Engine Coffee — Restaurant in West Chicago Township

Nice location and atmosphere is very nice with friendly staff. However, I felt like baristas were not very considerate about the possibility that customer coming in can be very enthusiastic about coffee. I asked them what beans they have for pour over and response I got was not so informative (just said “ethiopia”). As a daily coffee drinker/enthusiast, I want to hear more about it such as its origin, roast level, cup note so that I can really enjoy the cup that I am drinking. For tasting note, it was very plain, underextracted thus tasted like water with no complexity with paper after taste (person pouring was not paying attention to the flow rate, thus it will definitely mess up the agitation inside the dripper. Coffee is tasty, selection is good. Some complaints from me (but maybe it’s your thing): room temperature runs cold and it’s drafty by the windows, service is not hostile but also not warm, and the EDM bouncing out of the speakers overhead is too many beats per minute.

Tables are full of folks on their laptops and tablets, often with headphones on. Are they keeping the place in business?

I want this place to stay as it’s great to have a locally owned coffee shop in the neighborhood. Sadly, it doesn’t have a friendly feel that encourages me to frequently return. One of the better coffee shops in chicago but waited over 20 mins for my croissant to be warmed up and when I went up to ask bc I wasn’t called at all about it, they told me it was ready… that was a little frustrating but apart from that the coffee was made pretty well and fast. Almond croissant was to die for tho so i guess it was wroth the wait?

Edit: The barista was so nice and made my coffee again with less milk bc I like my espresso strong. The bay leaf latte wasn’t sweet and tasted like a herby vanilla latte, probs wouldn’t get it again but it was nice trying it out!
