Incompetent dealing with food allergies. Let me start by saying that my wife and I have frequented various Los Amigos Don Juan locations in southeast Michigan for over a decade. It is not an exaggeration to say that we've eaten at these franchise locations more than 50 times. In general, we've always enjoyed the food, drinks, and atmosphere, so I really don't like leaving a negative review.
However, during our second time eating at this Westland location (we recently moved to nearby Livonia), we had a very bad experience regarding our 3 year old son's food allergies. Our son is allergic to eggs, and as usual, we clearly explained this to our server while ordering him a grilled cheese (we thought he'd had the grilled cheese before without a problem). We explicitly asked the server to double check with the kitchen to make sure there were no eggs in any part of the dish and that cross contamination would be avoided. The server repeated the allergy to us and assured us that he would notify the kitchen.
The server didn't return until after we received our food. The grilled cheese comes with fries, and they had also put a cup with ranch dressing along with the ketchup for the fries (ranch contains eggs). A little disconcerting, and clearly a slipup by the staff, but we're good about watching out for that kind of thing.
So our son eats his whole sandwich minus the crust (kids...) and about that time the server comes back around and says, "so he's ok with the grilled cheese and the bread?" My wife and I look at each other and reply "well why wouldn't he be, didn't you have them check for eggs?!" The server, acting as if we should have somehow known what their food contains, proceeds to tell us that "all bread is made with eggs" (demonstrably false), but that they don't have a list of the ingredients to reference for this particular bread. At this point we got a manager involved, who confirmed that the bread contains eggs. The server twice stated that he "did his job" by putting the generic word "allergy" on the food ticket that was sent to the kitchen (he showed this to us and there was no mention of what the allergy was to).
In the end, although they discounted our bill, neither the server or the manager apologized for the incident or took any bit of responsibility. The bottom line is that food allergies should be taken very seriously, and even if it's not something that they've had to deal with in their personal life, restaurant staff should be trained to clearly communicate allergy information between customers and...
Read moreI have visited this establishment plenty of times before because it is very local to my neighborhood. However I am very disappointed in the way that the owner of this establishment has treated family members and myself. When wanting to celebrate my birthday at this establishment with 15 of my close family and friends when my aunt had called ahead to let them know that we will be coming and what time, they said and I quote we don't save seats for anybody and then proceeded to hang up on my aunt. My sister then called today to try and see if they could get a better answer two are now dilemma, the gentleman was very rude and told her that if we brought 15 people and they would be refusing a service because they had a party ahead of us, now I remind you the same person hung up on my aunt and now is telling my sister that he was going to refuse a service! So I then had called myself to inform this owner that I really enjoyed their establishment but I was very disappointed at the way that he treated my family members, and that I would be contacting a lawyer since he decided to take it upon himself to say that he would be worth using 15 people service at his establishment. The moment that I said lawsuit this gentleman immediately changed his entire attitude! All of the sudden accommodations would have been made for us, he was not meaning to be rude, I misunderstood him. I understood this gentleman just fine he was telling me that 15 people were not going to be served and his establishment due to another party which I was informed previously that they do not accept reservations, if this is stablish meant did not take reservations how on Earth would they know that's another party was coming to attend at the same time that my party was going to be arriving. Again I am very disappointed in this situation it's my birthday and I just wanted to celebrate with good food and good times with the people that I care about and I was refused to even come with my family to celebrate. So now we will be celebrating my...
Read moreThe food was excellent. The service was better! Embarrassing as it is to admit, this was our first time dining here in years. We stopped in years ago, and hadn't been back since. Turns out, that was a mistake!
Our server, Celeste, was amazing! Attentive, efficient, and most importantly, she had an opinion!
I asked her for opinions on drinks and meals, and she confidently presented me with her preference when I asked her a "given these choices, what would you get?" type question. So many times, the wait staff haven't even dined at the place they are working at...
My wife and I ordered house margaritas, monster size, and they were indeed monstrous! Often when dining out, drinks are "weak", but tonight they were full-bodied, meaning they were proportionately mixed. We got tasty margaritas instead of glasses of blended ice and lime and peach.
It turned out that Celeste was also our bartender! The only way we found that out was after we complimented how tasty or margaritas were. Celeste said meekly, "Thank you, I made them."
The food! Yes, that. Exemplary! On her recommendation, I ordered the California Burrito, with chicken. The choice was between beef and chicken, and I asked Celeste what she would prefer with the most flavor, and she said "Definitely, the chicken!" She was right.
My wife had the Enchiladas Supremas, with a side of guacamole and green-sauce. O.M.G! I was fortunate that she shared a couple of bites with me! So tasty!
Los Amigos was running on a skeleton crew, but the service and food were amazing, given today's labor challenges. Dinner took a little longer to come out, but we never felt ignored or neglected, and the food came out hot & fresh.
We'll be back again, and we'll be sure to ask...
