Last night was our first opportunity to visit Ezell's since they had opened. Overall, they were better than we could have imagined, and we'll be visiting them again.
Regarding the food: After eating both their chicken tenders and bone-in chicken, my son and I are ranking them as our number one place for fried chicken, and to be fair we rank Dave's Hot Chicken number one for chicken sandwiches. Two different food styles.
More about the food: We tried both versions of their chicken, the spicy and regular. Go with the spicy as it is flavorful and not spicy hot. Both were tender and moist with a delicate crispy outer coating. The coating was not too thick however held its integrity and was crisp. Their coleslaw has a good flavor and is not over-sweet. Their rolls are fluffy yeast rolls that pair well with the chicken's flavor. They are almost in the same style as an Eastern sweet roll. Although we didn't have their mashed potatoes and mac and cheese side dishes this time, we were told that they peel potatoes every day in-house to make their mashed potatoes and not from powdered potatoes. We'll report on the potatoes and Mac and Cheese next time.
Lastly on the food: Recommend combining the rolls, the chicken tenders, coleslaw, and honey mustard as a mini sandwich. You won't be disappointed.
The Service: Although I can't remember the gentleman who helped us at the counter last night, he was nice, articulate, and knew the product. It was a good start to the experience. Later we got to meet Ethan who was full of great conversation and generously sharing information. Way to go. Both made our first experience at the restaurant a welcoming experience. Although I understand that places get busy and staff need to meet the busy demands, I applaud people who take those extra minutes to make the experience a unique friendly exchange. Again, way to go and make it your own. Keep at it.
The atmosphere: it's not fancy eating, however, it's clean, organized, and well-maintained. Paper towel holders were not empty, and the soda fountain area was clean. The walls were not dirty and the seats/tables were clean. I did notice that the crew was consistently wiping and cleaning something when they were not busy with orders and guests.
Overall: This is an absolute place to visit or take out from as we did see several to-go orders...
Read moreI want to put a few considerations at the front of this review. I’m from the south, so I have a very high standard for chicken. additionally I think I went in right after they opened, so hopefully things will smooth out and I can come back and fix this review later.
Got a 1/2lb tender combo meal 50/50 with potato’s and gravy.
First off, when they say 50/50 it was more like 75/25 regular/spicy, they gave me a huge gristly 1/4lb strip and a few tiny ones(if you split one in half you might have had 2 chicken nuggets). The regular looked like it was barely cooked, breading was still white on most, but somehow it was dry in the middle, and the spicy wasn’t much special, I love spicy food, and spicy breaded chicken, but it pretty much just had franks red hot in the batter before it was fried, it was WAY over cooked on the outside (hard not crunchy, and tasted too much like the fry oil) but somehow it was nice and tender inside?!
That’s my main gripe, they just need to figure out their back end, whoever is cutting and frying needs to slow down.
The sweet roll was great, real hand rolled, and was about as sweet as a grandys roll without giving you instant diabetes. The potato’s were well seasoned, and honestly the chicken breading had potential, could have maybe used a little more pepper, but that’s my own taste, definitely way better than anything else I’ve ever tried up here! Not getting spicy again, but I would give this place another clean shot at a...
Read moreHonestly I never ate here before, this is my first time. I don't know much about the restaurant. But I did not like it, as in African-American I know this that a lot of the dishes are soul dishes. I did notice a lot of Caucasian and non people of color working there and making the food, which is not a problem at all. When I received the food they were very kind and friendly. I was so hungry to where I ate my chicken immediately. After I bit into my chicken I felt sick, maybe because when I bit into it I wasn't expecting the chicken to be so bland. I did finish the food because the chicken is very expensive. My mother-in-law ordered some fried okra, which I thought that if I would taste it I would have some flavor in my mouth. I was very wrong, because when I bit into it it felt like an untasteful mush. The only thing that I liked was the bread because the bread was soft and flavorful. Next time I go I would just order bread, but I believe the bread is free with every meal purchase. So I wonder how much it would cost just to buy bread. I probably would not eat here again, because I felt embarrassed and rude because I really felt the food was untasteful. But honestly the only thing on the menu that piqued my interest was the peach cobbler. Which I did not order because the meal that we ordered was already so high. But I don't even think I would go back for even that. Thank you for your time and...
