I had been meaning to try Sharkie’s for some time now, but parking in Woodstock has always intimidated me. This day was different. Having already played hooky in order to deepen my suntan, I was feeling daring. On top of that, I had pushed the limits of my complexion for hours without so much as a snack, so I was feeling terribly hungry.
When I walked into the meatball shop, I was showered with smiles. I immediately felt at home (a lot of people actually think I’m Italian). I ordered my sandwich and then perused the pantry section while I waited. Wow! I don’t know who is in charge of curating Sharkie’s snack selection, but they are on the cutting edge of potato chip market research. I snagged a few bags, along with some freshly canned local beers.
There was plenty of seating inside by the time my sandwich was ready, but it was such a beautiful day. Not only that, but I prefer not to eat indoors when I am sweaty (in part because I prefer that others do not, and I abide by the Golden Rule). I took my food to go and headed out onto the sunny street, but there were tourists on the one bench in sight. I kicked them off so that I could enjoy my birthright and my meatball sub while continuing my tan. Yum.

Read moreThis establishment displayed outright racial discrimination toward me. After entering eager to try the food, I politely explained to the young woman named Autumn, at the front that I had just had a tooth pulled. She kindly helped me select my order, which I paid for in full. While waiting for my friend’s order, I sat down to TRY to take a small bite at the counter. Almost immediately, a male employee named Trevor, rudely ordered me not to eat there. I complied and repacked my food to go. Seconds later, that same employee openly served two white women seated less than three feet from the very spot where I had been told to move.
As an African American paying customer, I was singled out and humiliated — treatment that was blatantly racist, discriminatory, and indefensible. This wasn’t a misunderstanding; it was a clear double standard based solely on race. No person should ever experience such conduct in any place of business. I strongly urge the public to hold this establishment accountable and reconsider supporting it until meaningful action is taken against this kind...
Read moreExtremely rude staff. Came here for a quick to go bite, was told we could sit at the bar, as all the tables were full, and eat quickly. A women with short white hair came out and IN FRONT of me and my boyfriend spoke to the cashier asking if we had been helped. He said yes and that we would quickly be eating at the counter despite buying to go. She loudly, again in front of us without properly addressing us, said “NO they cannot” and vigorously shook her head no. She then pulled the worker to the side to explain to him that we had to leave since our “tab was closed” aka wouldn’t be tipping, even though we planned on eating our 2 meatballs and leaving quickly as we had family waiting outside. Before we got our order she came out again and asked the worker if he had told us we had to leave and when he said yes, she said good. If I were to give some advice, don’t talk about your customers in front of them without addressing them. If they had a product that was so good and so popular we couldn’t use 10 mins of counter space, maybe i’d understand, but their...
