So this is a restaurant that I've been trying to get a reservation at for years at this point. Every time I go to make one, the remaining time slots are just not convenient for me, so until now, all I could do was walk past Mi Tocaya a hundred times. Finally, I made it with my wife and I must say, it does not disappoint.
So you may be wondering then, why only 4 stars out of 5? Well, two reasons for that. The first is the service was not that great. We walked in and the hostess sat us at our table. After that, no one paid any attention to us for the next 15 minutes. No one asked us about drinks and we were not even given any water. After they finally decided they wanted to give us water, they disappeared for yet another 15 minutes before giving us any attention so that we could order our food. Then the second reason was the guacomole. Besides being really expensive for a tiny portion, the flavor did not impress at all and I was worried that this was going to set the tone for the rest of the dinner.
Luckily for us, it did not! After we were able to finally order our food, things took a turn for the better. We order the steak burrito and the chicken taco. Yes it is only a single taco, but trust me when I say it is enough. The tortilla is about 6 inches and loaded with chicken, a fresh and delicious fennel salad, and charred pineapple. The flavor was exquisite! And although I would normally call the chicken a bit dry (especially for chicken thighs), it did not even matter. Everything combined just made the dish a tasteful medley of flavors in the mouth and any indication of dryness was quashed with the flavor sauces and juices of everything else.
The steak burrito was also absolutely delicious. The steak itself was extremely tasty and stayed juicy while having a phenomenal sear on the outside. The burrito was fresh thanks to the help of lettuce and sour cream and very filling thanks to the beans and steak. It was rounded off with some grilled onions and peppers and both of the sauces that they gave us (one was a roasted red salsa and the other seemed to be some sort of spicy habenero sauce) were absolutely delicious.
We did not have any room for dessert unfortunately as the tres leches cake coming off the pass looked phenomenal. They say the get it elsewhere anyway, so we'll have to stop at Kristoffer's bakery in Pilsen to try it out.
Overall, a wonderful experience. Hope Mi Tocaya Antojería can step up their service game a bit and I will happily...
Read moreI stopped by Mi Tocaya Antojería with my wife after seeing it listed on many must-eat lists online. We were excited since we had wanted to eat here for a while, and we thankfully left satisfied!
We arrived and were seated outside per our request, and had waters brought to the table immediately, and soon after, got our drink order taken by our great server. I went with the margarita, and my wife with a michelada. The margarita was refreshing and tasted on the money to a traditional margarita, andy wife enjoyed her michelada, though, wished it had more lime to her tastes. For appetizers, we ordered chips and salsa and the aguachile. Both dishes perked me up with the spice, which I thoroughly enjoyed given my love of spicy food and Mexican heritage, though, the my wife tapped out with the aguachile as it was too spicy for her. I gladly cleaned up the plate on her behalf. We were offered refills on chips, once we took, the second time we politely denied, but were happy to be offered more as the chips themselves were fresh and authentic; both of these descriptors being applicable for the entire meal.
As for main plates, I ordered the queso fundido and birria (or the DIY Quesobirria), and my wife had the steak burrito. We expected smaller portions, but were pleased to have gotten more than expected. The steak burrito was delicious, with the steak standing out as tender and well cooked. The standout to me, however, was the Quesobirria. Given traditional birria is made of goat, a game-y flavor is expected, despite this, the dish turned out to be much more flavorful and melt-in-your-mouth good. Granted, a substantial amount of cheese did ooze in between the pieces of meat, but this enhanced the flavor rather than mask the flavor of the meat itself. The side of consome was a nice, authentic addition that reminded me of a Sunday morning eating with family as I dipped my tacos into it.
Overall, we left full and content by the experience. I was satisfied with the authentic flavors and homemade quality of the food, though, it did come at a price. I would recommend the place to anyone in the area as it is one of the best places to eat in Logan Square. The spice might not be for everyone, but if you are a fan, definitely...
Read moreI would say our experience was disappointing at best. My boyfriend and I live across the street and had been looking forward to trying this restaurant out since it opened. We made reservations for 8:30 pm last night. We arrived maybe 3 minutes early and were seated right away. Our waitress explained the menu for us and took our drink orders. Fifteen minutes later, still no drinks, but our waitress finally came back to let us know the drinks would be coming up soon and then took our orders. We got our chips and salsa rather quickly, but still no drinks. We finished our chips by the time our drinks finally came out 20 minutes later. Our waitress got us a fresh batch of chips and we almost finished that basket when our 4 tacos came around. While they were all good, the chicken was the best. We finished our tacos and drinks and no sign of our waitress or our queso fundito we ordered. The tables around us that were seated and ordered after us were all receiving their orders instantly. We continued to wait and grow irritated. Finally at 9:25 the manager came by to apologize for the wait and say that the food would be out soon. We expressed our disappointment and frustration and told him to just cancel the order because we were tired of waiting, as we had been there for an hour and were still waiting on all our food. While the manager was getting our tab, our waitress came to drop of the queso fundito to which we declined it and said the manager was getting our tab, but I will note that the queso fundito brought to us looked extremely burnt on top of everything. The manager comped our drinks and chips and salsa. We paid for our tacos and went home. This was one of the most disappointing experiences we have ever had dining anywhere. The highlight of our night was getting ice cream from Walgreens after. It's sad to say, but we will never be returning to this...
