Went on a Wednesday evening at about 6:15. The restaurant decor is charming. Our meal was prepared at our table by Chef George. The food was good. I will recommend the shrimp and chicken. Chef George was nice and pleasant. Now the reason for only one star. The meal for myself and 2 children was $100. That would have been fine except for the fact that we were sat a table with a couple with a toddler, who began screaming at the top of its lungs as soon as the chef came to the table, and did not quit until after the parents had finished their meal and left. The staff did not seem to mind that we were forced to endure the screaming baby in what was supposed to be a special celebration dinner for us. The chef was not able to do any show, because every time he moved the baby yelled even louder. To top things off when I was eating the rice, I found a long blond hair in the rice. When I informed my waitress of the hair she shrugged her shoulders and said its not mine I assure you. Both my boys have short marine haircuts. I just finished chemo and have no hair of my own. Her callousness and unconcern just ruined what was already a rough meal. There was no fun, no pleasure, no laughing, only crying screaming baby with parents that would not take her out of the restaurant and be courteous to the other people sitting at the same table. Staff did nothing. Our waitress only walked by and shook her head. I asked to speak to the manager/owner. He did come to listen, and his only reply was sorry you didn't have a good night. He could honestly have cared less. He had his money nothing else mattered. My suggestion is don't go to Shoguns if you want to have a nice time. Choose the other Hibachi restaurant in Tyler. But I will say this, as soon as the Chef George walked away from table the waitress was serving fortune cookies and to go boxes. RUSH RUSH RUSH!!!!! HOrrible experience and will never go back. Wonder how the health department will feel about food being served with...
Read moreWe had a decent experience at Shogun overall. One of the nice surprises was that they were able to seat us about 15 minutes before our reservation, which was a pleasant start to the evening.
The atmosphere was fun and lively—most of the guests seemed to be enjoying themselves, which helped set a good tone. The place itself felt a little worn and could use some sprucing up, but it still had a certain charm, especially the walkway leading into the restaurant, which I really liked.
Our hibachi chef, unfortunately, seemed a bit tired or maybe even burnt out. While I understand that doing multiple shows a day can get repetitive, the performance felt a bit resentful or disengaged, which made things a little awkward at times. On the flip side, we had great conversations with the other people seated around us, which helped balance that out.
As for the food—some hits and some misses. The steak was cooked beautifully and the fried rice was absolutely delicious; I could’ve easily eaten a whole plate of just that. My spouse’s chicken was unfortunately a bit too salty. I did enjoy the scallops, though they were topped with a sauce I wasn’t a fan of—would’ve appreciated the option to have it on the side. The vegetables didn’t really work for me either—potatoes and apples together threw the flavor off.
One thing I really missed was a classic yum yum sauce. Instead, they offered a sesame ginger-type sauce that just didn’t pair well with the dishes for my taste.
The wait staff, though, were excellent—super friendly and accommodating throughout. Big kudos to them.
The biggest drawback was the parking—there basically isn’t any. Be prepared to circle around or park a bit of a distance away.
All in all, Shogun had its bright spots and some areas that could use improvement. If you're going for the fun hibachi experience with friends or family, it’s still worth a visit—but maybe temper...
Read moreUpdate August 2025. Wife and I have been coming here for years. We are still coming here. Never a miss. Always a familiar face. Entire staff is upbeat and knowledgeable. Sushi and hibachi are consistently good as the crew remains consistent overall and the recipes and presentation are strong. Bartender Mona has moved on, but now Raquel and Jacob sling tip top mixed drinks and draft or bottled beers. Stop in for Sunday Fun Day and say hello to Jacob at the bar top.
Ok. I’m 51, and my wife is 43. Both born and raised in Tyler. Discovered the Shogun happy hour maybe 7-8 years ago. Did hibachi here maybe 2-3 times a month, and visited probably 8-10 times a month just for drinks and some fried rice. We moved to North Dallas about 3 years ago...did Benihana and a few others...honestly DID find solid drinks at Kobe Steaks on Beltline in Addison...but nothing else worth mention. Long story short, we moved back to Tyler two weeks ago. We went to this Shogun a few days after returning...we found head chef David was still here, and Mona is still managing the bar. I challenge anybody to find a better value that the $4 LIT and/or $2 fried rice w/ ginger sauce (happy hour pricing). We will...once again...make Shogun’s our #1 stop for THE best ginger sauce (never did find anything worth a damn in Dallas) and 4-6 M-F happy...
