We came here to try something interesting and this place did not disappoint. I opted to get an outdoor reservation, and I'm glad that I did. After we arrived, the restaurant was quickly filling up. The staff greeted us as we entered and they were very welcoming and seated us quickly.
We started off with some Pellegrino, chips and guacamole, and ceviche. Normally I don't like ceviche but I wanted to try it and it was actually very good. I'm not sure what kind of meat was in it, but it doesn't matter because it was absolutely succulent. The guacamole was fantastic as well, and the fresh fried chips were to die for. Our appetizers were accompanied by a spicy margarita and tamarind margarita, both of which were some of the best margaritas I've ever had. Beware, the spicy one is actually spicy and I absolutely loved it. We got a second set of margaritas, but the second one I ordered had mezcal in it, which was equally as delicious.
For the entrees, my date got the Carne Asada medium rare, and I got two pairs of tacos; The Carnitas and the Oyster tacos. The presentation of all three dishes made us even hungrier. The carne asada was perfectly cooked, and perfectly portioned. The chimichurri and avocado went very well with the steak, and the side of rice beans and maduros complemented it so well. The tacos are a bit on the smaller side, similar to street tacos. The saving grace is that they're packed with so much meat that you don't even notice the smaller tortilla size. The carnitas was easily the favorite of the two for us. Whatever sauce is served on the side with it makes it taste a thousand times better, and that's not saying that they're not good without it. Either way you can't go wrong with them. The oyster tacos on the other hand weren't a favorite of ours. It tasted a little too fishy for us, which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing. I think it's for someone who wants that flavor, which neither of us particularly did but I enjoyed it anyway. Overall the food was spectacular, and even though the oyster tacos weren't our favorite, they were still good overall.
The service here was excellent and quick. As stated prior, they had a good amount of people inside the restaurant yet we didn't have to wait long for food or for a waiter to check in on us. We did sit outside, so I can't comment too much about the interior and how clean it was. From the quick glance that we got from the entrance, the restaurant seemed very well maintained and cozy.
Overall, this restaurant was a fantastic find. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to try a different take on Mexican food in a cozy romantic atmosphere. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because of the oyster tacos. Again, they weren't terrible by any means, but not what we were expecting flavor wise. I recommend making a reservation sense they're easier enough to make and it would guarantee you a seat. I forgot to mention that parking here is pretty easy as there is a garage right across the street, but you may get lucky finding parking in front of the entrance. Nonetheless, if you're thinking about trying this restaurant definitely give it a go. We will definitely...
Read moreFirst off, who doesn't love tacos??? I personally think they are a far better invention than sliced bread, and growing up in California, I probably did have more tortillas in my belly than bread. La Casa Bronxville is a good place to go when craving Mexican food, and wanting something more elevated than your standard Mexican food joint. Off-white coffered ceilings, sea-foam colored walls and woven straw basket encased light fixtures create a breezy, chic beach vibe. We ordered chips and salsa. I didn't mind paying the $16 price tag for a small container of chips with 3 small containers of salsa. The salsas were quite good, one was sweet, the yellow one was spicy, but not so much that it was painful, and the green was the perfect goldilocks combo of flavor and spice. I think paying for a fixed amount of tortilla chips also helps one (i.e. me) avoid filling up on tortilla chips before the main meal arrives. What I did mind, however, was that it took about 20 minutes for our chips and salsa to arrive, and the larger party next to us that arrived after us, received theirs first.
The drinks were also good. The mezcal margarita was a great balance of smoky Mezcal blanco, agave and lime juice. The clarified milk punch was smooth, sweet and although clear, somehow had the mouth-feel of milk. I would've tried more of their cocktails, but I waited about 15-20 minutes with an empty glass before a waiter stopped by the table to ask if I wanted another cocktail. After the long waits for service, I didn't feel like waiting around for another drink. But I digress, what are we here for? TACOS! The tacos did deliver. The carnitas, chorizo and suadero were delicious. Extremely flavorful, tender meat seasoned with the perfect blend of spices. The type of execution that makes you put the taco down, sit back and close your eyes so you can focus on and appreciate each bite. I also ordered the steak quesadilla. They did not skimp on the oaxaca cheese nor the ton of steak jam packed between the perfectly pan fried tortillas with just a touch of crunch. Delicious!
Would I go back? Well, this was my second visit and the service was even more lack-luster the previous time. At least there's been some improvement in that department, but it does give me pause. I'd probably give it one more go with the hope that the service would be on par with the caliber of delicious food...
Read moreThis place tries to pass itself off as an authentic Mexican restaurant, but it's really just an Americanized version that misses the mark. The food is simply not up to par, and there's no reason to come here solely for the cuisine. This is more of a spot to party and have drinks with friends, thanks to their cute bar and all-you-can-drink brunch deals. The ambiance is casual and inoffensive, but that's about the only positive thing going for it.
Food: The guacamole, priced at an outrageous $17, was a complete letdown. The portion size was laughably tiny, amounting to maybe 2-3 tablespoons of guac, despite coming with plenty of chips. And the taste? Plain and underwhelming – you could easily make better guacamole at home.
The salmon dish was a disaster. The fish was overcooked to the point of being dry and tasteless, as if they forgot to season it with even a pinch of salt. The "mango sauce" was a joke – just a tablespoon or two of diced mango on the side, which made for an odd and unappetizing combination. The steamed asparagus seemed like an afterthought, as if they were trying to pass this off as a "healthy" dish. But who goes to a Mexican restaurant for steamed veggies?
Another dish, some kind of chicken concoction (I've already forgotten the name, that's how unmemorable it was), was heavy on the corn and, once again, painfully bland.
For the prices they charge, the food quality is simply not worth it.
This place might be worth a visit if you're solely interested in knocking back cocktails and alcohol with a group of friends and have no expectations for the food. But if you're looking for authentic, flavorful Mexican cuisine, you'd be better off going elsewhere.
The service was OK. Our waitress was friendly enough, but she managed to forget to put in one of our orders, forcing us to wait an unreasonable amount of time for that dish to arrive. She was young and apologetic, so we overall were OK with her service anyway.
In summary, unless you're solely interested in the drinks and party atmosphere, there's no compelling reason to dine at this subpar Mexican establishment.
The food is overpriced, underwhelming, and lacks the vibrant flavors you'd expect from true Mexican cuisine. Save your money and your taste buds the...
