Applebee's Grill + Bar — Restaurant in Westfield

We stopped here for dinner on a Friday night in early July while visiting friends in the area. We didn't know that Westfield was a college town, or that most of the students hang out at this Applebee's on a Friday night, so it was noisy for a while. The restaurant was full, so we had a 20 minute wait for seating. Probably not unusual on a Friday night here. Once we were seated, our server came over, took our beverage orders, and then returned shortly after to take our food orders. We ordered light: a crispy chicken sandwich with fries and a clubhouse sandwich with waffle fries. Our food was served roughly 15 minutes later. After having less than stellar experiences at some other Applebee's locations, we didn't set our expectations very high here, so we were very pleasantly surprised (maybe "shocked" is a better term) by the quality of the food and service here. The food was delicious and portion sizes were on the generous side. Our server, Sophie, was friendly, efficient, very engaging, and a real delight, and she made our visit very enjoyable. The total bill for our two meals with beverages was just under $35 plus tax. I'd say that's probably a fair price for our visit here. I went in there twice in the last month with my wife to the bar. The first time the lady was just miserable but the food was good so I can ignore poor service. The second time the bartender was “too cool” for us apparently because it took her 5 minutes to acknowledge us sitting right in front of her because her even COOLER friends were there. Once I finally ordered a beer it took 10 mins to get it then we got barked at if we’re eating then menus thrown at us? I’ve worked in similar environments and 1 stars are usually exaggerated, this isn’t that situation. She legit threw menus at us. After that didn’t speak to us for ANOTHER 10 minutes. We looked for the manager and when we figured out who she was, she was stuffing her face with five guys right in front of the bar ignoring everything going on. You guys are a legit joke! I’m not for people being fired because it’s a tough world right now but yeah it’s time for some firings. I’ll never step foot in any Applebees ever again just because of this. Children suckered me into a Monday night "expensive" dinner out after perfect errand behavior. Place was unusually busy and way under waitressed. Our server was apologetic but still remained attentive and friendly, she got a good tip from us. Ultimately I was truly impressed with the care taken by the staff regarding my food allergies. I often avoid eating out due to my unusual restrictions, especially at a place known for delicious concoctions of many ingredients! Our waitress alerted kitchen staff to my couple concerns, prompting a visit from the head chef?kitchen manager? She made me a custom meal from the simple ingredients I pointed out on menu, safely cooked in a separate pan. Good old rice, chicken, and veggies, salted, peppered, sauteed in some sort of soy oil. Absolutely delicious, real food (not that the other foods on menu aren't good) and I even got to take half home to enjoy the next day. It was really nice to eat in a restaurant without breaking out in three days of hives afterwards. I have found this sort of personal attention in the restaurant industry...
