Pros: • Homey atmosphere and wonderfully warm in the wintertime • Large portion sizes but affordable • Diverse menu • Decent food • Piping hot and fresh; serving bowl insulates well • No staff interaction (can also be a con if I needed assistance, but I am introverted). • Cute wild bird lives inside to beg for rice • Lively and polite staff
Cons (having ordered lamb curry): • Heavily underseasoned food • Uneven cuts of meat— Some small pieces of lamb, and some the size of small oranges, leading to inconsistent tenderness and occasionally very tough meat that needs to be torn with effort. • My portion consisted of a platter of rice, legumes, and shredded herb paired with a small cup of watery curry (most of the volume taken up by two particularly large and tough hocks of lamb) for meager coverage • A wait-time exceeding 40 minutes for the first of 3 dishes ordered by my group • Bad chai
Summary and tips: Bland and uninspired lamb curry that made up for its complete lack of aromatics and as-advertised ginger with pepper. The meal portions are hidden behind uneven cuts of tough meat and more rice than could be coated. Their chai is little more than thin, bitter milk, which they accompany with a tablespoon-sized paper-cup of sugar for forgiveness. It was not BAD food, but it had no love. My peers agreed, having ordered many other dishes.
Coming from Northern KY / OH, I highly recommend trying JOT INDIAN RESTAURANT for a beginner's introduction to Indian cuisine. The staff is exemplary and have given my family and I fantastic advice for branching out and trying new dishes. They are polite, remember our names and our conversations, and have a knack for great recommendations. If JOT is a 10, Indigo is a 3. Diverse and potent flavours, clever portion sizes, and attention to texture. Their chai is excellent.
Indigo drove me to write my first ever review out of sheer surprise. JOT's praises will take me days...
Read moreDO NOT EAT HERE DONT EVEN TRY THEY WILL DISCRIMINATE PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE REVIEW. “MONKEY FACE” I wish I could leave a review without any stars. Let me tell you guys what happened to me and my best friend today. August 22, 2023. We had been so excited to try this new restaurant in DC we had been seeing all the Instagram posts. The food looked good when we got there a Hispanic male tried taking our order when we told him our order he looked at us like we were stupid yet his face is the one that was stupid. He looked like we had told him some thing out of this world. When I asked him to explain to us what he was asking us about the order we had just placed he kept looking at us like we were stupid so I asked him “what is wrong why do you have such a disrespectful face” and then my best friend asked him the same thing. And other young lady approached the cashier, and I asked her if I could speak to her in Spanish, and she said yes, so I asked her “what is wrong with him why does he look so mad and looking at us like we’re stupid his face is very disrespectful” We started walking out of the restaurant, we were not happy with the customer service and other gentleman approached us and asked us to calm down. The owner approached us and asked to leave the premises. We told him we were leaving, and he proceeded with telling us “YEA LEAVE LEAVE YOU MONKEY FACE” he repeated this multiple times calling my best friend a “MONKEY FACE. I don’t need to mention my best friends race. He continue to call him “MONKEY FACE” and telling us to leave his restaurant and that we weren’t welcome. I tried to explain to him he needed to talk to his employee to have a better attitude with the customers. Yet he continued to be rude and kept calling my best friend a “MONKEY FACE” The same incident has happened several times and just because people keep leaving good reviews doesn’t mean they have changed. I...
Read moreWhile there were some positive aspects, the overall experience was marred by a few disappointments.
Upon entering, I experienced a lengthy wait for service. After what felt like an eternity, a man from the bar kindly took my order when the woman attending to me was occupied elsewhere. The delayed service was a bit frustrating and contributed to a less-than-ideal start to my dining experience.
The restaurant's interior was uncomfortably cold, and I would caution against visiting during chilly weather. Despite the less-than-warm atmosphere, I tried to focus on the positives of the menu.
The samosa was a standout, featuring a crisp exterior and flavorful filling. The accompanying sauce, however, stole the show, elevating the dish with its rich and complementary flavors.
The Masala tea was a highlight, served piping hot, providing a comforting contrast to the cold surroundings. However, it required an unusual amount of sugar to achieve a balanced flavor, something unexpected for someone who typically enjoys tea without added sweetness.
Regrettably, the butter chicken failed to meet expectations. Priced on the higher side, the dish lacked complexity, relying heavily on sweetness as its dominant flavor. The saving grace was the small side of chickpeas, which stood out with its robust and satisfying flavors.
On the flip side, the potato parantha and cheese version were underwhelming. The samosa sauce became a necessity to salvage their taste, highlighting a lack of individual appeal.
In conclusion, my overall experience was disappointing, and I do not plan on returning. However, I am open to reconsidering if friends express an interest in revisiting, with hopes of exploring other items on the menu that might offer a more satisfying...
