SALT of the Hearth — Restaurant in West Des Moines

Went here recently with a group of friends just for a drink or two, a couple of friends ate there before we met them. As soon as we sat down they told us their server had been super weird and rude the whole time. She was very unattentive to them and later to us. We finally ordered drinks and it was clear our server did not want to be there. Rushing us with our drink orders, complaining about being there all day. I thought maybe they were closing and we were being rude coming in around 9:30, checked their hours and it was Saturday, said they didn’t close until midnight! The worst part was her coming back and literally snatching menus from us we were trying to hand her, clearing the table which would have been helpful had she not asked us to hand her things by saying “can you hand me that so I can get it out of the f*ing way” I couldn’t believe she swore at us even if she meant to be sarcastic. Was just super rude to us the whole night and we felt rushed out even though they weren’t closing for another few hours. Sad, the decor is stunning, that was the best part about it. Awful, Awful Awful! Our waitress was new and tried really hard and was polite. BUT, she was given no training (as in zero). She couldn't even open a bottle of wine. Which, as a sister company of Wine Styles, should be a mandatory training point. Now, the food. The name of the restaurant is spot on for two of the dishes we ate. The Monkfish and Scallops meals were both too SALTy to eat. And on top of that, we waited over an hour for it to come out after we ordered. So long so that people from other tables came over to talk us worried we were never getting our food. Which brings up the atmosphere. Everyone in the place was seated in one small area because the rest was unfinished. We enjoyed the camaraderie we felt though with all the other guests who were visibly upset with their experience as well. Management needs to take action before another restaurant fails in...

This is one of my favorite restaurants. They have a huge selection of beers, a beautiful patio, good cocktails, and great menu items. I’ve vegan and they have some delicious vegan offerings, as well as things to please the meat eaters in my family. The appetizers are incredible! I love the portobello fries. I’ve had Brussels sprouts from hundreds of restaurants but theirs are definitely in my top five. The service is usually great, I think sometimes there could be confusion about their seat yourself policy, especially if you go when they aren’t busy and you might not be noticed immediately, but once my server has greeted me I’ve never had a bad experience. One of the managers in particular always goes out of his way to check in and make sure we are enjoying our meal....
