After finding a limited selection of food available at the Walnut Creek Centennial birthday party across the street at Shadelands, we stopped into this plaza and strolled over to Toyo Sushi. I've taken food to-go before, but it was my first time dining here. My husband and I sat ourselves at a table near the back. There are probably only 10-15 tables in the place - it's not super big.
We looked over menus for sushi and checked out the specials. I ended up ordering the spicy Concord roll, miso soup, and a green salad. After asking about the "crunchies" in it's description, my husband ordered the Walnut Creek roll with extra unagi sauce.
My soup and salad came first. The soup was awesome but the salad was soaked in dressing. It was way too much so I picked around a few bites of lettuce and ignored the rest. My brief disappointment was soon forgotten when our huge rolls were set on the table.
Casey's "crunchies" (little bits of puffed/fried rice?) covered his roll and were sooo good! I kept scraping up pieces off his plate with my chop sticks (and then eventually with my fingers). He was able to finish his roll - and I ate most of mine. The spicy scallop on top of the spicy tuna was outstanding. I love ordering new types of rolls when I eat sushi, but I'll likely order this one again next time we come. And there will definitely be a next time!
Sushi was fresh. Service was sweet and fast. Price was right!...
Read moreI have been coming here many times for a great sushi menu. We always ate sushi only. While they have the traditional sushi rolls, they also have many “crunchy” rolls with tempura crumbs, tempura shrimp or soft shel crab. They have “deep fried” rolls that are dipped in tempura batter and quickly dipped in hot oil. Very delicious! But today i decided to try other dishes from the menu, like the tempura plate, Chicken Karaage, soft shell blue crab and nigiri sushi. The crab was crunchy and tasted fresh, not sure about the dipping sauce it came with. The tuna and salmon nigiri was good, fresh. The tempura was also good, with the shrimp being the best. Some of the veggies were too big and too raw/hard in the center. But the chicken karaage was the big disappointment. The look and color was not appealing at all, it almost looked liked it was just sprinkled with starch. It was not crispy, it was rubbery, and not tender enough. So my recommendation is, stick to sushi at this place. It excellent for that. Service is...
Read moreWent here for the first time. Prices are pretty good for Japanese food. We ordered the Tonkatsu, gyoza, spicy tuna roll and tempura udon. The tempura udon and gyoza are fine enough. The Tonkatsu was also good but the katsu sauce we overly salty.
Service was slow but we got our food in a timely manner. Entrees came first and appetizers and tea came last. So that wasn’t great.
Now the part as to why I’m here. I got sick from the food, and likely culprit was the spicy tuna roll. It was overly big and tasted strange. I got stomach cramps at the restaurant and had to use the bathroom there. Fast forward to a few hours later and have diarrhea.
I don’t think I’ll come back. But pretty disappointed since the reviews were pretty high. If it wasn’t for the diarrhea, I’d say the food was average, and the spicy tuna roll (which should be an easy staple) didn’t e...
