Had a taste for some oxtail and didn't want to drive to Albany, so I googled an found this place 6mins from my house. I ordered a small oxtail dinner with rice and peas, Cabbage and plantains. I get home sit down to eat, not only did I find a piece of plastic wrap in my food, there is not one single pea in my rice and the plantains are not cooked properly. In addition to that, the smell of the food leaves little to be desired. Lastly, the slice of lemon cake is horribly dry.

I've been to First Choice on and off over the years, mainly because I don't live in Troy. Despite that, I can't recall ever being disappointed with the food. The owner was kind and pleasant as always. The chicken was delicious and flavorful. The plantains were nice and sweet. The cabbage was okay and the rice was bland. Because I usually love the food I will try again in the future. I'm hoping that yesterday was just an off day for them.

I come here for ricky, And I stay for the food! Very casual environment. I always feel satisfied after eating here, as if my body is thanking me. The rice, callaloo, cabbage, plantains, and chickpeas compliment each other. What a nourishing meal. They have scotch bonnet sauce in case you like it spicy

I tried their lunch buffet, which doesn't offer much variety. You get chicken in three flavors stewed ( brown chicken), Curry and Jerk. In addition to a choice of white rice or rice with peas. The flavors are okay , but the sauce for the jerk and curry are watery, with an almost soup like consistency.

As it relates to spice, the spice levels increase from stew ( mild) , Curry (medium) to Jerk ( spicy) . The environment is not really convenient for a buffet as the drinks aren't include and you don't have a server, but after awhile you will understand you can go behind the counter to the cooler, which isn't immediately apparent . There is no wait staff , it's do it your self service.

What to expect, it's a friendly and welcoming environment but you have to ask for what you need if you want something on the menu or not available in the buffet. Even when you ask , service will not be prompt.

I also wouldn't categorize this as authentic Jamaican food but I only tried the buffet, recently . I am hoping for a better experience with the more traditional dishes like Curry Goat or Ox Tails.

I would go back, it's a typical laid back Caribbean environment with friendly folks , lots of reggae music and regulars...

I was in the mood for some authentic Jamaica food but didn't want to travel to Albany that day so I decided to do a search to see if anything was close by. I found this place and decide to check it out because a couple of the review says food was good, not realizing it was from years ago until after. I order Rice n Peas w/Jerk Chicken, Plaintains & Cabbage and a cup of Pumpkin soup. It was beautiful day so I decided to go to the park to enjoy this food. Let me tell you, I am Jamaican and have been to many of Jamaican Restaurants, but this by far the worse one. The Rice n Peas was par-boil rice with absolutely no flavor, no seasoning, minimal peas, jerk chicken was nasty and Cabbage tasted like it was cooked days ago. I would not recommend this place unless you are not real Jamaican and doesn't know what authentic taste like. I wasted my time and money had to order something else from that India Restaurant right next door to clean my pallet. Once bitten,...
