For Fredericksburg, the place is pretty good, not what I'd seek out if craving soul food but likely one of the closest things you'll get in the area.
In depth: Food. Good taste. I do like that you get full wings and not wingettes. The wings are good and tender. The braised brisket was very tender, it was good but could use a touch of flavor (I'd order again). Mac and cheese is good for a restaurant but not your go to soul food if that makes sense. The green beans were good, I personally would like them cooked longer to avoid the teeth squeaking. Hope cakes were good, one was soggy due to placement under the food which was avoidable. Potato salad was the only thing I did not like at all. The potatos should be cooked a little longer so your teeth glide through, it has a sweet kick to it which is weird, the onions should be cut smaller to not overpower the bite flavor, and something is missing but not sure what (seasoning wise).
Service. The service was decent. The lady was very friendly and welcoming. As soon as I started asking questions, her voice turned to a whisper which was annoying. The menu says 1 piece next to the chicken put the description says 2. I asked which it was and she whispered "no just 1" and shook her head no. I proceeded to ask for 2 orders of chicken for my tray which she replied "so you want 4 pieces of chicken?" ?????????
Menu: Online ordering needs to be fixed. It lets you fully build the order then says they aren't accepting pickups (hour and a half before closing). Then online you can add fish as a protein whereas in store you cannot. The two premium items should be bolded or the note should be directly next to the item as I was surprised by my $30 bill after switching to brisket. Also very odd the smallest side you can order is 16 oz, wouldve been great to have an option to...
Read moreFirst, I must say the young lady at the cash register needs some customer service training because I was standing waiting to place my order for quite a while before even acknowledged - first impressions matter. When the gentleman, who was the owner, attempted to assist me I had to change my entire order because apparently ribs are not an everyday menu item. My advice is to put that info on the website then we could have decided to visit another time. He left after I had to see if my daughter still wanted to eat there because we both wanted ribs. The young lady finally came to the cash register, she then answered the phone, took an order, as if I had not been waiting 15-20 minutes to take my order. Since I was there I ordered fried chicken - here is the reason for a 2 star review (1 star goes to Delta Sigma Theta sorority) the greens were sweet and bland, the macaroni and cheese was just that - not soul food that I am used to macaroni and cheese, sweet tea tasted like it was mildewed; however, the wings were fried to perfection. I paid extra for macaroni and cheese and was given a tablespoon of it but a whole large container of âsweetâ greens that I had to trash. Now from reading other reviews, I notice the lack of attention and accountability from whomever is reading and responding. Thatâs ok. I drove all the way from Waldorf, Maryland for soul food, particularly, ribs and received mediocre food. I am allowed to voice my opinion. Now, I will probably try the restaurant one more time to determine if this was an off day or not. For today, the food was mediocre and the service was poor. Very clean place though and the Deltas had a good presentation while I was there (thatâs a star for...
Read moreWe stopped by here for brunch and it was a bit disappointing. The service confuses me, we were sat and had a waitress but she took a while to greet us. We both had coffees but had to get up to add sugar and cream, and you still pay at the counter. We had some questions/issues with our meal but she didn't check on us until we were practically done.
I had the cinnamon waffle, with a side of bacon and a side of fruit salad. The menu could use better descriptions, the waffle came with rosemary syrup which surprised me - I then realized it says that on the chicken and waffles but not the cinnamon one. My waffle also wasn't 100% prepared, like almost 1/4 of it was missing... The fruit salad was just diced watermelon and unfortunately I don't like watermelon so I ended up returning it. The bacon was crispy but I only got two slices for $6 which was a bit expensive in my opinion. There are no lids which was weird since the drinks are served in to-go cups. All the plate-ware and utensils are plastic but the food was kind of pricy which didn't make sense to me. My boyfriend got the shrimp and grits and it was like soup and bland, neither of us were impressed by it. I also have no idea how the restaurant is helping with food insecurity, we looked on their website and in the restaurant and there's no explanation as to how they're donating money to anyone. Overall we both agreed it just wasn't a great value, it might be a different experience for lunch but we won't be...
