We were visiting Lake Tahoe this weekend. Though we were in the mountains, We did feel like trying out sushi. The concierge did recommend Maki Ali, we did try their food. For Truckee this was ok sushi. The poke bowl was decent, but we have had way better sushi rolls. However, they do have an attitude problem and a customer service problem. I cannot assume what it stems from, I will trust you to make your own decision based on what transpired. My wife called in to order at quarter after 5 for dinner, They stated that they can only take orders for pickup at 7.50 and that she had to pay by credit card to even place the order. My mistake, I thought dinner cant be that late and went to pick up at 6.50. They clearly were not complete with the order. Given Covid times, It was pick up only. I waited outside for over two minutes until someone came out to check why I was there. Then checking on the order time, she came out and said I was an hour early for the order. Since, I had to drive 25 minutes from squaw valley to come there, I requested if i can pick it up and was sorry as it was my mistake and that i thought it was 6.50 pickup. She initially said, I will see if I can get your order in but for some reason changed her mind and said I had to come at 7.50. I had nothing much to do in that complex so went back and returned at 7.50. The order was ready and I picked it up, They wanted me to sign the credit card. No receipt was given. It asked for a tip and i did add something. I expected the receipt to be in the bag. It was not there and i had started the drive back. The total that i signed for seemed higher than what i expected so i checked with my wife why it was so. She called to check the itemized list and was surprised that for a take out order there was an automatic tip added, the California rolls had an additional charge of $4 each as the crab meet requested was real and not imitation. Neither of these were mentioned when the order was placed. No total tab was mentioned when the order was placed. No receipt was given for one to check what the order total was. When asked about it, she indicated, she was sorry to have not mentioned that the real crab meet added to the receipt but was indicating the additional tip automatically charged was for the sushi chefs and was indicated in their web site. I have pictures of their website content that clearly indicates it was not mentioned at that time. Even if it were should it not have been mentioned or a receipt provided so the breakdown is obvious and clear for consumers. If the charge was being made on the phone why was the total not mentioned right then. In summary. I believe, there are few options for Sushi in Truckee and their attitude seems to be we do not care about...

Warning: this place is highly UNETHICAL & charges a tip on the phone for to go order, does not tell you and does not provide a receipt. I wouldn’t have discovered if not for the reviews.

Food: Might be the most appalling “sushi” I’ve ever had in my life, horribly over priced for sushi that shouldn’t even be called sushi. It looks like someone who saw a picture of a sushi online and decided to cobble something together for fun. And If I were Japanese I’d have flipped in my grave. It’s not even American sushi. I don’t know what kind of joke is this to have like gas station quality sushi but actual sushi restaurant prices. I paid $120 for something that should’ve been $40 at best.

The chirashi don is a joke.

The only thing that tasted okay was the SALAD. I think this place should stop selling sushi and just focus on selling salad.

Honestly, anyone who thinks this is “sushi” either never had sushi in their life or were paid to write positive reviews. There is NO WAY there are people out there happy paying $16 for sushi that looks like your 5 year old made it for fun.

On top of it, they appeared to have TAKEN A TIP AUTOMATICALLY For TAKEOUT WITHOUT INFORMING ME OR SHOWING US A RECEIPT. That is just outrageous and...

The utter stomach churning experience I derived from this godforsaken sushi restaurant was immeasurable. To start, the food quality was beyond revolting. Our main courses included a Chirashi bowl, a rainbow roll, as well as a spicy tuna roll. The Chirashi was completely flavorless with no flair to its appearance. When biting into a piece of sashimi one should experience freshness and a feeling of satisfaction. However, I only felt like I had eaten a tuna-shaped lump of nothingness as I bit into the sashimi. Furthermore, both rolls' main source of protein was the imitation crab, or so they say. I don't know how they pulled off such a feat, but the crab tasted like string cheese with no real purpose in the dish. Overall, the food was bland, unremarkable, and an insult to all Japanese cuisine. I don't have much to say for the service and atmosphere other than being ordinary since I had ordered my food for pick-up. Though I do have something to say about their outrageous pricing for their terrible food. To be more specific, I ordered the three main dishes , 4 tamagos, and 4 ikuras. The total pricing came up to $157. I am speechless. Go to Drunken Monkey if you're in the area of Truckee. That is all I...

TL;DR: for the love of God, order somewhere else. We ordered chirashi dons, several sushi rolls, and a salad. The rice in all dishes was dry and stale. None of the fish felt remotely fresh, and the octopus in the chirashi was rubbery and unchewable. We never found that unagi in the dragon roll. Damn, even the miso soup tasted below average. The salad was actually okay. I don't know if they recently changed the chef, because majority of the older reviews are raving - but today's order was Safeway sushi quality, at 10x the price. As a bonus, see the picture for the condition of one of the rolls they handed us. On top of all this, they stealthily add a 10% tip to the takeouts by default, without letting you know when you order on the phone, and present a receipt with that amount already printed in. Shady business.

Cute little spot with some vegan options. Overall, vegan sushi tasted okay, main ingredients are cucumber, avocado, carrots, one of the rolls with tempura zucchini, another with tofu — nothing special, can make them at home. Nice ambiance, friendly staff! I ordered “Secret garden” and “Sunflower”. The secret garden rolls were small and very thin sliced, also they put it on the same plate with fish sashimi another person ordered. I’m also pregnant and didn’t want any cross contamination (raw fish is dangerous for pregnant woman/fetus) so I went and asked not to put the next rolls with raw fish. The Sunflower rolls portion was bigger. We were in the area with friends and this place was near by. Thank you for being inclusive and offering plant-based options.
