Kanpai Sushi — Restaurant in Virginia Beach

After moving here from CA and living here for about a month, I was really starting to crave good sushi. Decided to give Kanpai Sushi a try after reading all the great reviews, and because its basically around the corner from my house. The menu contains an impressive amount of both a la carte sushi and specialty rolls. I ordered the sweet shrimp (amaebi) sashimi, however they were out and offered to substitute some type of fresh shrimp (can't remember the exact name, but I think it starts with a P) instead. The shrimp was really fresh, and served topped with a bit of roe which really brought out the sweetness of the raw shrimp meat. They also served the fried head on the side which offered a nice contrast in texture and pleasant saltiness. I also had the VA beach roll which was tuna, crab and avocado, as well as the A-Z roll which was served fried, and topped with sriracha and masago. Both were also very fresh, and did not smell fishy at all. Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with this place and would highly recommend. It was just as bit as good, if not better, than the sushi places in SoCal. Next time I come here, I'm planning on trying the $45 dinner for two which contains two appetizers, specialty rolls and...

Absolutely loved the place. We t there every week for takeout because their Spicy tuna and spicy salmon are amazing. I ordered a spicy salmon and when I got home I noticed the spicy salmon was just a plain old salmon roll. Again I order the spicy salmon roll EVERY week so I know it very well. The lady on the phone when I called told me I was wrong and that if I want jt more spicy then I should ask for my spicy sauce on the side. This spicy salmon roll had NO spicy sauce whats so ever. It was incredibly rude on not professional and because of this I will not be back to the establishment which is sad. Highly disappointed

Update: I tried to give them another chance and tried to call in a takeout order at 1:45. They closed lunch at 230 so they were still open but they would pick up the phone and just hang up on me. They did this 10 times in a row. Super unprofessional and am officially done with this horrible place. Worst customer service I have...

I walked into this restaurant to order takeout... there was a party in front of me waiting to be seated, so I sat on the chair in the waiting space... two people walked in after me walked in front of me and were immediately seated... I waited for 5 minutes to see if anybody was going to come acknowledge me and watched the hostess three different times go serve somebody and look in my face... then I looked around the room and I noticed I was the only black person in the building I didn't want to think that that's what it was but I stood in the front and I called and asked them when they were going to come see me... she looked me dead in my face and said oh we're very busy and I told her but your host is just walked by me twice...she says we will help you soon as we can. So while I'm waiting to be helped I called the sushi restaurant around the corner and place my order and still have not had someone come up...
