I had high hopes for the new Mexican Dennys, but my visit was a complete disappointment. While I understand opening week comes with hiccups, the disorganization, long waits, and outright deception were beyond excusable.
Service: Lackadaisical, Uninformed, and Dishonest
My friend and I were seated quickly, but then waited 15 minutes before our waitress, Mariah, even greeted us. She brought waters and chips, which was the only redeeming moment.
We ordered the table-side guac and birria rolls, only to be told they didn’t have a cart yet. No big deal—we just wanted guac. Since we had so much time to wait, we placed our full order: I got the carne asada, and my friend ordered the Pina Loca.
Mariah struggled with the ordering system, delaying our food. 10 minutes later, someone dropped off the birria rolls and a tiny portion of guac—far from the usual table-side serving. When we asked Mariah, she admitted it was wrong and took it back.
Enter Edwin, the manager, who brought the correct portion, explaining they were out of molcajetes due to “too many dishes.” At least he acknowledged the mistake, unlike Mariah.
Then came the real waiting game—another 30 minutes before our entrées arrived. During that time, a random server tried to drop off tacos we never ordered.
When the food finally came, my carne asada was lukewarm, while my friend’s Pina Loca was sizzling. At that point, I was starving, so I ate it, but the lack of quality control was glaring.
We decided to try dessert—huge mistake. My friend ordered churros, and I ordered chocolate cake. Instead, I got a vanilla cake with caramel sauce and blueberry filling.
I flagged Mariah down: “Hey, sorry, I ordered the chocolate cake—this isn’t chocolate.”
She casually replied, “Yeah, that is the chocolate cake here.”
Excuse me, what?
I asked how that made sense, and she just shrugged, “Yeah, it’s weird here.”
I pointed out the fruit, and she admitted, “Oh yeah, that comes with it. I was supposed to serve it with a scoop of fruit.”
At this point, I was done. I Googled Plaza Azteca’s chocolate cake—and guess what? It was actually chocolate. The menu even described it as ‘warm chocolate cake’—what I got was cold and soggy.
Before leaving, I asked Mariah one last time: “Are you sure this is chocolate cake?”
She doubled down: “Yeah, that’s the chocolate cake here.”
I pointed to the menu: “The menu says ‘warm chocolate cake’—this is cold.”
Her response? “Well, the menu is wrong, then.”
At this point, I was visibly annoyed and just paid my bill.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Waste Your Time
The audacity of trying to convince me that tres leches cake is chocolate cake is what killed this experience. I am second generation Mexican and very familiar with the cuisine—there was no excuse for this level of dishonesty.
Mariah had multiple chances to admit a mistake or be upfront. Instead, she tried to gaslight me into thinking milk-soaked vanilla cake was chocolate.
Final Verdict
❌ Long wait times ❌ Lukewarm food ❌ Server didn’t know the menu ❌ Wrong orders being delivered ❌ Gaslighting over dessert
I will never return.
Final Rating: 3/10 – only because it was opening week,...
Read moreWas very much looking forward to our visit. Unfortunately, we left disappointed. Went Sunday afternoon at an off peak hour. After being seated it took a full 10 minutes before our server arrived. We placed an order for both our drinks and food at the same time. Shortly after, our server brought waters and mentioned the bartender being busy. Then someone delivered our food and we still did not receive our drinks yet. I was really looking forward to having a frozen daiquiri pre dinner. The ones at the Plymouth Meeting location are outstanding. When it finally did arrive, the frozen daiquiri was not very frozen and was in an odd choice of glass. A short almost juice type glass. I also noticed a $1.00 up charge on the receipt in addition to the $12.00 for it being a “strawberry” daiquiri. That seemed odd. The food was average, nothing bad but nothing outstanding. Although my husband did say he enjoyed the Carnitas dinner. The temperature inside was a little stuffy and I’m usually always someone who is cold. I realize it is the first week and grand opening weekend. However, I would also expect saying that, that the restaurant would be over staffed if anything. Service and wait times along with the drink service were the real downers. Hopefully the kinks get worked out and they find their groove. For now though I would travel to...
Read moreCompared to KoP Plaza Azteca this was VERY underwhelming everything was different from the KoP Azteca including food (especially the chips, tortillas, salsa, and chori pollo), and service was abysmal, spent a long time waiting for food or even the waiter to bring drinks or any service at all. We asked for cheese dip and it never even got to the table before food was ready and we asked about it and still never got it so we told them we didn’t need it anymore so she continued to yell in Spanish at the guy delivering our main food items right in front of us. We sat at a table that had a view into the area where they get your drinks from and saw the waitress on her phone after we asked for refills and sat there looking into the area at her for a good 5 minutes before she came and gave us our drinks and had a attitude most of the time. Food was bland dry and disproportionate compared to KoP for a larger pricing but overall devote was nice and modern with plenty of space albeit with really loud music. If you want good Mexican food go to KoP Plaza Azteca where the food is better, better service, and nicely decorated. Waited a long time for this closer Plaza Azteca but it was quite disappointing and pretty much just uses the Plaza Azteca name with nothing being like other experiences I’ve had with...
