I've been here almost half a dozen times at this point and it consistently hits the right note with me. The new team seems focused on taking THBC onward and upward, and the recent renovations are moving forward efficiently. It has a cozy local pub feel, one with a connection to the community. The owners really love Terre Haute and this little jewel of TH history they have here, you can really see that love they have shine through everything they and their staff do.
I have come on weeknights just to have a relaxing drink after working with a friend as well as the typical Friday/Saturday night bar peak times. They've been consistently less crowded than I'd expect, but it seemed to be getting better. Has relaxed, casual vibe. Great beers, during the most recent renovation they've had to cut back what they have on tap, but normally they have crazy good selection. Beer flight was really reasonable and the bartender Paul, really knows his stuff. Hooked me up with 4 perfect brews/ciders based solely on a short conversation about what I like, so I was impressed. Hoping they get through renovations so I can try out a couple more flights, because it's been consistently a great way to try a bunch of different things with friends and enjoy a relaxed evening out.
Haven't gamed in the comfy armchairs yet, but I've seen groups of people who do. I'm looking forward to when that hangout section reopens after renovation, because I know there's been rumbling about a Pub Quiz or such, which would be great. They're definitely trying to make it a place for people to feel comfortable hanging out and connecting, with a lot of different irons in the fire on that vein.
Lately they've been hosting events like Art classes, Saturday morning Yoga, and concerts like you'd see in a bigger city so I'm really hopeful it keeps going on this route. This is one of the oldest brewing companies in the country (just not continuously operated) so as someone who really appreciates Terre Haute history, I think it's great that THBC is trying to bring some big town fun to the community. It's not a dancing bar, but it's not trying to be. It's just a great place to have a cold one, enjoy some grub (shout out to the beercheese pretzel!)...
Read moreWent to this Brewery / restaurant yesterday with 14 adult family members. The Very annoyed bartender told us that she had nothing to do with the restaurant and we would need to go into the other room to place our order at the back of the bar. We went into that room only to find out that it was extremely dark and there was nobody at the bar in the back of the room. Eventually someone did show up. He said he brewed the beer but he was helping the restaurant owner out because his staff did not show up. We asked if they could take care of us and he said they could. So we placed 13 food orders. Then we went to the bar and bought sodas and beer. The still very annoyed bartender rolled her eyes and sighed every time someone asked for a glass of water or a soda rather than an alcoholic beverage. Understanding that this is a brewery, but not all people in any group drink beer therefore you are going to have someone who will order soda or water. Long story short our food which came out in sporadic order and in styrofoam to-go containers with no utensils was less than subpar, and was delivered in a random order of 2 or 3 food orders about every 15 or 20 minutes, after an hour and 15 minutes we still had two people who had not gotten their food and the person who was helping the restaurant owner became very annoyed at us for asking when the food would be available and told us it was not his responsibility he was just trying to help out. He apologized, when I explained that I had called last Sunday and verified that this would not be an issue to feed this many people on a Saturday afternoon. I do have to explain that only two other people in the place had ordered food. So it was not like there were a lot of orders other than ours. When you pay $14 for a burger that you wait almost an hour to get and it comes in a styrofoam container with no utensils to eat your mac and cheese or beans with it, is most frustrating. We went to this Brewery/Restaurant because it got rave reviews. The beer was good. The bartender was very annoyed with us the entire time we were there. I would not recommend this place if you want to eat, but I am sure if you are buying beer the bartender will be very helpful and...
Read moreIf there was an option for negative stars, this place would get it. What an absolute toilet. Was there for a local high school reunion. When I walked it, the first thing that was noticeable was the pungent aroma of what could only be described as oranges and vomit; it permeated the whole place. We were also informed that we were kicked out of the private back room that the reunion had booked for a live band that was playing (at least they refunded the deposit). The assumption that I made was that the live band would bring in more people and thus would make the bar more money, however there was no forewarning to the reunion crowd that the back room was not available before we got there. So, now you have 40 people just milling around the bar area with music blaring so loud that you have to shout at the person next to you just to have a conversation. The regular food menu was, apparently, not available because the food guys weren't working that day or something? But we had a limited menu from some company was there to serve food. It was all over priced trash: $2 for a boat of popcorn, $3 for chips, $12 for 6 boneless wings and fries, etc. I will openly admit that I am not a beer drinker, so I cannot comment on how the crafted beers tasted. However, I like hard liquor and would have loved to have had a drink. However, looking at the back wall of the bar, there were literally 4 bottles of booze there, all bottom shelf. Now, where I come from, even a micro-brewery keeps a fully stocked bar. Not here, I guess. And a short beer here? $7.50. Make sure you bring your wallet... Finally, the cherry on top of the garbage pile? The restrooms are so dimly lit, you can't see yourself in the mirror without standing about 6 inches from it. After a few hours there, I had enough and went to a quiet restaurant for some real food. As another reviewed put it, "10/10 would...
