Chang Thai Tacoma — Restaurant in Tacoma

Truly excellent. Instantly our favorite Thai place in Tacoma. Great clean flavors. Not sugary, no ketchup in the phad Thai.

If you've ever loved Thai Tom in Seattle, you'll love the food here. The atmosphere is much calmer here, since you're not eating in the kitchen but in an elegant dining room.

We tried Phad Thai, basil fried rice, Panang curry, and mango sticky rice. All were fantastic, each entree was the best version I've had of that dish in a long time. The sticky rice was new to me, and really great, it came with lots of mango. The steamed white rice that came with the curry was exceptionally tasty. They clearly are using high quality ingredients. Even the little garnish of shredded cabbage was super fresh and tasted good. It was the end of the night, so I didn't expect that.

Diners at the next table recommended the Pad kee mao, pineapple rice, and Thai iced tea, which is available in traditional and green versions.

The server understood food allergies and made it easy to avoid mine. And I'm not having problems the next day, so her information was accurate even for trace amounts. The chef popped out a few times to check whether different dishes were satisfactory.

The restaurant was quiet, it was easy to hear and talk. It would be great for hearing aid wearers.

And there's easy on-site parking! I can't recommend...

The prior tenants at this location, “Golden Teak” was my family’s favorite spot for years. Great food, friendly and inviting staff, and a great atmosphere for dining in. Ever since they closed half a year or so ago, I’ve been unable to find anything even remotely close.

That changed when I went to Chang Thai for the first time last night. As I entered, the atmosphere looked almost identical to my favorite restaurant. I was then greeted by a familiar face! A former employee of my favorite spot. As I spoke with her I brought up how much we all missed the old restaurant. And that’s when she told me amazing news.. the cook is ALSO the same as my favorite restaurant!!

I can safely say what I ordered was the same delicious food that I never thought I’d taste again.

Being I know this was a lot of other people’s favorite restaurants and miss it as much as I did, I wanted to share...

First off I ordered to go, and when I got there my food was just sitting there right next to the register, right next to the door, unattended ready for anyone to walk out with it. Second the garlic chicken was preeeetty lame. It's dried out and half the pieces of chicken are so small they were cooked to leather. Honestly have had better at Safeway deli. The fresh rolls egg rolls were pretty bland and the other non peanut dip with the sampler tasted rancid. For 40$ I'm very disappointed. Only decent thing was the peanut sauce. Won't...
