I’ve dined at Nomonomo 7-8x now and have previously enjoyed my experience here. However the last instance I’ve dined here was not up to the standard that I’ve previously had. I attempted to address this issue internally and sent an email to offer feedback but had no response from the restaurant after a week.
Overall my boyfriend and I were surprised at the service we were given, given the quality of service we have received over the last 7-8 times we’ve dined here. On the night we dined, we called at 8:30 pm inquiring whether Nomonomo could accommodate us at 9 pm, at which an employee assured us that we wouldn’t have an issue being seated. When we arrived we were confused when the host seemed hesitant to seat us, as he glanced down at his watch twice and stated that they were winding down. He assured us that they were happy to accommodate us as long as we respected their closing time. We were confused as we had 90 minutes before closing but assured that we understood.
We were served by a female waitress, whom was very kind and attentive which we greatly appreciated; however we were also served by another male waiter who served us in a very rushed manner. We ordered 2 omakase courses that night, which we’ve previously ordered before and have had pleasant experiences. In some instances during our course that night we observed the male waiter frequently lingering around or near our table and peering at our food, which sent an urgent undertone to our dining experience. In addition to that, there were also times when he brought our new dishes and took away our old plates away at the same time, without placing our new dishes in front of us or explaining the items that we were being served. Thirdly there were a number of instances where my dish was placed down in a hurried manner, resulting in a bang from the force of the plate being placed on the table. And lastly, I completely understand needing to tidy a restaurant before closing, but besides the cleaning beginning 45 minutes before closing time, it also was done non-discreetly, which added to the rushed experience.
Overall, I have usually received excellent and friendly services in my prior dining experiences and usually highly recommend Nomonomo to my friends and coworkers to dine at. The waiters who’ve served us are usually very knowledgeable and kind to explain in detail the courses we are eating - which have made our dining experiences pleasant. I understand that we came towards the end of a dinner service but with 90 minutes before closing time and us having left 15 minutes before the restaurant closed, I feel that it is unnecessary to rush diners in the way that my partner and I experienced, especially during an omakase course. For the amount that we regularly spend to dine here, the service we received that night was objectively unacceptable and unfortunately I don’t see ourselves returning to dine in soon. I hope this feedback helps servicing future customers so others do not have a...
Read moreDisappointed. Won’t come again. Not recommended. Change your manager! The whole restaurant is working probably because of that one Japanese chef who only works on Friday and Saturday, and we came on Sunday for omakase without knowing that. Rice is dry and hard. Sauce is way too salty that I can’t taste the fish. I had bad things in our plates and the manager, Juan, is trying to play it off. The manager gave us attitude and probably thought we’re fools.
‼️The manager wasn’t even saying thank you or goodbye to us even he stood at the front desk and watched us leaving. So yea, I had to give 1 star or even 0 star if I can.
Review: Miso soup 3/10: Way too salty, can‘t drink at all. SMOKED KAMPACHI SASHIMI 7/10: special smoked flavor, not bad KINMEDAI 5/10: feels like the fish and the rice are separate, rice is a bit too hard BLUEFIN CHU TORO 6/10: Rice is definitely way too hard. The fish is good, but still doesn’t come together with rice. KAMASU 6.5/10 HIRAME 6/10: the flavor of perilla leaves (ooba) is way too strong that I can’t taste the fish neither the sauce on top SHIMA AJI 7/10: nice fish. but the flavor of soy sauce is too strong, too salty. Rice almost crushed when I tried to pick it up. BLUEFIN AKAMI 6.5/10: I felt like I was eating a saucy burger. The sauce is sweet and salty, very similar to Peking duck’s sauce to me. But again, the flavor of sauce is too strong that I can’t taste the fish and foie gras. MADAI 6.5/10: average taste. The fish itself is a bit dry FAORE ISLAND SALMON BELLY 5/10: nice burning taste of salmon. but I think there’s a small piece of fish scale in my sushi (see picture) HAMACHI 6.5/10: average. the fish taste a little unfresh since it has a little fishy taste IKA 4/10: so dryyyy, and the rice crushed once I grabbed it ANAGO 6.5/10: I don’t understand why give me anago but pair it with unagi sauce? Why don’t you just give me unagi? And the sauce is again way too salty and strong BLUE FIN O TORO 3/10⚠️: it used to be a 7 since I’m personally a fan of o toro. But there’s a fascia or something like that I really can’t chew and had to spit out. I never had this in o toro before in any other restaurant. VERY DISAPPOINTED. UNI & IKURA 0️⃣/10⚠️: We’ve expecting this the most besides the o toro, but it’s the most disappointed piece. The ikura is bitter and definitely not so fresh. But what’s irritating is we told the manager and hope he can fix the problem. But he, shockingly, told us that it was not the ikura but the sauce, and neither the manager and the chef knows what they put in there and tried to fool us. How can the sauce be bitter since there’s only soy sauce in it? You think I’m a fool or what? NOT ACCEPTABLE AT ALL. NEGITORO TEMAKI 7/10: meaty TAMAGO...
Read moreMy fiancé and I have been searching for a “go to” sushi spot and we finally found it! From the ambience to the service to the food no other sushi place rivals Nomo.
Here are all the reason we love this place:
Ambiance: Nomo is sleek and modern yet cozy all at the same time. Once I walk in it feels like I am about to eat some high quality sushi! The bar is also beautiful and we can’t wait for summer when they open their front windows and we get that outside but inside best of both worlds experience (which you know as Chicagoans we need to soak up all the nice weather once it rolls our way!)
Service: seriously stellar!! To sum it up in two words friendly and knowledgeable. The staff makes it feel like a neighborhood sushi spot and if you have any questions about the menu they know their sh!*#t. If you get the chance to be waited on by Makayla or Kayla consider yourself lucky, honestly they are one of the many reasons we keep going back!
Food + Drink: and for the crown jule of any restaurant their sushi is INCREDIBLE! The best quality I’ve have in Chicago and we are so lucky to have this place right in our neighborhood. Their prices are fantastic for such high quality sushi. You can ball out or just have a few rolls and not break the bank. My fiancé and I are guilty of over doing it for sure. We have tried all the nigiri which is freaking amazing, the tuna topped foie gras is unique and 100% worth it. Now let’s talk booze, cocktails are delicious and the sake is a must with dinner (try the mushroom sake it is funky and pares well with surf and turf roll).
To top all this off they have a freaking HAPPY HOUR!! Like what!? And it’s a good happy hour from 5-7pm. Great chance to try the fish collar.
Really hope you get a chance to...
