitude really soured...
