I ordered takeout/delivery from here via DoorDash. Specifically the Fried rice that comes with egg, tomatoes, onions and scallions, along with sweet sticky rice and spring rolls. I was very specific in my order with the only “special instructions” being no tomatoes (or cucumbers if it came with that in it). I got a call from an unknown number on my phone that said it was from Illinois. I usually don’t answer unknown numbers unless they leave a voicemail. Luckily, the caller did leave a voicemail. It was a call from Siam Basil Thai Restaurant. After listening to the somewhat rude seeming voice mail, regarding confusion over my order and what I wanted in it (meat or tofu which neither should be in it), I called them back. The person who answered seemed either quite stressed, rushed or riled up about something. I politely informed them I received a call about my order and was returning that call when the woman started to speak to me very accusatorially. This is what she accusatorially asked/stated to me: What did I want in my order why didn’t I tell them specifically I needed to tell them specifically why didn’t I answer my phone when they called I should’ve answered my phone when they called because I didn’t answer my phone or inform them what I wanted in it, they cooked my order with meat or tofu so now they have to remake it I felt very overwhelmed and confused. I stated as calmly as I could that I am not sure what she means. My order didn’t come with meat or tofu to begin with so I was not aware nor did I think I needed to inform them of that. My order was the fried rice that came with egg, tomato, onions and scallions. Not anywhere was there any thing that stated it had meat or tofu. Also I was very clear in the “special instructions” section of “no tomatoes (or cucumbers if included in the dish”) so I don’t understand where the confusion came into play. I mean, it is simple math, no? If the order is fried rice (that comes with egg, tomato, onions and scallions) and the customer asks for no tomatoes (or cucumbers if it comes in it) that then what is made is fried rice with egg, onions and scallions. It is basically the same dish just minus one ingredient being the tomatoes. It cannot be that complicated and where does it or even I, say to add anything, let alone add meat or tufu? I had placed my order over an app with very clear instructions of what I wanted and payed for it already. I didn’t think I needed to do anything else other than wait for it to be delivered. This lady continued to retort with that I needed to inform her and because I didn’t she made the wrong dish and now had to remake it. I said again as politely as I could that I did not think nor did it say the dish had meat in it. Nor have I ever had to contact the restaurant specifically after placing an order via DoorDash as the app makes it very easily to be specific in what the users wants. This lady continued to be quite fresh and rude so I said “excuse me, but I do not appreciate how... “ but she cut me off before I got to finish my sentence huffingly saying “well now I have to go remake this. Thank you.” Before hanging up. I had tried to finish my sentence while she was saying that... which was that I did not appreciate how rude she was being nor did I appreciate being accused for something that is not my fault nor to my knowledge... but sadly I never got to finish my sentence as she hung up. Never have I ever been treated so disrespectfully or rudely by a restaurant employee (who appeared to be the cook) regarding an order. At this point I don’t care whether the food is good or not. The lack of communication, interpersonal and customer service skills this employee had was beyond intolerable, disrespectful and rude. It was down right inappropriate. So here I am, writing this review. I am so disappointed as I usually love going to and eating at this restaurant. And in a time where restaurants somewhat survive on take out/delivery orders due to the pandemic, one would think they would work on their...
Read moreI have dined at this restaurant twice within the past month. Both times, a Friday night and a Saturday night, I have found the wait staff to be exceedingly rude and rather curt with the customers. On both nights, the restaurant seemed busy. I noticed there were only two servers for the entire restaurant. The two young servers were primarily dealing with customers, new customers coming into the restaurant and the seated customers, as well as fielding phone orders. They certainly seemed significantly overwhelmed. Unfortunately, their inundation translated into absolutely poor customer interaction.
I heard one of the diners at the table closest to me nicely ask one of the servers about the status of one of the dishes they had ordered. The other people at that table had already been served their food and this one person was sitting there puzzled. This particular diner politely asked her again after she seemingly ignored his first inquiry. I nauseatingly heard her say, "It's not going to come out quicker if you keep on asking." There was an instantaneous pause in that table's collective conversation, as they all looked on with bewilderment and indignation. Surprisingly, the "scolded" diner maintained his cool and never responded with any rancor. I was expecting him to say something to the effect of, "Excuse me!" But he was seemingly calm and patiently waited for her to bring out his dish.
At no time whatsoever did I notice any apologetic sentiment from this server for such an appalling and unjustifiable comment. Instead, she steadfastly maintained a look of defiance and vexation. Her repulsive conduct actually caused that table to prematurely ask for the bill, despite them not finishing their respective dishes. She unquestionably ruined their dining experience at this restaurant, and, more than likely, their entire evening. Upon leaving, I looked at one of them with outright empathy and subtle sorrow.
It is not completely fair to lump this server's conduct with the other's comportment. But, she was the least bit affable or cheery herself.
As a direct result of the deplorable and fortuitous behavior by these servers, my family and friends will unquestionably be dining at a new Thai restaurant, despite the fact that we all reside within a few miles of Siam Basil Thai Restaurant. I just read a captivating quotation today, "Rudeness is a means to attract attention, assert power, cover-up ineptitude, deflect personal insecurities and intimidate meeker people." To the owner/owners, this should assuredly be something to think about when...
Read moreFirst this is a vegetarian (no fish sauce) review, second there are two star ratings for this restaurant from me.
National rating: 4 Local rating: 5
We ordered the tom yum soup vegetarian with vegetables, green curry with tofu, red curry with vegetables.
Initially we ordered the soup with it's standard spice rating of medium. The soup had a distinct aftertaste which was unpleasant and it lacked any kick despite being medium. We were ready to leave this restaurant after testing it out with such a basic soup. I also felt the soup had way too much lemongrass making it too tart.
However as a group we took the decision to try the curries and boy were we happy that we stayed back. We ordered the main course, the green and red curries, as spicy instead of medium.
Initially, what came out the kitchen disappointed us as each of the curries looked as though they had too much coconut milk and we dropped your expectations assuming that we were going to be very unhappy with our meal here. Further, the curries were topped with sprinkled red chili powder instead of being cooked in them to raise the heat level while infusing their flavor into the curries and the vegetables.
But as soon as we tried the two curries we laid our fears to rest is this meal was extremely satisfying. Both, the red curry and green curry were very flavorful at the right level of kick and the tofu that they use is very different from what I've typically experienced. It was a steamed variety and had a very different consistency and texture to it. It was actually a better experience in which the tofu felt as though it was a part of the curry.
The iced tea is very mediocre and is too sugary; yeah ironically even for Thai iced tea standards.
In my opinion, if you're in the Sea Girt area, you should be fully satisfied with this restaurant. I would avoid the soups and jump to the entrees directly.
The other downside of this restaurant are their servers. Some of them interact with you as though they're doing you a favor. It was a bit of a turn off and they seemed to actually be a barricade to helping you decide and choose what you want to eat at...
