This is just another one of those diners around Washington that was just ok for me when I visited and I will tell you why....First off as soon as I sat down and was presented a menu the server immediately asked if I was ready to order. Now, I don't know if it is normal for these places to be giving the customers the bums rush, but it does seem a bit off-putting. Second, the food was decent. I ordered the blueberry pancakes along with a side of bacon. The bacon was a tad too salty for my taste, and the pancakes were not great, but not bad either. They tasted like they came from a box with just a few blueberries sprinkled on top. Third....what is up with having a cat walking around the restaurant while people are eating? It's definitely an issue there. Fourth, I got the check right after I took approximately three bites of my food. Like, really? What is the rush to push customers, especially new customers, out the door? Fifth, the restaurant itself, including the bathroom, needs a serious upgrade. Now, the menu itself isn't too bad, and a majority of the items are very inexpensive, with the exception of a cup of coffee. The waitstaff, in spite of being a bit pushy, was friendly. They do offer indoor and outdoor dining currently. As a person who eats out quite often and absolutely loves diner food, this place was a miss for me on many levels. Would I come here again the next time I visit Washington?...
Read moreI was in the area for a meeting. DC traffic is frequently unpredictable. So, I was looking for a greasy spoon close to my meetings. Arrive early... eat breakfast, get some coffee, and kill some time. Google Maps helped me identify this place as meeting my needs.
Self seated right away. This is a basic no frills establishment. Food is basic, nothing fancy, which includes things like butter salt pepper and other condiments. While all are available, they are self-service.
Service is upon request. You want something. Get the attention and request assistance from the wait staff. Not overly friendly or inviting... but on mission and task.
The atmosphere gives the local working class vibe. Regulars include cops, construction workers, etc. Staff know these customers by name or their regular order. There is a bond between regulars and staff, including the slaving over the grill. Nothing fancy... get in and get out.
5 stars for meeting my needs and expectations. (Not a google rating category) if the 3.0 rating is below your ideal. Know that this place seems to shoot for average... it appears to be their goal. They are incredible at being average, and the price is right, especially for their location.
I will be back. This place serves my personal logistic needs for my meeting travel needs...
Read moreWe recently visited Pete's Diner in Washington, DC, and unfortunately, our experience left much to be desired. Despite its prime location near the Capitol Building and the charm of being a quaint little diner, the food and service fell well below expectations.
To start, the food was disappointing. The eggs were served cold, which is never acceptable, and the rest of the meal lacked flavor and freshness. Adding to the frustration, the service was incredibly slow and incomplete. We had to repeatedly ask for parts of our order that were forgotten, which made the meal feel more like a hassle than a pleasant dining experience.
On a positive note, the diner's location is excellent for tourists and visitors to DC. It’s conveniently close to the Capitol, and its cozy atmosphere has a certain appeal. However, the quality of the food and service overshadowed any charm the diner had to offer.
Overall, we won’t be returning to Pete’s Diner, and that decision isn’t just because we’re from out of town. Consistency and attention to detail are key in the food industry, and sadly, Pete’s Diner missed the mark in both areas. If you’re considering a visit, the location might be a draw, but don’t...
