Lucky 13 has the best burgers, but I’m upset to leave this review. On 2/9/24, we accompanied family for a birthday at Lucky's Iron Door. I had my 7 year old son with me, we normally don’t go to restaurants as he has severe food allergies (43 food allergies / anaphylactic to all top 8 allergens). This was a special occasion, so we thought we’d enjoy time with family.
Anytime we’re out, we bring our son’s food with us as he can only eat home cooked meals from specific brands that are safe for him. He can’t eat food from ANY restaurant due to cross contamination and severity of his allergies. We get seated and wipe down everything really well as usual, I take out tupperware and our son starts eating his food. Waiter greets us and is friendly. He notices the food and says they can’t allow outside food (I’ll add that the waiter was very respectful the whole time. Great guy). I told him about my son’s food allergies and that he can’t eat any food from restaurants, as we normally do and restaurants accommodate, we were still going to order food, just not for my son. Still, the waiter says they can’t let outside food inside, it’s against policy but also against health code violations. I told him I could show him his medical bag and Epipen so they can know that it’s for medical reasons, and still wouldn’t make an exception.
We left it alone and told him we’ll go somewhere else. Went outside, but I felt really unsettled about how it went. I was curious and went back in and spoke to the waiter again. This time I asked him about the health code he mentioned because we’ve NEVER had a problem anywhere like this. We’ve also never heard of a code like this as he mentioned. He said that he didn’t know the specific code but there are issues of cross contamination, and that they can’t verify what’s in outside food. Also, that it’s a business so they’re trying to sell food and that us bringing in food doesn’t make sense. I told him I understood the reasoning, but that me bringing in outside food isn’t cross contamination because we’re not entering the kitchen and mixing it with other food, or feeding it to anyone else. If I had the choice I’d want our son to eat a burger and fries from there (because Lucky's is the best) but can’t because of his allergies. A lot of back and forth, still a respectful conversation. Still couldn’t tell me what health code we’d be violating, but I know that this is something that was false and made up. I get that it’s a business but there should be accommodations made for medical reasons. I then asked for the owner’s phone number which the waiter gave me and left. I’ve called multiple times and left respectful messages to the owner so we can have a conversation, but he won’t answer or respond at all.
Per the American Disabilities Act (federal regulation), public spaces including restaurants, are required to make accommodations for medical purposes. Food allergies are considered a disability under the ADA. Looking through other google reviews, I see that this is not the first time this has happened at Lucky's for people with dietary restrictions. If parents have to feed a newborn formula or other baby food will Lucky’s not allow it? If parents bring their child that can only feed through a tube is that not allowed either? This can get technical in a lot of ways. I understand a business makes their own policies, but this is federal regulation. If I were bringing in McDonald’s that would be a different story.
I’m still up for having a respectful conversation and want to avoid this getting bigger and not involving the food allergy and other communities. Would love to see Lucky’s make this right, learn more about disabilities, and accommodate so others don’t have to experience this. I’m not looking for a freebie. I’d gladly pay for a meal there while having my son with me. Again, Lucky’s has the best burgers in town and staff (especially the waiter I spoke with). I’m leaving this poor review due to negligence/unwillingness to accommodate for medical reasons, and not making any efforts to make...
