Plenty of other bars in Huntington - don’t spend your money here and certainly don’t host an event here. Not a review-giver but it should be public knowledge that the owner Andrew Crabtree is a low life who schemed a wedding afterparty, was purposefully misleading and dishonest with information such as the availability of space within the bar, and disparaged the family to boot. Awful experience that was fully avoidable at the hands of a better person as the Owner.
Updated to include responses to inaccuracies from manager comment
I had multiple conversations with owner & manager in weeks and months leading to event and a minimum spend on a bar tab was mutually agreed to. At no point was I asked to sign a contract or provide a deposit, would have been happy to do so had I known that the restaurant would not honor their side of the agreement (shame on me for trusting the owners words I guess).
I only learned from owner in conversation #2 that we would not have the small bar as private. I was not provided a price to rent out the space. However we discussed and the Owner's exact words were that "by the time that your party arrives there should only be a few people left at the bar and you should have the majority of the place to yourselves." This couldn't have been further from the truth when the party arrived at the previously discussed time and the restaurant was nearly full. The Owner asked for multiple confirmations on the timing and party size so that he could staff accordingly, further confirming that they would have space available for us. He even mentioned having additional waitresses available if the bar was tied up (also was not the case).
At no point did I ask to have other guests removed from the bar. I pointed out 1 person sitting at a table in the middle of 2 other empty tables and asked if they could be moved to create more space, and noted that the Owner sat a new table of people (seemingly his friends) instead of creating more space for the party.
The conversation grew more angry as I was trying to point out the inaccuracies in the information delivered to me on our phone calls and was meeting a stonewall. Having agreed to a set minimum, the expectation existed that there would at least be adequate space available within the bar to accommodate. This was not the case when we arrived (at the exact time that we had discussed, the Owner also tried to tell me that I was 30 minutes late which was never the truth as we both know). He then also said that he could no longer guarantee that the bar tab would be kept to wedding guests only, something that we discussed multiple times over the phone as well.
The minimum was not met because a large portion of the party left within the first 30 minutes since they did not have enough space, or else there would have been no problem meeting the minimum. I'm also aware of other wedding guests spending on their own cards as well which wasn't supposed to be the case until the minimum had been met.
Also happy to review footage of mine and my family's alleged behavior, there was no issue there and at no point was the Owner "accosted." If we do so, we will also find the Owner yelling at the bride that we could all leave causing her to cry outside, before coming back inside later on. His behavior was childish in the way that he wouldn't speak to me or my mother after being called out for his dishonesty, and used the manager as an intermediary shield (which seemingly continues).
Would like to point out that the manager was great and did everything she could to aid in a really bad situation. That being said, there is plenty more that the bar could have done in advance to help avoid this when they knew that our party was arriving and to hold up their end of the agreement and conversations that were had. They could have simply said that they cannot accommodate the party in any of the lead-in conversations if they were not willing to do so and this would have been avoided. Instead, the experience left a stain on the wedding evening for myself...
Read moreAt first glance, this restaurant was warm and inviting. The decor was great, and you can't beat the location, 2nd floor overlooking the corner of Main Street and Route 110. Very nice! The food was pretty good and reasonably priced. I had the Chicken Wings, breaded and fried. They were fresh and tasty, much better than the frozen/fried version you get at some places. Our server was polite and professional, though not particularly friendly. Crabtree would have been our regular meeting place when in Huntington, and I would have given them 5 stars had it not been for the owner's attitude.
We were meeting friends, but we got there before them. Since no one greeted us at the door, we grabbed a small table in the bar area. When the server came over, I mentioned that we were going to need a bigger table when the rest of our party arrived. She asked how many were going to be, and I said anywhere from 5-8 altogether. She said rather bluntly, "I'll speak with the owner." He came over and told us it's "first come, first serve" and told us we couldn't move. We hadn't even ordered our food yet.
A few minutes later our friends arrived and were seated at a table for 4. Since there were only 3 of them, I asked if we could join them. There was plenty of room at their table and we didn't mind squeezing in; we would have been 5 people. Once again we were told, rather sternly this time, "No. I already told you, it's first come, first serve. You have to stay here". This made no sense since we weren't going to consume any additional seats, rather we would free up a two-top at the bar, which at that point was getting rather crowded.
As we were leaving, I briefly sat at the table with my friends to say hello. I made eye contact with the owner and smiled at him, and he right came over. I explained to him, "This was all I was asking for, to join my friends at this table." He then told me that the server said I "threatened" to leave a review on Yelp, which is true. I stated to her that I was going to leave an "honest and accurate" review about our experience. But rather than trying to defuse the issue with a customer, the owner continued to argue with me and use the word "threaten". Finally, someone at the table said to him, "This is pointless, and we're all leaving.
Because the food was good and the atmosphere was pleasant, even with the owner's bad attitude, I would have given Crabtree a 2 Star review. But then, I was taken aback when he stood about 10 feet away and took my picture! This creeped out everyone at the table. In several decades of going out to hundreds of restaurants of all different levels of cuisine and price, I've never met such an obtuse and abrasive owner.
Bottom line is this; Crabtree is a pretty nice place with decent food, but the angry, creepy owner making guests feel uncomfortable makes it impossible to ever go back. There are dozens of bar/restaurants in Huntington who value your business and treat you...
