The Retreat itself as a stand alone bar is an entertaining place to go drink. There are deals each night; Saturdays are five-dollar top shelf. The location is just outside of downtown traffic and easily accessible from I-275 South-Exit 5. The place has an indoor jukebox that can connect to your phone. Roughly three pool tables and two dart boards, a couple of cornhole ramps, and a healthy plot of booths and chairs. There are tvs for sport games, and the bar is what you'd expect of a full bar. Scotch, whiskey, vodka, rum, draft beers, and liquors. While all these aspects sound inviting, the employees bog this charming bar down. A bar-back (usually seen with cornrows) is known by many to be rude, prejudiced, negative, and unwelcoming. The bartenders treat their customers as if they are already drunk, and skimp at times on the amount of alcohol they give them. One man of the few seen there working does a good job--friendly, talkative, and generous (blonde short hair normally). The manager is stand-offish, condescending, and treats his customers with a straight face as if to say, "no matter what you say I know you'll come back because of how cheap the merchandise is"--which may aggravate some. If you come to this bar to enjoy a time with your friends, stay clear of the bar, their employees, and get your drinks early on so you don't have to interact with the people there.
If the employees at the bar were to revamp themselves to be more like the blonde bartender, and the manager understand he is in the service industry and must conduct himself as such, then I would happily rate this bar with four stars. Mind you, your experience may be different than the rating shown, but all I will caution you is to be aware of what was aforementioned in...
Read moreI came into this bar with a group of friends to play darts and support a local spot, but we were met with unnecessary hostility from the bartender, Jeremy. My friend had just turned 21 a week ago and brought his valid ID, which Jeremy questioned and then demanded a second form of ID with both name and date of birth. Despite showing credit cards, a student ID, and even offering a photo of his passport, Jeremy rudely dismissed everything, insisting on a physical copy of a passport, which is unrealistic to carry on a night out.
While we understand the importance of verifying age, there’s a respectful way to do it — and Jeremy made it clear he didn’t want us there from the start. He was unprofessional, condescending, and created an uncomfortable atmosphere for no reason. We weren’t being loud or rowdy — just wanted to play darts and enjoy the night.
It’s disappointing to be treated so poorly at what’s supposed to be a welcoming neighborhood dive bar. We won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for a laid-back and...