Read moreI had such I hopes for Lucky’s Iron Door Roadhouse, but was disappointed. The first thing I noticed was there was one hostess and one server, and we went at lunch time. The server and hostess were both hurriedly helping all. We had a group of 8. The server was very nice and friendly. She let us split the check into two, 3 on one check and 5 on the other. We started with the smoked jalapeño popper appetizer, they were a special, we ordered two as they had five jalapeños per order. We were not asked about dipping sauce or anything at that point when we received our bill they charged us $.50 for each popper order for a small, small cup of ranch dressing. BTW they were very good poppers, if I ever came here again I would definitely order them again. When we ordered our burgers, the order came out incorrect. We tried to figure it out amongst ourselves at the table. We finally settled on, I would eat one of the burgers that was not what I ordered, but I could eat it, so that the other person who ordered their burger specialized could have it the way they wanted it. I explained to the server that I did not like the blue cheese dressing that came with our salad that it was too strong and asked if I could I get a ranch dressing and yes, you guessed it… another .50 cent charge for a small, small cup of ranch dressing. We asked for pickles on our burgers she explained that the pickles came whole to keep their crunchiness and my sister said she wanted extra extra pickles so each of us on our separate checks had a charge of $1.00 for pickles! And we were each given a whole dill pickle, so if you wanted pickles on your burger, you had to slice them yourself and put them on, totally annoying. The menu did say that any change to the side dish would create an additional charge, so we were aware of that for changes to side dishes. But with being charged for every ranch dressing and every pickle we ate, it became a nuisance. My niece asked for a cup of mayonnaise for her burger and she was charged $.75. This is not a joke. Another downside, if you want to order your burger in a lettuce wrap/protein style, it won’t happen. As the server explained to my brother, they do not have any leaf type lettuce, they only have the Baby Spring Salad mix that they use for their salads. So those who ordered their burger, protein style just had extra salad greens on their plate with their burger on top of it. Big game changer for those who love a burger in a great lettuce wrap. Four people in our party ordered water and four people ordered sodas and then we had burgers and salads basically, and in between the two checks it was over $200.00 Kind of pricey for lunch. Also gratuity was add on to our check automatically, this was not a surprise as there was eight of us in our party. But when I looked at our receipt, it said there was 15 people in our party. And then after your total on the receipt that you sign it asked for additional gratuity. My niece did not notice the gratuity had been added onto her check which was the larger portion of the group and so she had added gratuity herself until we pointed out there was already 18% gratuity on each of the checks. Not a very good practice on the restaurants part, imo. Anytime I’ve had gratuity added automatically, it’s already been disclosed by the server. I will not be recommending Lucky’s...
Read moreI would give this place 0 stars if possible. My husband and I are not from the area, but were meeting my son and daughter-in-law for dinner who do live in the area of this restaurant. My husband and I arrived and opened the door for what is the "bar side." I didn't have my physical ID on me, so we were not even allowed to enter (we are both in our 50s). We had an electronic copy of my ID on the phone because I had just updated my passport, but they would not accept this. We were told we could go to the restaurant side where we could still order food and alcohol, but could not enter this area.
When we went to the restaurant side, I told them I didn't have my ID on me, asked if we could still order alcohol with food and they seated us. It was basically empty with the exception of two tables, and we ordered an appetizer and my husband ordered a beer. I tried to order a drink and was told since I didn't have my ID, I couldn't. My husband asked if he could order it and was told as long as he had an ID (although nobody actually asked to see it). He ordered a drink for me and after nearly 30 minutes of waiting we got our onion rings and drinks. We started eating and within minutes the waitress brought a check to us, told us we needed to pay and leave immediately because I took a sip of a drink and did not have my ID. I told her I had volunteered that information at the door, and she hadn't even asked my husband for an ID either to which she replied, "If I didn't, then that's my fault." She took the drink and told us to leave immediately. About this time, my son and daughter-in-law arrived, and although it was freezing outside, they were not allowed in. Beside the service being ridiculously slow, I have never been treated so poorly in a place of business. I understand the need to ID to keep minors safe, but when the "children" that are meeting us are well-over the minimum age, a little common sense goes a long way.
Additionally, we had to pay for food and drink that we weren't allowed to have, then blamed by the owner for putting the liquor license in jeopardy. Either train your employees to not blame guests when your "policies" aren't followed, or continue not serving your AARP aged patrons and you will eventually not need the liquor license and be out of business completely :)
On a positive note, we went across the street to Famous Dave's Bar-b-que where a large sign on the door says "We ID those who look under 50." We were seated promptly, treated with great service and atmosphere, and had a...
