We visited this restaurant on the first week they opened and it was over all a good experience. Since it was the first week staff seemed to be still getting trained on menu items but over all a good experience so we wanted to come back and try some other menu items. Today was a completely different story and my wife and I were completely disappointed.
We came in for an early dinner around 4pm. The restaurant had a few tables dining so it wasnt busy in the slightest. We sat in the top honey comb area and could see the whole dining experience unfold. First server to greet us was Angel. We knew what items we wanted and proceeded to give her our order. First time we dined we ordered the combo B and was told that we can choose any of the ramen dishes if we didnt want the preset items listed on the menu. My wife wanted to substitute braised pork instead of the pork chashu and the server said that she was having a hard time following and putting in the order of what we wanted. She "took the order" and then went to the host stand.
Second "server" came and told us that we can't substitute the ramen dish on the combo and it has to be that menu items listed. When we asked what changed, she said because its a new restaurant and corporate was seeing what worked and now they are instructed they can't do that. We then order individually what we wanted and asked for waters, no teas. We later find out this was the FOH manager Melanie. She put in our order and never came back. Not even with waters. And that's when the vibe changed. Our original server never came back, we had to push the call button to get our waters even after the omurice was served and chicken katsu. That was when the 3rd server came to drop waters off. Never again to see her either. Food came we had our meal and we could see there was more staff than customers and we can see they are talking about us. 4th server comes to finally check on us and I asked for more water and to see the manager. That's when Melanie came. I was surprised she was the manager. I calmly let her know how disappointed we were with the complete lack of service, the menu knowledge and the overall way we were treated. She didnt do anything to really make this a better experience even when we said we wouldn't come back. We asked for the check and the 4th server came to drop it off.
I was in the service industry for around 17 years. I ran restaurants in Chicago and helped open new concepts. I was a general manager and a beverage director. I've also opened up roti Mediterranean and Kumas Korner in Vernon hills a while back. I know this area quite well and have trained many staff in buisness and hospitality. I no longer am in the service industry but as I told your manager that her staff needs to be trained and have better respect to the customers. After we spoke to her we can see staff talking about us and pointing and laughing. Way to many staff and food runners and no accountability, just highschool vibes with attitude and treatment. More talking than working. We weren't even looking to get a discount because it wasnt about the money but she did nothing to make us ever want to come back.
Food is good BOH keep doing a good job! Tea bar is great but we wont be dining here ever again and I hope other guests never get...
Read moreKyuramen just opened in Vernon Hills and I have to say, I love the decor--especially the honeycomb seating area, it's such a fun touch! There are also a couple photo op places at the waiting area. The menu has tons of ramen choices to pick from, which is great if you like variety. Even vegetarian.
We tried the brown sugar bubble milk tea and passionfruit tea. Both were tasty, but I'd definitely recommend adjusting the sweetness level--I asked for 50% sugar and it was still very sweet.
For appetizers, the yakitori platter and takoyaki (octopus balls) were excellent. Both were flavorful, fresh, and definitely something I'd order again.
I went with the Omurice combo with curry sauce and the Japanese cherry blossom jelly. The tonkatsu was well fried, though I felt it could use more seasoning. My main critique is the rice--they use Thai/Jasmine rice, which doesn't pair as well with Omurice. Japanese rice would've made a big difference in flavor and texture.
On the ramen side, the Yingyang ramen and Tokyo Tonkotsu Shoyu ramen were both outstanding! Rich broth, full of flavor, and the noodles were cooked perfectly. A plus: most ramen dishes can be made non-spicy, which is great for more sensitive palates.
Service was wonderful--our waitress was so sweet and attentive. The restaurant wasn't busy at all during Wednesday lunch, which made for a really nice, relaxed dining experience.
Overall, a solid new addition to the area. I'd go back for the ramen and appetizers, and I'm looking forward to trying more...
Read moreThis place has great potential but horrible, uneducated and rude stuff will get this restaurant eventually closed. Food is pretty good however I agree with other comments that broth is too salty, chicken popcorn is amazing and their bubble teas are just wonderful. Ramen could be better, it comes only with 2 slices of meat. Place has great design and it's overall cute with beecomb sitting. But stuff.... sweet heavens, I have never met such an unprofessional stuff with manager included. We've been passed thru 4 servers, our original server didn't know menu and had a problem addressing our questions and request so she send manager who didn't even introduce herself. We asked for water and didn't get it until we asked again. We asked for refill, never got it. We also had to remind them to bring us our dessert. And on our 1st visit similar thing happen. We never got drinks that were coming with our combo meal. We never felt so unwelcome in restaurant and when we addressed our disappointment and dissatisfaction manager just stood there like she didn't want to be there. This restaurant looks like it's run by high-school students. They did absolutely nothing to make us come back there. Manager is lacking managing skills and is more interested in laughing at customers than actually training her stuff. Unfortunately we won't be going back and I want to worn anyone who goes there. Prepare yourself for decent food but absolute lack of...
