TL:DR food was good but staff were very rude and kind of shady when I accidentally left my phone there.
We ate at Egg Midtown this weekend for my husbands birthday. At some point my purse took a nose dive and a bunch of its contents spilled out. I thought I had managed to place everything back inside but I somehow missed grabbing my work phone. (Unfortunately I have to carry a lot of stuff for work. It’s my own fault for not double and triple checking that my work phone was safely placed back in my purse.)
After tearing apart my house and vehicle, it was apparent that it was most likely at the restaurant. I called them first thing this morning. The first woman I talked to was nice and said, “Yes. We have it here.” Then she passed the phone off to I’m assuming a manager. I’m not sure. He never identified himself.
I explained my reason for calling and he said, “We don’t have your phone.”
I said, “What?! The lady before you said you guys have it.”
He shouted at me, “We don’t have your phone! She NEVER said that! She must’ve misheard you because WE DON’T HAVE YOUR PHONE.”
I had the phone on speakerphone the whole time so my husband can back me up that I wasn’t being crazy or misremembering. She definitely said that they had my phone. Either way even if she did misspeak, perhaps she couldn’t hear me well and misunderstood what I had asked. Either way, you certainly don’t snap on someone who’s just trying to track down their phone.
I waited tables for 5+ years in my past. I never would snap at someone like that. Why?? It was so weird. I certainly try to give everyone some grace but that interaction was just rude and bizarre.
I tell him which booth we sat at. I asked him if he’d double check it. I gave him my name and my phone number in case he or anyone else finds it. He assures that it’s probably not there but he’ll let me know if he finds it.
I call my work IT dept to try to locate the location of the phone. Thankfully they could track it. It was located at the address of Egg Midtown.
I call my work phone over and over and over. I can tell the battery isn’t dead. Finally after 10-15 minutes nonstop calling, someone answers. They wouldn’t identify themselves. It kind of sounded like the same person as the first rude guy, but maybe it wasn’t. They tell me they’re an employee at Egg and asked if I know who’s phone it is. (Umm, probably that lady’s phone that called you 20 minutes ago looking for a lost phone.) They tell me they’ll save it for me at the bar.
I go in and tell the bartender who I am and that I’m there to get my phone. She says ok. Then proceeds to make 3 drinks for other people. Doesn’t get me my phone. Eventually a male employee walks over to get some stuff from behind the bar. I tell him, “Hi. I’m here to get my phone. Can you help me?” He gives me my phone. It was actually right in front of where I was standing on the other side of the bar.
It’s such a shame. Our breakfast was great the other morning but this weird, rude, kind of shady seeming interaction will spoil that...
Read moreI generally don't do Google review but honestly, the customer service was kind of outstandingly bad.
I came in by myself, dressed down with my work backpack. I had a slow workday and figured I'd treat myself to a working breakfast - big mistake.
One, the hostess asked a couple (one of whom used a cane to walk) to move from a bigger table to a smaller table. It was a Thursday morning before 10:30 am. They were at less than 75% capacity. It would've been fine. If they were busy, I'd understand, but they weren't.
Two, I was overlooked SEVERAL times throughout the visit. First. I was overlooked while waiting to have my order taken once I was seated. Other parties were tended to multiple times before I gave up on waiting and had to wave someone down. (They weren't particularly busy.)
I asked for an oat milk latte. And don't get me wrong, every places lattes are different, but this latte was basically black coffee with a splash of oat milk foam. It was legitimately dark brown. I have on many occasions found lattes to have too much milk, but never have I asked for a milkier latte. When I asked the waitress about this she said "well, maybe the espresso was just a little strong for you and overtook the milk." ... The waiter who actually was helpful offered to have it remade. Unfortunately, the person who remade my latte was the original waitress. She proceeded to ask me if I wanted a latte with half a shot of espresso, but I explained that I barely tasted the milk, as if there wasn't any milk in there. She acted as if I didn't know what a latte is and basically brought me the same thing.
When she brought the food and latte out, I asked for some of their chipotle salsa. She said "we don't have chipotle salsa." They literally have a chipotle hash listed under their El Cerdo Hash. I saw it, which was the reason I asked for it. (The salsa was delicious, btw.)
Finally, when I asked for a to-go box with extra potatoes and salsa to go, I was met without the salsa - not the end of the world, but annoying at this point.
It just felt that by the end of my time at Egg@Midtown, that I was overlooked because I was alone, look young, and was dressed down. This is the location by SLU, so I'm assuming that the staff maybe thought I was a student studying, but that shouldn't have an effect on how I was treated.
The food was a solid four. But having to deal with less than lukewarm customer service was a one. So, I'm splitting the difference and giving Egg a two. Being spoke down to isn't worth the pretty good, but...

Food: 1.5 star Service: 1 star
To be fair, its a new brunch of a popular restaurant with many ppl during the visit so some chaos might be forgivable. But since it’s the second branch, I though they are experienced. They were not.
Service: again they were busy so slightly understaffed. But our waiter keep forgetting bring the essential such as water and utensils. One napkin even came dirty (Shown in photo). We have to asked many time of different waiters to get our stuff. A bit minor but they express unwillingness to split the bill because it’s clearly “harder” and “more works” for them to do so. Sounds like we are forced to do the splitting ourself so its easier for them. Not a pleasant experience one should expect.
Food: tastes are arguably subjective, but there are certain indication of questionable foods. The El Cardo I ordered is very salty, the French toast is clearly burnt (shown in photo) and the Corn bread Benedict with MahiMahi have strong fish smell and meat tougher than overcooked chicken breast.
A brunch restaurant is supposedly a place for the good dinning experience where they failed terribly to delivered. I truly hope this is isolated incident where we are just victims of understaffed and overwhelmed kitchen, but one thing clear to me is they surely need further training to live up with the name of original location. The experience from this visit made it very difficult for me to recommend this restaurant to any...
