I recently had the unfortunate experience of dining at Stables Restaurant in Terre Haute, IN, and I must say it was an absolute disappointment from start to finish. The poor service, management, and hosting left a sour taste in my mouth, and I feel compelled to share my experience to warn others.

First and foremost, the service was abysmal. The waitstaff seemed disinterested and inattentive throughout the entire meal. It took an eternity to get our orders taken, and even longer for our food to arrive. When it finally did, it was lukewarm and clearly rushed. Our server rarely checked on us, and it was a challenge to flag them down for even the most basic requests.

The lack of proper management was evident throughout the entire establishment. The restaurant appeared disorganized and chaotic. Empty tables were left uncleared, leading to an overall untidy atmosphere. It was clear that there was a lack of leadership and oversight, which reflected in the subpar dining experience.

Furthermore, the hosting was nothing short of a disaster. We arrived with a reservation but were kept waiting at the entrance for an unreasonable amount of time. The host seemed overwhelmed and unprepared, resulting in a chaotic seating process. It was evident that they were understaffed and unable to handle the flow of guests efficiently. Our evening started off on the wrong foot due to this mismanagement.

Overall, I cannot recommend Stables Restaurant based on my experience. The poor service, lack of management, and chaotic hosting all contributed to a deeply unsatisfactory dining experience. Save yourself the frustration and disappointment by considering other dining options in Terre Haute, IN. Stables Restaurant has a long way to go in improving their overall operations.

Note: I sincerely hope that Stables Restaurant takes this feedback constructively and works towards improving their service, management, and hosting to provide a better dining experience for their patrons...

Atmosphere: The dining hall is too dark, yet the table my dining partner and I were seated at had a harsh glare from a wall sconce bulb that annoyed us worse than the blaring train horns from several passing locomotives during our stay. Speaking of loud, I found the music volume a bit much. The area around our table was dirty and dusty. Service: The hostess was pleasant. Our server was nice, but seemed inexperienced, yet competent enough. One runner was fine, while the other appeared angry and was off putting. We waited too long for a couple of food items, acknowledged by the staff in the form of receiving an unsolicited dessert. Drinks: The water was adequate. The Old Fashions were affordable (if rang up properly at $8.25/ea) and ok tasting, but a bit skimpy in size. Food: The menus are not descriptive enough. The lobster bites were cooked and presented ideally, but lacked flavor. The star of the night was the spinach salad, although I wish it didn't have bacon on it (again, they need better menus). My partner and I agree that the prime rib and strip were the worst steaks we've ever had; worse than Dennys and the local breakfast diner's $11 steak and eggs. The baked potatoes were fair, but bordering subpar, with the asparagus firmly below average. Despite the disappointing experience thus far, we decided to attempt their much lauded bread pudding for dessert. It was fine for the first two bites, but found it not agreeing with my stomach after the third. My partner didn't heed my suspicions and ate more, regretting it by the time we were walking to our vehicle.

My recommendation is to dine at J. Ford if you're wanting fine dining in Terre Haute, as we've never had a...

I've frequented this establishment since it opened, have attended business dinners as well as family/celebratory/date night dinners, have given many gift cards over the years and have never had such a lackluster experience. We made the reservation for 830 and about 45 min prior to the reservation we got a text that the table was ready. We had planned to visit family in the area but instead went straight to the restaurant and was seated. We waited and waited, more tables were sat and eventually ordered drinks and appetizers...then dinner. We waited still. Finally a waiter came to us to take drink orders. I ordered an iced tea. My bfs drink came and I waited. I kept looking for the waiter and didn't ever see him. I asked a runner if I could get my drink. The waiter came back about 10 minutes later to ask for our dinner order and I again asked about the tea. I got my salad and the soup I ⁷ordered....still no tea. Finally after stopping someone else again I got my drink. I then asked for a straw and that was a huge mistake.....it took another 10 minutes at least. The evening went on like this for the remainder of the meal. I was very disappointed in that as well. I have loved the Lobster bisque since the first time I ate it but the soup I got tasted like it was straight out of a bag. The creamed spinach was burnt and dry, I couldn't even eat it, and my steak was med well despite ordering med rare. It was such a disappointment that the experience was so unenjoyable, as I always looked to Stables to be a place to go for a wonderful dining experience. I hope my experience was the exception, however I can't say I'll go back any time soon...

My fabulous new husband surprised me with my birthday dinner here (#50)! This was our 2nd time- it has yet to disappoint. Our server has been working here since it opened in 1998- talk about OUTSTANDING SERVICE!!! That also speaks volumes of the establishment, as well, to be able to retain staff for that long (particularly in the restaurant industry). Our previous server had been there for 17 years! As you can see, the decor/atmosphere is fun and original. Great concept! The Stables is literally a converted historical stables. Each booth is named after it's horse and includes the horse's photo. The food?!? Where do I even begin? We are talking GOURMET! I should have asked where the chef trained. I had the Seafood Bisque, which was, hands down, better than anything I had on the East Coast during our Honeymoon in June! The texture, the creaminess, the seasoning - absolute perfection! I also highly recommend the Creamed Spinach (who would have thought?!?) and the Black and Blue Beef Tenders appetizer (made with filet mignon and specialty Blue Cheese). Those three items made me need a few moments to myself.😍😂 But everything was delicious - those were just my STAND OUTS! While this isn't a place we can frequent, due to distance and financial reasons, this will DEFINITELY be our GO TO for special occasions! 🥰

Stables Steakhouse always has great quality food prepared just right at every visit. The staff is attentive and always ready to answer questions and offer suggestions for menu items. This is not a place to go in a hurry like some restaurants and they aren’t pushy for you to hurry or rush through this is a nice sit down dinner experience so plan for time to sit , relax and enjoy ! Appetizer suggestions : meatballs, sliders if available and lobster bites. The house salad with ranch is great! Main course: Filet mignon or tomahawk (if available) Sides: You MUST try the sweet potato casserole and the carrot balls . Dessert: Bread pudding and our kids say the chocolate cake is the best ever ! Really anything on the menu is worth a try and as mentioned above everything we’ve tried is always cooked just right and seasoned to perfection . Great place to celebrate birthdays or any special event but also nice to just meet up with friends and family for an evening and know you are going to have a wonderful meal and service.

The wait staff was all amazing, but our server, Gretchen, was fantastic! The food is a little expensive, than say, The Outback or something, but those lack all personality and charm which this was full of. The steaks were all cooked to perfection and were so yummy. The seafood soup/chowder was delicious. We were given the largest potato I've ever seen that 3 of us shared and we barely made a dent! The bread pudding was warm and melted in your mouth. We chatted with the manager, Ike, who was so super nice! If you live in, or are ever passing through Terre Haute, stop by! It's literally an old horse stable and there are little rooms/stables all inside that give you some cozy privacy. They also had a piano and I think a cello player that gave it a nice atmosphere! The downsides for us were the French onion soup and the caesar salad which were fine, but not our favorite.
