The Committed Pig was the site of our meal after the First of the Year Hike (conveniently located less than 10 minutes from Watchung Reservation). Our requirements were simple - be open on New Year's. We were also hoping pooch accommodations might be available, but alas - January is not exactly the best time to find comfortable outdoor seating, so we bid our canine chum adieu beforehand (hopefully he had something scrumptious at home). I've been to the location in Morristown within the past year or so, and enjoyed a cattle-centric dinner there. It's deceptively casual; it comes off as almost an edgy, gastropub-ish type place, but the menu is mostly straightforward brunch options and burgers. And at least for the now two Pigs I've been to, BYO.

We stopped in around 2ish, and the place was very busy; we had maybe a 10-minute wait, which was more than reasonable for a crew that didn't (and really couldn't - you rarely know exactly when a hike is going to end) make a reservation beforehand. I was pretty famished but thought it might be a little naughty to go straight for the bovine on January 1 so I went with the Garlic Avocado Grilled Cheese, which also came with a light tomato pesto spread. Very tasty and the garlic gave it a nice overall flavor; if you've been to a Tropical Smoothie Café, they had a flatbread version of this last summer, which was slightly better in my opinion - they didn't go as heavy on the cheese. But this one had generous helpings of avocado, which is typically an add-on that places skimp on when they can. The waffle fries on the side were fine; I thought they were a LITTLE bland and needed the ketchup, but one of my chums took one for the team and gobbled most of them up in my absence.

Our table split two items as well. We went with the French toast sticks and multiple orders of hash browns (when we initially ordered those, we received two smallish rectangular pieces and realized it wasn't nearly enough - but keep in mind it's not an actual app/shareable on the menu, just a standard side). I don't recall having much of an opinion on the French toast sticks; my preferred dipping sauce option of the raspberry Nutella was overruled by someone at the table who despises Nutella - these likely would have had a more favorable impression on me otherwise. The hash browns were pleasant but nothing out of this world. Again, the blandness popped up with this potato-based side; a little seasoning on the fries/hash browns would have gone a long way here.

The service was solid. Despite the fact that the establishment was very busy, our Timothee Chalamet-lookalike waiter was pretty attentive and responsive to several of our off-menu requests (including the aforementioned hash browns and a carafe of orange juice for New Year's mimosas).

Another respectable member of the Committed Pig family; you may want to smuggle in some spices if that's a...

"Food" is the only thing that may be able to rescue this modern Summit eatery b/c it's certainly not the cleanliness or service. Cutesy decor, youthful staff, and a menu font fit for a more urban landscape, Food brings a bit of NY chic to Summit - if only the staff followed suit.

Food: The corn flake french toast was creatively crunchy with vanilla custard and honey guaranteeing a sweet deal. Our dishes appeared in good time. Though I asked for my egg moist and it was very dry.

Atmosphere: Me (21 yrs) and my mother for 1pm brunch on a Sunday. With SO many young families around with children throwing/dropping things, the great soundtrack doesn't have the calming effects it's meant to (Pheonix, Shins). Bright sunlight and no shades on side windows means I was wearing my sunglasses the entire time. There is also an astonishing amount of booster seat/spare chair traffic bustling past us - I thought I was missing out on a game of musical chairs.

Cleanliness: The floor was not swept up between families sitting at the table across from us; it was downright dirty with food bits and dust balls in the corners (easy to see in the bright sunlight). Our own table wasn't sponged down before we were lead to it, then we were forced to awkwardly stand waiting for our waitress to appear and sponge. We gave up and sat down. She eventually appear after a few minutes with a clean looking rag.

Staff: After waiting 10 minutes my mother got up to ask the host for menus - he did apologise profusely. Our water came after about 12 minutes. Once our food was served our waitress walked away before we had a chance to ask her for silver wear. Lastly, there was one waitress/host wearing high heels which clacked every time she passed us on a hard (tile?) floor - quite annoying. While the host was busy as some points, he sat at his desk looking around while we waited menu-less; if our waitress was overloaded I'd hope steps in to help her next time.

Summary: Food is trying to balance suave with family friendly, the later aspect being an afterthought dumped on them when they realised they're in Summit and not Williamsburg. Perhaps reassessing the table layout would reduce the obnoxious "chair traffic" and better communication between wide-eyed staff members (or more training?) would ensure customers like me don't fall...

I have been here before and the food was really good. I felt like a burger. I’m an average sized female. If I were any bigger, I wouldn’t have fit in the booth. There was also a slight urine odor. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe it’s the wood walls. Didn’t want to be “that” customer, so I stayed there. I ordered coffee that came in a cute thermos. I’m looking in the coffee cup like what is in there? It’s the little pourer with my cream. I guess no one taught the server not to do that. Unless that’s how they do it there which is gross. I have worked in restaurants. I know they get thrown into a bus tub after they come out of the dishwasher. I’m sure it was on the counter when the server poured the cream into it. Why would he put it in the coffee cup. I drank it anyway. Their coffee is good. I ordered the Mr. Beautiful turkey burger. Sounded delicious. I love hot peppers so the jalapeños sold me on it. HUGE disappointment. Obviously a frozen turkey burger from restaurant depot or possibly shop rite. Dry as can be!!! If I didn’t see the jalapeños I wouldn’t know they were on there. My water had more heat. Thick slices of avocado were good. Had to mush them down a bit so I could bite into the burger and not have them go flying out. Can’t recall if it had cheese on it. I’m going to say no! It came with a fried egg too that I had on a separate plate. Maybe that’s what it needed since it was more of a sunny side up egg. Which I liked. Fries were bland and warm. I like my fries hot After I added salt…….. they were tasty. I remember them being really good the last time. I was really looking forward to this since it was 4:00 in the afternoon and I hadn’t eaten since yesterday. Unfortunately it wasn’t worth it. If I go back, I’ll eat outside and tell them to put my cream on the side or just pour it in rather than put the whole pourer in my cup. Definitely won’t be ordering a turkey burger. Kind of awkward paying while the server holds the hand held device. Wish I could remember the servers name. Although he never checked back to see how everything was, he was very nice, which is why I...
