The most delicious Mexican food I have eaten on Long I since I moved to New York from California 40 years ago!! It is fresh, inventive, well-prepared and nicely presented and divine. This is not your run of the mill rice and beans tacqueria that everyone on Long Island settles for. This is real authentic Mexican, the way it should be. My friend and I ordered margaritas which were perfectly bright, refreshing and served the way they're supposed to be served. The tortilla chips were fresh and the salsa had just the right amount of zing. We ordered the Empanada Mariscos appetizer, a seafood empanada appetizer which was very fresh and delicious. My friend ordered the Enchiladas Campenchano, which looked so delicious, I asked to taste the sauce. She wasn't as familiar with Mexican food. But she absolutely loved it and can't wait to come back. Amazing. Guess what I am ordering on my next visit?! I ordered the mole enchiladas. Can I say OMG!!! Rich, complex, and wonderfully silky and excellent, the mole was perfectly prepared and presented, as it should be, on corn tortillas filled with tender, juicy chicken. The Mexican chocolate in the sauce absolutely sang. Incredible. I had goosebumps!! It tasted like more. Since we were celebrating a birthday we ordered Coffe Flan!! Melt in your mouth, indescribably rich and delicious!!! It was light and smooth with just the perfect amount of coffee flavor. Succulent. The staff surprised my friend with a generous piece of tres leches with a candle on it, and they sang happy birthday to her. She was thrilled.
Summary: The ambiance is bright and festive. The service is attentive and warm. The cuisine (yes, cuisine) was incredible Tlhe prices, for this level and quality, were just right and worth every penny. Bottom line: We cannot wait to go back which we will be doing on Cinco de Mayo!! By the way, they also...
Read moreCame here for LI restaurant week on a Friday night for dinner. Cute little Mexican place packed with tons of color and with a smell of mezcal right as you walk in. The place is on the smaller side so I would recommend a reservation especially for a bigger party. Music was a bit loud in my opinion and made it a little hard to converse and even hear the wait staff. Otherwise service was good. All tables are served with complimentary chips and salsa.
I started with the chicken buñuelos, which was alright, good mole sauce but could have been a bit warmer. For the main, I got the three taco sampler, which I appreciated being able to choose any of the three from their diverse menu. I went with the chorizo, birria, and carnitas. Birria was far and away the best, with the chorizo surprisingly being my least favorite, was a bit dry in my opinion. The two best parts of the meal were the dessert and cocktails though. To drink I had the Paloma Aventurera (with tequila) which was tart and refreshing with a delicious poblano salt rim that came in a very cute vase like cup. And for dessert we got the tres leches and the coffee flan, both of which were exceptional, but I will say the cake was a little denser than typical so a purist might have some qualms.
Although I enjoyed the meal, without the deal for restaurant week, prices seem a little on the high side for what you get, and I'd be a little reluctant to come back too frequently. But, I would like to try more of their menu still. Everything was "good" but didn't quite get all the way to "great".
Parking can be a little crazy around patchogue. You can take your chances parking on the street, but I'd seek out one of the nearby municipal lots and walking a block or two to ease your...
Read moreThis is honestly one of our favorite places on Long Island. It is genuinely difficult to find food that is fresh and seasoned well, and that feels like it's worth the amount you are charged, but Ruta Oaxaca ensures that you are happy on both fronts. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the waitstaff is highly attentive and kind. Their cocktails (primarily inventive and classic margaritas) are really amazing, and they serve them all with fresh ingredients and in very nice glasses (my wife's favorite, the Guelaguetza, comes in a really cool glazed clay cup).
But the real winner here is the food. They of course have classic Mexican food staples we are accustomed to, like tacos and enchiladas, which are both fantastic (their mole sauce is especially wonderful), but their Oaxacan entrees are truly incredible. My favorite is the Pechuga and Mole Verde, which is a chicken breast served with the bone still in place (which is how you keep it juicy!), over a bed of green mole sauce, beans, pumkin seed, and amazing seasonings. It is all served with a beautiful presentation that clearly shows the chefs take real pride in their cooking. This is honestly the case with every dish we have had there - everything is beautifully presented.
In addition to all of the above, the head chef or owner (depending on the evening) constantly walk around to see how things are running, and always check with diners to ensure they've had a good experience.
This is a place we keep coming back to for dinner (and brunch on the weekends!) because honestly almost nothing tops it for us. Do yourself a favor, and get down to Patchogue (or Astoria) and...
