Adelaida V. "Addie" Borland Will Always Hold A Unique Place In The Storied History Of Tombstone Arizona
"Addie" lived in this very house when it was located on Fremont Street across from a vacant lot between Fly's Boarding House and William Harwood's home. On the afternoon of October 26, 1881, "Addie" would have the best vantage point to witness what has come to be known as the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
Adelaida V. Borland Was Born In Maine In 1845
By 1870, she had married Samuel Houston Borland, and the couple relocated to San Francisco, Califirnia. Like so many others, "Addie" and Sam moved to Tombstone after Ed Schieffelin's discover of silver in the hills nearby. While in Tombstone "Addie" engaged in the business of dressmaking out of her home. She was a very experienced seamstress and according to reports, she had a very successful business. Although she and Sam would divorce in Tombstone, "Addie" remained in this house.
October 26, 1881 Was A Dreary Day
It was cloudy, cold, blowing rain and snow. You can read "Addie" Borlands testimony of the events as she saw them that day as they appeared in both the Tombstone Epitaph and the Tombstone Nugget newspapers on either side of this piece. As youwill find, "Addie" did not see much. She ran to the rear of this house when the first shots were fired. One thing you will also find in these papers is the Wells Spicer visited "Addie" in this house during the recess for lunch. He questioned her here and reacalled her after lunch. Because "Addie" is unable to provide any clear descriptions of the participants or their weapons, one can conclude that there is a distinct probablility that "Addie" was quite nearsighted after years of sewing. This possibility and the inclement weather may have made it even more difficult for her to see the events that unfolded.
Addie" Borland Returned To San Francisco Shortly After The Earp Inquest
She then appears prominently in the Los Angeles Time newspapers in 1886 again advertising a dressmaking business. She also is listed as a founding member of Crystal Lodge No. 65 of the United Endowment Associates and the Ladies Annex of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce in 1890. It is here that we lose track of "Addie". To date, we have not located her date of death or burial location. However, the fact still remains that you are standing in the house where she witnessed the beginning of the most famous gunfight in the history of the old West, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

I ran into the owner/proprietor at the Oriental Saloon in Tombstone where he was at the bar with two other men and his dog laying on the floor. We ordered drinks sat at a table. His dog came to us friendly and we petted him and we gave the dog a small potato chip. Instead of Nicely asking us to not feed his dog. He approached our table and started with vulgar language directed at us. Finally they left after the bar tender stopped the exchange of words between us. Well thought that was that done. On way back to hotel we had been to this bar before several times while we were in the Sierra Vista area years ago let’s stop have a beer. Well as we walked in the owner stopped us who happened to be r the guy with the dog. In front of all of the people there he swore and said I am the owner get out of my bar and actually got in my space We walked away and will not come back. He followed me out to the public sidwalk and still was confronting us about the dog issue. If he doesn’t want to have someone feeding his dog keep him on a leash for it’s on safety I’m done and...

We had visited four deuces over the Labor Day weekend we spent over $300 in merchandise and drinks at your saloon. We bought shirts and hats when we washed the shirts all the decals came off. We called to let someone know that the decals had come off the shirts. The gentleman who answered the phone said we were supposed to have gotten instructions on how to wash the shirts they were supposed to be washed inside out for the first two washes. We were never given instructions and we never got a little card that he said we should’ve received. So we spent all that money for shirts that have no decals. The gentleman did not try to help at all basically said oh well we didn’t give you instructions so to bad that was very disappointing. We will never go back there again. For such a famous place and the nice people that were in tombstone, you would think they would have better customer service...

We visited on 7/17/25 - stopped in for a quick drink. About fifteen minutes after leaving I realized my cash was not in my pocket and remembered pulling my phone out while at Four Deuces. We went back with the smallest of hope that I dropped it there and someone found it and turned it in. As it turns out the bartender found it and when I came back she knew why and had my money. It was over $150 . I thanked her with a tip but wanted people to know the integrity she showed and that she is an awesome human being! I wish I had asked her name - but she told me she had relatives from Illinois (where I’m from) so I hopes the owners identify her and give her a pat on the...

Tombstone AZ and it's pubs and restaurants give you the feeling of being back in the Wild Wild West. The ambience is great and the food is also very good. The entire day of being here is just a unique experience by itself. Definitely worth a visit. We will be back.
