This is the closest Brother's Pizza to my workplace in town. They're all independently owned and operated, so they all vary a little. This one is a good location with NY style pizza that's the BEST of the four in town. Nothing beats NY style from New York, but Brothers is about as close as you can get to it in State College.
Love the crust, love the sauce, and love the amount of cheese they pile on for extra. "Extra" really means something to these people, just like the Northland Center Brother's location.
Five stars for the pizza, four to three stars for other food.
I've dined in, taken out, and received delivery from this place for many, many years. They're consistently good. Unlike some of the other Brother's in town, this one has consistently cooked their pizza perfectly.
Delivery is reasonable, from 30 to 45 minutes, but I've been dining in more often these days.
The owners are like a 'mom and pop' team. If you're a regular during the day, you'll be seeing them all the time. You might see other staff during evenings/weekends. The owners are great people once you get to know them. Other reviews mention interactions that were rude or abrasive, and I think that's due to the owner's short patience in dealing with problems/upset people, regardless of who's at fault. This area gets a lot of turnover from those visiting Penn State. But if you treat them with respect, they'll do the same. Heck, once they know you they'll even stop over and chat with you sometimes. Butch and Cathy are really nice people!
I know their decor isn't everyone's taste. You'll find references to the Grateful Dead, assorted hippie paraphernalia/peace symbols, photos of the owner's bee-keeping hobby, and even the leg lamp from Christmas Story (lol, love it!). At least it keeps things...
Read moreI haven't had Brother's Pizza for a several years. It was around 8:50 at night I decided to stop to get a pizza and the person making pizza (most likely owner or manager) ihad a very bad attitude necause the first thing they said was all I could order was pizza. So I ordered one and asked for it to be plain with extra sauce. Since there was nobody else there, i watched them make it and I again ased for extra sauce, I the guy said, "Don't worry, I'm not going to rip you off." He then instead of just making it with a little extra, they put the cheese on it and them poured more sauce randomly in different places on the pie... It served as a good reminder of why I haven't purchased Pizza at Brother's for several years... There are many other places to get much better Pizza than Brother's in State College... You definitely want to go somewhere else! After posting this, I read other reviews. I noticed the same pathetic responses to the same problem of heinous treatment of customers and poor quality of food. Clearly the ownership and management only gives lip service with responses proving they truly don't care because nothing changes. Some places somehow manage to stay in business simply because the student population is cycling in and out of the area. Hopefully more people make their decisions based upon reviews in the future where the real message can be sent by nobody buying...
Read moreI am amazed at the other reviews and don't know how my experiences here have been so different. My boyfriend and I visit this Brothers routinely -- I'd say a couple times a month. We love it, every time. The pinball machine is a fun little perk, but we're absolutely there for the food.
I will say that $1.50 for any kind of extra sauce is a little much, but that is my whole list of complaints. We've never had service problems, we enjoy the food a great deal, and I think the pizza itself is fantastic. We usually chat with the waitstaff or owner a while when we're there, and they've been nothing but friendly. Butch may be a little rough around the edges, but he's a good guy and he knows how to cook-- he's often in the restaurant working hard and making something delicious. I don't see what more I could want from a restaurant owner!
When compared to the competing Brothers Pizza locations around town, this is my favorite without question. The ingredients are obviously good quality and fresh, the portions are enough to leave me with leftovers most of the time, and the prices are perfectly fair. Though I've never tried any of the wild specialty pizzas advertised around the dining area, I have heard plenty of other patrons pretty excited about those, too!
I'll continue to be a Hamilton Brothers regular as long as they...
