I had never tried Puerto Rican food, but I was blown away! So many incredible flavors and unexpected ingredients.
I ordered the Queso Frito and the Vegan Jibarito. The Queso Frito was delicious. The guava sauce on the side was really interesting--I love guava with savory tastes--and I tried it with the mayo ketchup, as well, and then I tried them mixed together. The cheese has a great "bouncy" texture. I'd compare it to paneer or halloumi.
The Vegan Jibarito came out while I was finished the fried cheese and it is HUGE! Two flat pieces of mashed and fried plantain holding avocado, tomatoes, pickled onions, vegan mayo, bits of potato straws (like those ones you get in a can--so surprising and tasty!), and lettuce. I'm surely leaving something out. All the flavors went together SO well.
The gentleman who took my order must have been one of the owners. We talked about yard sales, his sons looking for toys there for themselves and to display at the restaurant, and my Google Maps hobby. Very personable, and he thanked folks as they left, which is rare and special.
I have one VERY small gripe, which is that the handrail between the two areas of the restaurant and the bathroom door felt very sticky. Other than that the restaurant was SO clean, so I bet it was just a bad batch of a cleaning product, but I wanted to point it out. It did nothing to dull my experience, and I'll certainly...
Read moreUsually Tuesday is sushi night. Since we've been doing this for a while, we decided to change and go for something different and this time it was Mayo Ketchup. Since it was our first time we only ordered "shareables". we ordered the Mini Empanadas (Cheese) that came with guava sauce. The contrst between the savory empanadas with the sweetness of the sauce worked perfectly together. beef Empanadas was also a good choice and sauce that came with it explained where the name came from. the cuban Bruschetta was also a good choice even though by the time i was home, all the bread was not as it should be "Crispy/ crunchy" other than that, the goat cheese and tomato we a perfect match together. Sorullitos weren't my favorite and i am not sure if i would order them next time, but my wife liked them and she might ask for them. Finally the tostomes con aguacate, if i can have the smashed avocado and the pickled onion by itself, i would order it without even thinking, it was really good, but the only thing we were not a big fan of was the fried plantain. They were tasteless and the texture was not like a fried as to have it double fried. Overall a very great experience and would diffidently go back to...
Read moreThis place sits in a cute corner in front of Lafayette Park. The menu is not huge but it doesn’t have to be because it’s about quality. My family and I ordered the sorrullos and fried yuca to start. The yuca was perfectly crisp and the sorrullos (cornmeal fritters)had a hint of sweetness that paired just right with their mayo ketchup (dipping sauce). For the entrees I had the vegan bowl which offered black beans and rice, avocados, fried plantains and sweet plantains plus pickled onions. My hubby had the Ropa Vieja bowl which is a Cuban dish and my son had the Pernil (pork) and arroz con gandules bowl which is a Puerto Rican dish. all the dishes come with fried and sweet plantains. Both were delish and the amount, even though my husband was skeptical, was just right for two hungry men. To finish our meal, we ordered the Tres Leches Cheesecake which was divine! This is a great addition to St Louis’ food vibe. The service was warm and the place is super cute! I look forward to coming back many times! Btw, they have outdoor seating and street parking in the area...
