First let me say this was my first bad experience at a Jazz St. Louis sponsored event. I brought four tickets to see Branford and Wynton Marsalis, the legends at the Chase Park Plaza. Initially, I was unable to purchase my tickets online due to a purchase limit that was not communicated via any platform. I contacted the box office and no one answered so I left a message. I made the purchase via phone and was told I would receive my tickets via mail. A week before the event, I realized I didn't receive my tickets. I emailed the box office and left a message. No response. I went to the box office and was told all tickets would be held at will call. Despite repeating my email address to me, I learned my initial confirmation email went to an email address on file from 20 years ago so it was resent to the correct email.
The day of the show. Everything I received and was published indicated a 7:00p start time. However, I received an email mid day that said it was a 8:15p start time and seating was first come first serve in my section. Due to the number of people in my party, It was too late to change my arrival time. I arrived at 6:45p to a long line that I had to cut thru to obtain my tickets at which time I learned someone in my group were given the tickets. I waited 10 minutes for the person with the tickets to make it to will call. We went in and eventually learned that the person seating my section missed a row so people just walking in after 7:45p were sitting in front of me. I did not receive prior notice the Marsalis brother's would not perform until 8:30p until I looked at the program. However, they did not take the stage until 9:15p. Mr. Goins was in the spotlight for the first song. He plays well but I did not pay to see him. For the second song they began to spotlight the pianist as if we were at the end of the show. By this time, I was simply too tired to pay attention and left. I have no idea how long the set lasted but Joe Torrey jokes added nothing to the show. I would have rather listened to the students play. I don't understand the set change between the award given to Mr. Sanborn and the start of the show as there was only a podium and mics in front of the set. In passing, several random people commented this event always start late. In other words, after a long day of work and rushing to get to the event on time, I feel Jazz St. Louis should be respectful of one's time by starting on time and providing more information regarding programming, tickets, etc. prior to the event. I will never attend another...
Read moreRotten experience - went to this restaurant last Tuesday night. It wasn't a concert night, so maybe when they play Jazz there, it's different, but it was truly a terrible experience when we went. We had reservations for four, and arrived to a half empty restaurant, and were seated literally 10 feet from the bar. So we expected some level of average service.
No one came to our table for close to 15 mins. When the waiter did, he asked if we were ready to order dinner. We asked (asked mind you - at a restaurant!) if we could have drinks first, to which the waiter cooly said 'of course'. We then waited for another 10-15 mins until the waiter came back and said 'your drinks are on the way, are you NOW ready to order your entrees'? We again asked if we could first order several appetizers, which we did. Our drinks finally came, and again we were asked if we were ready to order our entrees. We ordered our entrees, the appetizers showed up - and we waited and waited and waited another 25 mins before anyone showed up again. No one came to see if we wanted more drinks, and while people around us who had showed up later than us were served, we continued to wait, and these were salads that had been ordered - dishes that could have been made quickly. Unfortunately when they did show up, the lettuce was wilted, and they were entirely sub par.
The whole restaurant staff seemed confused. I must have seen 4 instances where the food was brought to the wrong outside table, and then brought back in again. I saw only two waiters actually taking orders. I even had to chase down our waiter to get my check so I could get out of there. I thought of stiffing the waiter on the tip (actually I thought several times of just walking out completely), but realized the waiter was the only one really running around trying to get anything done, and it wasn't his fault that his manager/owner had understaffed the place that night. The waiter - Maurice - wasn't exactly unfriendly, but he did not go out of his way to be friendly either. In fact, no one at the restaurant was friendly. I won't go back, and I won't recommend anyone to go either. I'm at the Grand Center regularly, but will never go to the...
Read moreWe arrived @ 7:04 pm barely yet finally found 3 seats together. We ordered out food & it was 8:13 pm when finally received my gumbo. The gumbo was tasty yet cold. I asked for my bill, the waiter returned .20 minutes later with my bill & one of my girlfriends bill, my other girlfriend who received her food @ 7:55pm was told her meal/bill was "on the house"- We three were surprised since we all order @ the same time & my gumbo was served last (much later) than their food. The waiter took my payment, I paid with credit card & selected a paper receipt. I remind the waiter twice to plz bring my paper receipt- he never brought my receipt the show ended & I couldn't find him anywhere on the balcony where we sat or on the main floor of the venue,as we chatted with friends & relatives heading toward the exit & valet. I need the receipt for tax purposes. In the past my STLjazz experiences have been sweet, unfortunately on July 19, 2025 STLjazz...
