Exceptional Experience at Black Bear Diner – Food, Service, and Ambience!
From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything about our visit to the Sunnyvale Black Bear Diner was absolutely perfect. This outing was especially meaningful to us — it was the first breakfast date my husband and I had enjoyed in quite some time, a moment we set aside to reconnect and reignite a bit of romance in our relationship. Thanks to the outstanding experience we had, our time together was not only enjoyable but truly memorable.
We want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Maria, our waitress, who made the entire visit extraordinary. Her service was impeccable — a flawless combination of warmth, urgency, professionalism, and genuine hospitality. She anticipated our needs before we even had to ask, offering a level of attentiveness that is rare and deeply appreciated. She greeted us with a smile, maintained friendly eye contact, and made us feel not just like customers, but like welcome guests.
Maria exemplifies what excellent customer service looks like. She didn’t just do her job — she elevated the entire dining experience. In fact, it’s employees like her who transform a restaurant meal into something more: a family-like experience where you feel as though you’re being personally hosted by someone who truly cares.
The food was just as impressive. I ordered the steak and eggs with country potatoes and hashbrowns. While the steak wasn’t quite done to my personal preference, everything else on the plate was delicious and thoughtfully prepared. What stood out even more was how the situation was handled. When the busser noticed that I hadn’t touched the steak, he promptly acknowledged it and informed the manager — who immediately came to our table to apologize and offered either a freshly prepared replacement or to have it removed from the bill. I opted for the latter, and their response was gracious, respectful, and solution-oriented. That kind of accountability and care is exactly what I value in a dining establishment.
It’s clear that Black Bear Diner holds customer satisfaction as a top priority, and the entire team, from the kitchen staff to the front-of-house employees, reflects that commitment.
To sum it up: whether you’re looking for a hearty breakfast, a cozy brunch, lunch, or dinner, Black Bear Diner is a wonderful place to share a meal with a loved one, a friend, or the whole family. But it’s people like Maria who turn a simple outing into something heartfelt and unforgettable.
Thank you for hiring such a remarkable person. We’ll definitely be back soon — next time, we’re bringing the whole family to share in this...

I repeated for a solo Fri/Sat Prime Rib Dinner on a Saturday evening so I sat at the counter, which was empty. I was immediately asked for a beverage and I got water/no ice then ordered the dinner with grits and broccoli for sides. I requested my Prime Rib as rare as possible.
A good size house iceberg lettuce salad and cornbread muffin were brought first. After I finished the salad the Prime Rib and sides arrived with au jus and a creamy horseradish sauce. The meat was medium well and still pink inside. It was very tender with a minimal crust. A good size piece of meat and filling for me. Everything tasted great.
The staff here is trained well with respect to friendliness, courtesy, efficiency and attentiveness. A great value Prime Rib at $32.99. Definitely repeatable.

I went there on a Monday morning for a quick breakfast. The place is in Sunnyvale on west bound ECR just past Fair Oaks. There is lots of parking.
The interior is a contemporary diner table and booth setup with a Black Bear ambiance. Lots of Black Bear statues which kids might enjoy and a Black Bear newspaper with the menu concealed in the inside pages. I ordered the Corned Beef Hash without eggs, fruit and a biscuit. After a short wait my meal was brought to me and the quantities were huge. The CBH was unique with large shreds of meat and cubed potatoes. Service was good throughout my stay.
Payment is at the registers as you exit. And I noticed that I was charged the full menu price for the CBH with eggs, and told that if I were charged for the items from the ala carte menu I would pay more. I should have had the eggs and taken them home for my dog. The food was very good with Bear sized portions. Very repeatable.

We've been to Black Bear Diner a handful of times, but we will NEVER be going back there again after what happened yesterday.
When I received my pancakes, there was a hair right on top of them. Now, this happens. And even though it was gross, I just asked if I could have new pancakes. The waiter grabbed ALL my food and took it away, even though my pancakes were on a separate plate and I just asked for those to be remade. And he wouldn't listen when I said it again, twice. He just took all my food, leaving me there to stare at my dining partner with nothing. She didn't want to eat without me, so we just sat there. Fine, okay, he wants to remake everything, he is trying to be extra nice.
Then I get back a second round of all my food. Pancakes look great and I start eating them. Then I turn to get a fork full of eggs from my other plate and THERE IS A HAIR RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THEM. This time it's twice as long and baked into the top of the egg. I just about get sick. I promptly yanked it out of the eggs and marched it over to the waiter and said: "Once is a mistake. Twice is either deliberate or very bad hygiene in your kitchen. We are done."
At that point neither of us had any interest in eating there anymore or ever again. And both of us felt queasy about what we might have eaten in our few bites that we DIDN'T see.
I took a pic of the first hair when I put it on a Black Bear napkin to show the waiter. I should have taken a picture of the second too, but I was mad.
Please note that MY hair BTW, is not this color, and it was entirely bound up in a scarf at the time as well. Plus, both hairs were partially cooked INTO the food. So this was definitely a problem in the kitchen.
Gross....
