Growing up with 3 adopted Korean sisters, my folks went to great lengths to integrate the culture of their heritage into our lives. So, I am no stranger to Korean food. This being said, Kim's Restaurant is the absolute best, my favorite Korean food of all-time.
The restaurant is very traditional and run by a mother and daughter team. The daughter is a fun mix of genuine, honest and quirky and has always brought a smile to our face. Her mother is a gracious hostess who will remember you the second time you come back.
Before moving away from Spokane, we ate here at least once a month for over a decade. There is no other restaurant in Spokane County that I can say that about. Once, while returning from a long trip, we called in an order to go minutes before they closed. They kept their doors open for us for an extra 25 minutes, not even realizing we were regular customers.
If you are not feeling adventurous, stick with the Japchae made with potato noodles and marinated beef and vegetables or the Bulgogi (marinated grilled beef with stir fried vegetables and rice). The Mandoo (dumplings similar to won-tons) are excellent too. For the more daring, there are some excellent traditional dishes (try the Pike).
I am a huge fan of Kimchi and theirs is first rate. Living in a small coastal Oregon town now, Kim's is the one restaurant in all of Spokane that we miss the most.
Thank you for a decade of always consistent quality, we...
Read moreToday I would put 0 stars if I could. That was my favorite place until last night. First, my daughter went there to eat with her friend, and I tried to order the food to go to take to me when they were done eating. I called in and tried to make a to go order, told them that my daughter is there right now, and I'm trying to make an about $60 order, plus tip, right? No, they told me that they don't know what I'm talking about. All I wanted was beef Galbi, 2 meat kimbap, and an extra dry banchan. They told me that they can't take the order over the phone, and that my daughter should place an order since she's already there. She couldn't find the stuff I wanted on the menu. I decided that since she is close to Sushi Blossom, she should get me that but I still wanted kimbap. She ordered 2 kimbap with meat to go, one for herself and one for me, paid $24 plus tax and tip. Normally one order is either 12 or 14 pieces each, 2 rolls each order. She got 8 pieces for almost $30!!!! We paid for 2 orders plus tip for 2, but got only one roll instead of 4. I am so upset, and even though their stuff tastes the best, I will probably still order it, but I will be checking every box right at the spot instead of when...
Read moreUpdate - still the Kim's I remember (even the crocheted seat covers! ) and love, and compare all Korean food to.
On my last trip to Spokane I searched in vain to find a decent restaurant that serves decent Asian food - any type... I ate at a couple Chinese places, and a Thai place. All had great reviews, but fell woefully short of being good. I just happened to find Kim's and ate there last night. It's a hole-in-the-wall, but it's clean and the food is authentic, and good...
I had all but given up on finding any decent food that didn't cost an arm and a leg on my last trip here. Kim's has restored my faith in finding good food where ever I travel....
It's hard to find, and not a fancy place - but that's probably why it's real, not the pseudo-Chinese food they seem to favor up here...
BTW, I just read Floyd's review (Jan 23, 2010), and it's spot on...
Speaking of charming - I had never eaten this style of Korean food, so the owner showed me how to make the little rolls with the rice and dried seaweed... And even fed me the first roll... Too funny...
Happy SoCal guy...
