I stopped and took time as I departed to document the disabled smoke alarm and dysfunctional fire escape serving the 2nd floor rooms. The rooms are all located above a commercial kitchen and there were no sprinklers added in the remodel. The fire marshal needs to be notified and reassess the danger here. Future safety is my motivation for leaving this review.
Also of note, the entire balcony was boarded up with cheap plywood. When the toilet flushes the sink in the kitchenette gurgles - very gross at the least. A dangerous hidden step-down exists between shower and sink and bare plywood left when viewed from below. I fell but was able to catch myself. Excess paint and gaps in baseboard installation further evidence the remodel was not professional.
Aside from safety concerns, the ceiling of the second floor booms with every single footstep overhead. On the worst night we were kept awake past midnight, awoke to a 3:15am restroom break and finally the 5am departure of the guest above. Other nights were less extreme and presumably experiences on other floors would be different but having a guest of any sort above you on floor 2 is a miserable experience.
This property was abandoned for decades and sits in a vacant development zone with empty lots as neighbors. It's an admirable effort to turn it into something viable, but there is no excuse for disabled smoke alarms and neglected escape routes. Something is amiss in the ambition of the owners to promote this space in the state it was in. Safety should come first. Comfort next. Only then can your guests enjoy being wowed by what could have...
Read moreWhenever traveling, B&B's have always been our preferred form of lodging, Grand Center Inn stands head and shoulders above every other experience. We loved this place! The hosts were above and beyond to make our stay comfortable.||||Eric was welcoming, friendly and reaching out to us before arrival and checking in during our stay, to see if we needed anything, including, recommendations for places to visit while in the city, to coordinating last minute airport transportation, wen our taxi was a no show. It was great to sleep well and awake each day "rearing to go". The shower was nice and hot with top quality fixtures. This is a beautifully restored historic building with modern comforts that everyone can appreciate, flat screen televisions, Keurig coffee and reliable Wi-Fi, and frankly, the photos do NOT do this place justice. It is beautiful! The property is located in the heart of the theatre district. As first time visits in the city, safety is a high priority. I'd selected this place for that reason. We enjoyed a peaceful stay and felt comfortable enough to explore the area on foot several times. Our week-long visit could not have been more been more delightful. We had become so attached to the inn; we spent our final evening playing a game of Clue in the parlor. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and highly recommend the Grand Center Inn to...
Read moreMy son and I came to St.Louis for the Blues game June 1st. He and I do at least one game a year, sometimes two. Over the years I have always stayed in a downtown hotel with complicated parking and crowded hotels. I decided to change it up this time and found this B+B and I am so glad I did! From the moment I walked up the front stairs I was in love with this place! It was absolutely beautiful inside and out! I was warmly greeted at the front door by Francesco, one of the caretakers. (I hope I spelled his name correctly). My son and I were completely impressed and were served breakfast in our room which was excellent! I only felt bad for Francesco because he had to carry our breakfasts on a silver platter up 44 stairs! I had to laugh a little bit because he was completely winded but I want him to know that I felt terrible almost. he was great and my son and I are so looking forward to coming back when we make a trip to see the Blues! I highly recommend this place it was absolutely amazing,I wish I could have...
