My wife and I stopped in for a late lunch at the recommendation of a coworker. We knew it would be a little pricey, but it was more so than expected. We had the gyoza, a sushi roll that was on special, tonkatsu, and teriyaki tofu. It came with rice bowls, salad, and miso soup with tea to drink. The atmosphere is nice. I would consider this a place for a date night or for a special dinner. The service was on point as the server did a good job and took care of us mostly.
As for the food, it was good, don't get me wrong, but I honestly would have expected better for this price point. To start, the gyoza was a little undercooked and flavorless. It was also served on a piece of paper put on a plate, which the dumplings tried to stick to there... rather annoying.
The sushi roll was ok. For what we got, I don't understand why we were offered little bowls for soy sauce as it wasn't either necessary or proper for that kind of sushi, but we tried it anyway as the soy sauce brand they had said it was Yamasa out of Oregon and we hadn't had that kind before. (Most places use the more famous Kikkoman, which I honestly dont care for much as there are better brands out there, imho.)
The salad looked like it was just thrown in the bowl without any thought, and then drenched in what I was told was ginger salad dressing, but I couldn't taste the ginger at all. Likewise with the soup...no care in presentation, lukewarm, and incredibly bland.
I had the tonkatsu pork cutlets. The tonkatsu was well breaded, and there were two pork cutlets, but the cuts were fairly thin for the price, and there wasn't any seasoning on the meat or in the breading. Sure, there was sauce for it, which was ok, but it was mediocre at best.
My wife had the teriyaki tofu dish. I tried a little bit of it. I immediately noticed that the molten sauce was splattered onto the incredibly hot serving plate as well as the wooden carrier without any care for cleanliness when it was brought out. The server made no comment on how incredibly hot (temperature) the dish was, and my wife had to wait quite a while for it to cool down enough so as to not get burned by the sauce that smothered everything. The vegetables were cooked well, but I noticed carrots not cleaned properly, and even the green top ends, though rounded off from processing, were left on, which my wife also noticed and didn't eat. The tofu, if cooked with a crispy crust which it looked like a poor attempt was made for such based on the coloring and slight texture difference, was left soggy from the sauce, and made it difficult to eat without having a fork. Trying to pick it up with chopsticks was virtually impossible. Even with all that, the sauce was bland as well on this dish. I would have expected a better presentation at a minimum.
Overall, the food was decent, I suppose, and the place itself and wait staff are nice. I would consider going back with hopes the food preparation and presentation were better. It's fine if you're looking to go out on a pricey date night or dinner date, but I'm not sure the prices are quite worth what you get here. Hopefully, staff will take my comments into consideration as well as similar comments from others here and improve on...
Read moreI visited this location yesterday with my wife & mother for a Mothers day dinner. When we arrived we were seated at a grill with two other parties. No biggie as this is customary in Hibachi restaurants. About 20 minutes after we had been seated another party arrived and was seated around the grill/table adjoining ours, again no biggie, but sitting things up for the kicker. We waited probably about 30 minutes before our waiter let us know that we were the next grill to be served and as soon as one of the chef's was available they'd be over to serve us. About 10 minutes later a chef was free and but started serving the party that had arrived 20 minutes after us, and who knows how long the others at our grill had been waiting. Our waiter was super polite and I can't say anything mean about him but was upset that we weren't served on a first come first serve basis.
My other big complaint was that the portion of food served was not adequate compared to other Hibachi style restaurants. I usually feel up when dining at a Hibachi restaurant, but I actually left this location still feeling hungry. The rice which is usually a good filler for the meal was barely covering the spatula when served, same with the chicken. A large plate was used to serve the food and in all honesty maybe 30% of the plate was actually used to serve the food. The price on the menu was inline with other Hibachi locations I visited so no complaints there, just the volume of food served did not meet my expectation. This was quite possibly due to the chef making a miscalculation on the amount of food needed to serve the party size as the grill adjoining our hibachi table was served 2 to 3 times the amount of food we did. This is the only hibachi I've ever been to where the chef didn't grab more food when realizing that the amount of food obtained was not adequate to feed the party size.
While we were overall pleased with the dining experience because our waiter Truman was awesome, we will likely not visit this location in the future as the price to amount of food served just didn't meet our expectations. I hope anyone who is choosing this establishment has a more pleasant experience than we did. We wanted to really love the experience and have another hibachi to visit within 45 minutes of our rural home but unfortunately this trip just didn't live up...
Read moreI went with my girlfriend and some friends. I thought oh well this will be good. The japanese man that ended up being our chef was very rude in my opinion and obviously didnt know what he was doing. Started of lighting a fire on the grill and put way to much oil and I about fell out of my chair when the flame hit me In the face. Needless to say I was a lil irritated and upset. But I remained open to this new experience as I had never eaten at this type of restaurant. The chef start flicking what I think was cucumber at my friends. Then it came to me and I said no thank I dont want food flipped at me. Instead of moving on he thought it would be funny I guess to shoot a piece of vegetable at me anyways. It hit my glasses and I flipped out. I walked out before I did or said anything irrational. I went back in to sit with my friends and girlfriend after a lengthy cool down session outside. The chef just rolled his lil cart away with no apology. i got the check and my food to go. the check was outrageous for small portion of food I got plus my appetite had been ruined by the inexperienced rude chef. I threw my food in a trash can at a gas station as I exited terre haute. My main complaint is though, if you are going to play with fire be safe and dont risk burning your patrons. Oh and the check...
