The Irish — Restaurant in West Des Moines

The Irish was subpar when we checked it out. It smelled like sewer when we walked in. The bar tender suggested a terrible cigar that was loosely rolled and low quality. I ordered the The Ginger and it was way too sweet for me. I took responsibility for not asking the right questions, but the bar tender seemed highly offended at the fact that I was looking for something not sweet. When I told him exactly what I was looking for, he told me he couldn't help me and walked away. I was shocked. I've given that description many times and never had the same experience. He clearly just didn't care enough about his job to make suggestions. The saving grace was a bus guy named Kyle. He overheard the conversation and suggested a drink, which I immediately accepted. We had tables and couches reserved for 30 people for an after wedding reception party that we booked a few months in advance. The manager, Kori, even offered to bring in Pizza from Coaches Pizza next door for us. I thought, how nice. They knew we were to arrive at midnight, but when we got there, there were no tables reserved, no pizza, the servers and bartenders had no idea we were coming. We had all of this confirmed the week prior. I reached out to Kori as she gave me her personal number. I texted her the issues, but never heard back. So on the surface it looks like a great place. Beautiful inside! Friendly staff. My complaint is having to walk thru the smoking patio to get inside the place. The walk thru is fine, not ideal but whatever. Once you're inside you would think that would be the end of the smoke. But nope! I think i second hand smoked 2 packs of cigs just sitting in the non smoking section. Really poor ventilation. Not even sure why they have a door separating the 2 sections when it all just ends up in the main area. My friends had fun but had to cut my night short bc of all the SMOKE! I'm a former smoker but I've never just sat and wallowed...
